The Mod Cabin Writer

Beard balm or beard oil? This may be the most frequent question we get asked at The Mod Cabin. Some people say they are one and the same. This simply is not true. Beard balm is a pomade made by mixing, heating and cooling moisturizers and sealants. Beard oil is a leave in moisturizer and conditioner made by mixing carrier oils with essential oil blends or in some cases fragrance oils. In this post we will explain the differences between beard balm and beard oil and when to use each. We will start with beard balm.

Beard balm is a styling and shaping aid as well as a leave in beard conditioner. A good beard balm should moisturize your facial hair, provide hold for styling and make your beard look thicker. For best results, avoid beard balms using synthetic sealants like petroleum jelly as they may irritate your skin and damage facial hair. Find a beard balm that contains all natural sealants like shea butter, beeswax or lanolin. These ingredients are natural, help your beard look thicker and are less likely to irritate your skin.

If you have a patchy or thin beard, consider using a beard balm with shea butter, as shea is especially good at making facial hair appear thicker. In addition to all natural sealants, make sure your beard balm contains all natural moisturizers like jojoba or argan oil. Without the moisturizers, the sealants will just seal in dryness, making your beard brittle and prone to breakage. A quality beard balm containing all natural moisturizers and sealants will moisturize, condition and provide hold for shaping and styling as well as make your beard look thicker. If you are looking for an all-in-one leave in beard conditioner and styling aid that is easy to use, all natural beard balm is for you.

Beard oil is an easy to use moisturizer and leave in conditioner that comes in a bottle or pump. Quality beard oils will moisturize the skin underneath your beard, soften your facial hair, reduce itching and create the conditions for healthy beard growth. For best results, use a beard oil with a jojoba or argan base. Jojoba and argan are the best facial hair moisturizers and both have a long shelf life.

In addition to being a great moisturizer, beard oil can act as a beard deodorizer and cologne. Look for a beard oil scented with an essential oil blend, not with fragrance oils. Essential oils are distilled from nature whereas fragrance oils are synthetic and can potentially damage your beard. If you are looking for an easy, simple and quick way to moisturize and condition your facial hair, reduce the itching of early growth and create the conditions for healthy beard growth, all natural beard oil is for you.

Beard balm is a great all-in-one beard moisturizer, conditioner and styling aid that is especially helpful for people who want their beards to look thicker. For best results, wash your beard with an all-natural beard soap and apply beard balm when dry. Scrape out a dime sized amount of balm and rub between your palms. Run your fingers through your facial hair, starting from the neck and working up, making sure to rub balm into the skin where your beard grows.

This will help  nourish facial hair at the roots. Reverse and run your fingers through your beard in a downward motion from top to bottom, spreading the balm down the hair follicles. Don’t forget your moustache and the hair around your mouth. Brush the balm through your beard with a boars hair beard brush to distribute the balm evenly through your beard. Use the boars hair brush to straighten your beard, or scrunch facial hair in fists to accentuate curl. Use up to three times a day as needed. All natural beard balms containing shea butter and beeswax can be left in until you wash your beard. Beard balms containing petroleum jelly should be rinsed out nightly to avoid damage to facial hair.

Beard oil is an easy to use beard moisturizer and conditioner that will moisturize the skin underneath your beard, soften facial hair and help create the conditions for healthy beard growth. Beard oil is especially helpful during the first six weeks of beard growth when itching can be a problem. If you have a naturally thick, long beard, you may find beard oil easier to work with than beard balm.

Beard oil can be used in conjunction with beard balm or as a stand alone product. For best results wash your beard with an all natural beard soap and apply beard oil when dry. Splash a dime size amount of beard oil in your palm and massage into your skin and beard. Brush the oil through your beard with a boars hair beard brush to help distribute the oil evenly throughout your facial hair. Use up to three times a day as needed. Like all natural beard balm, beard oil does not need to be rinsed out.

Brushing The Beard

Another great thing that can help with beard itch is brushing the beard.

Brushing the beard will train the hair to grow in a single direction and reduce the chances of itchiness.

However, there are some things that you need to be aware of before you just start brushing your beard.

Your facial hair is much tougher than the hair on your heard, so you are going to have to brush it differently.

Any regular brush is going to get the job done; you are probably going to have to invest in a beard brush.

The best time to brush the beard is after you washed it, but not directly after you washed it. Make sure that beard is dry before brushing.

Routine Trimming

Men that are accustomed to a beard will not exhibit itchy skin, as someone that is new to this style. One way to prevent beard itch is routine trimming.

If this is the first time for having a beard, you may find it difficult to keep it properly trimmed. If you do not want to look like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, you will need to invest in a high-quality beard trimmer.

These products are very inexpensive, so you will have no issues finding one that is suitable for your needs and wallet. You should begin this process with a thorough beard cleaning, just to remove excess oil, dead skin, and lose hairs.

You will need to adjust the trimmer blades, according to the desired length. Most traditional trimmers come with a 0.50mm and/or 1mm blade.

The newer models are equipped with an adjustable blade for more convenience and preciseness. If you are looking for a close trim, you will need to pres elect the 0.50mm adjustment.

You should utilize a small comb to brush out the tangles and smooth the hair down as much as possible.

Starting at the right or left jawline, gently move the trimmer upwards in a single motion. Make sure to aim the trimmer toward the chin, just to keep everything neat and even.

Repeat this process until you reach a thorough and even cut all around the jaw line. Now, move over the opposite jawline and repeat the process until you have achieved the perfect length.

Always follow the contours of your chin and cheeks, when trimming the hair in these areas. Once you complete the entire process, be sure to check for stray hairs, because there will probably be a few stragglers here and there.

Repairing Your Beard

It is possible that you could have already grown a beard and it still itches. This happens because your beard hair is damaged.

The hair and skin could have been damaged from the harsh soap that you used to clean your face. Whatever the situation is your beard hair is damaged and you are going to need to repair it.

Once your beard gets damaged, it will spread from the tip to the root.

This damage can greatly slow down the growth of your beard hair and once the follicle emerges it can cause irritation.

You can purchase repairing products that can heal this damaged hair. When the repairing product is repaired to the hair it will absorb the proteins contained in the product and provided moisture to the damaged stands of hair.

Beard Growth Serum

Most often, beard itch only occurs during the early growth phase. Once the beard hair reaches a certain length, the itch will dissipate, but this is not always the case.

A great way to eliminate itchy skin quickly is by enhancing the growing process. You will find several different brand beard growth serums on the market that contain a variety of vitamins, minerals, and herbs.

These ingredients work together to speed up the growth process, so you will achieve a fuller and thicker beard in no time at all.

Change Your Diet

Whether or not you know it, your diet plays a vital role in the overall health of your hair and beard. If you do not eat healthy, your hair will not be healthy and it could become very itchy.

A healthy beard will not be an itchy beard. Therefore, it is absolutely pertinent to do away with the fast food and make the transition to a much healthier diet as soon as possible.

First and foremost, you’ll want to add a small quantity of Biotin to your daily diet. Biotin is a supplement, which is known to be very helpful for natural hair growth. It contains Vitamins C, E, and BAll of which are great for your hair.

It is also essential to begin consuming a sufficient amount of Omega-fatty acids. These chemicals are vital for proper hair growth and they’re also capable of protecting cell membranes.

By consuming an appropriate quantity of Omega-3, you’ll be able to avoid developing dry and brittle hair, which can be very itchy.

And, you should also refrain from drinking excessive amounts of alcohol and smoking cigarettes.

Cosrx Oil-Free Ultra-Moisturizing Lotion

In order to avoid extra greasiness, this lotion is a great solution because it doesn’t contain greasy oils. And even though the name says ‘ultra moisturizing’, it contains the right amount of moisture for oily skin.

This lotion features balm-like milky formula with a very nice citrus scent. The formula dissolves quickly like a gel and leaves a moist and fresh feeling. It’s not greasy or overwhelming. The main ingredient is birch sap that has powerful skin conditioning properties and leaves it smooth and satin-like. It also contains panthenol and hyaluronic acid to provide hydration and moisture. You only need a few pumps to cover the whole face, so this lotion will last for a while.

The company replaced water with a better birch juice to pack their oil free lotion with even more skin benefits while keeping the formula simple and lightweight. The hydration effect and the fresh scent combined with a nice feeling make this product perfect for oily skin, even during the summer time.

MIZON Snail Recovery Gel Cream

This cream promotes skin regeneration and leaves it moisturized and hydrated. It contains Copper Tripeptide-which increases collagen and elastin production. It is proven to be more effective than Vitamin C and retinoic acid. It is also a great anti-inflammatory ingredient.

Some report they experienced acne outbreak that disappeared in a week.

MIZON Vita Lemon Calming Cream

The cream has a gel-like texture and you only need a little drop to cover the whole face. It has vitamins and a carbonic acid that rejuvenates, revitalizes, and stabilizes your oily skin. Initially, when the cream is applied it will make the skin feel dewy but when it absorbs into your skin, it will mattify and hydrate. It energizes the skin and the scent is very nice. It smells like lemons but the scent isn’t irritating and doesn’t linger for longer than a minute.

Always Apply A Moisturizer

Contrary to a popular opinion, even super oily skin needs hydration and moisturizing. Not giving your skin moisture will encourage it to produce even more oil. Hence, these moisturizers for oily skin are non-comedogenic, oil-free, and suitable for oily skin.

You should also note that alcohol dries the skin, but not in a healthy way. Check the ingredients list to see whether a product has alcohol in it because if it does, your skin might break out and your skin problems will get worse.

Less Is Better

Oily skin usually looks the best when minimal beauty products are applied. Always opt for concealer because it contains less greasy oils than most foundations. If you feel like using a foundation, choose an oil-free product or mineral foundation as it fills your pores and makes skin look more balanced.

It also reduces risks of developing acne or skin issues. Refrain from slopping a heavy amount of foundation on your problem zones, such as acne – they make skin look uneven.

Prime Your Skin

Always prime your skin before you apply makeup. Choose a primer for oily skin. Never use an old primer because they get shinier and stickier with time. A good primer is a solid base for your makeup. It does a great job in absorbing excess oils. This will help in making makeup last longer. The skin’s oil makes makeup streaky and looks weird if you don’t use a primer. Always apply a good primer after you have prepared your skin with a suitable moisturizer.

Wear Sunscreen

Many people with oily skin skip sunscreen because they think it will make their skin look greasy.  As a result, they get brown spots and pigmentation. Therefore, choose a gel-based sunscreen that will mattify the skin and offer good sun protection.

Try to stay away from salty foods during summer; drink water to stay hydrated and eat green, leafy veggies. All these changes will balance the oil production in your skin.

Use Translucent Powder

After you apply your foundation or concealer, wait for minutes until it settles. After that, you can set it with a translucent powder. Avoid powders with shimmer because they will make your skin look shiny. Always start with your T-zone because it is often the oiliest.

Beard Shampoo vs. Regular Shampoo

Why should you choose shampoos for beards in the first place? You probably think that your regular shampoo and conditioner will work the same. Well, that’s where you’re wrong! While these two types of shampoo both clean your hair and leave a nice smell, they play different roles.

For starters, shampoos for beards are specialized for facial hair. Just take a look at the ingredients on both beard and regular shampoos. The regular shampoo contains sulfates, which wash away liquids and removes oil from your hair and skin. This is okay for the hair on your head, but you do NOT want that with your beard, as it will make it dry and unmanageable. Plus, regular shampoo will weaken beard hair roots and cause it to have split ends.

Shampoos for beards come with ingredients that work with your hair’s natural oils. They include cocoa butter, jojoba oil, olive oil, shea butter, and even coconut oil to keep your beard soft and smooth. Beard shampoos keeps your beard smelling pleasant as well.

How to Select Shampoo for My Beard

Another question many guys with beards ask is how often they should shampoo. Some people say you should shampoo your beard every day, but that’s not the case.

Those with short beards don’t need to worry, as they can use regular shampoo (though beware of the itchiness). For those who want to grow their beard and maintain a longer beard, it’s best to avoid shampooing daily. That’s why I recommend that you shampoo your beard two to three times a week.

This way, your natural oils stay intact, which keeps your beard healthier. As long as you maintain your beard properly with other beard care products (like brushes and conditioner), your beard will look and feel better, without the itchiness.

If you happen to have dandruff, you can use a medicated shampoo or beard shampoos that focus on reducing the accumulation of dandruff in that area. Deep conditioning your beard with conditioner and applying beard oil right after washing it helps. If push comes to shove and the dandruff is still noticeable, then it’s best to shave it off and regrow it again.

Itchy Beard

Beards either become itchy because of shaving or from the accumulation of dust and dirt from the outside world. To reduce the itchiness, you will need to use conditioner with your shampoo and moisturizer right after. Regular trimmings and brushing will help your beard grow in a single direction and reduce tangling and scratching.

Beard Growth and Thickening

The length of your beard may depend on genetics and external factors, so it may not grow as easily as other men’s beards. To help encourage thickness and growth, avoid shaving your beard and continue to wash and condition it as usual, this time using products specializing in beard growth. It’s also helpful to take biotin supplements and establish a healthier eating and workout regime, taking in a lot of fruits and vegetables. Be patient. It will take time, so continue caring for your beard and it will begin to grow.

Our rating

Known as one of the best shampoos for beards, it’s made from Kunzea Oil, Leatherwood Honey, and Beeswax to reduce beard itch. Plus, you can use it for your hair and body as well, making it well worth the price. I recommend it for its all-natural ingredients You can be assured that your beard is only getting the best because with Professor Fuzzworthy’s, and it certainly shows through the way your beard will shine.

How to grow a beard

Before growing beard, you first need to decide what beard style to keep. Different styles of beards suit different faces and a proper decision on the beard style has to consider face cut, profession, time at hand and more. While beard can grow on its own accord, grooming and maintaining it needs a lot of time and care.

You have to be really patient because as the beard grows, itches and irritations also grow along with that. Properly groom it while growing it too, to avoid situations like that.

This decision is not only dependant on the face cut but also on the kind of facial hair you have. Carefully consider both your face and the facial growth to decide what kind and type of beard you want to keep. Also mind reading a buying guide to get the best beard trimmer for you.

Be patient

Wash your beard regularly with a good shampoo. Then regularly use oil or beard moisturiser (depending on your skin type) to keep it in good condition. This is the time which will need the your maximum patience and discipline. And if not done properly, you will have to deal with a lot of beard itching and irritations.

Next comes the precision area, i.e. your moustaches. Comb them down properly, remove the guide or use the shortest setting on the trimmer. The clipping here has to be very nicely done and anything below lip level has to be cleaned properly. Some of the modern day trimmers also come with an attachment at the back for such precision trimming.

Men grow beards, always have, always will. Some appear to do it with effortless ease, while for others it may be more of a struggle. Some men are blessed with super beard growing genes, while others struggle with patchy beards or other beard growing issues.

However, regardless of your ability to grow a beard, if you’ve decided it’s time to attempt your first, here are the five steps you should follow to give it the best chance possible of reaching its full potential.

Just let it grow

One of the biggest mistakes beginners make when growing a beard for the first time is to try and cut and shape it too early. The best thing you can do is just let it grow naturally; don’t cut, shape or style it until you got some length and can see how your beard develops. Set a commitment period of time, say six weeks for example, and let nothing stand in your way to achieving that goal. You are going to experience beard itch as the whiskers that you’ve been shaving into a sharp edge curl and grow back towards your face. As they hit the face you’ll experience a certain level of discomfort, and this is the time when most men crack and shave their beards. This period will only last from a few days to a week at most, so get yourself mentally ready for this time and just get through it.

They break down their beard oils into three sections

White line  — which is the most basic of the beard oils and are designed for the more ‘mass’ appeal, don’t get me wrong, still really high quality oils just they’ve cut down the costs (on packaging, complex oils etc.) and passed them on. Lumber Yard. Urban Garden. Blank Slate.

Silver line  — this is a step up, using more unique packaging (squared rather than rounded) but also a more sophisticated base of oils. Tree Ranger. Spiced Citrus. Tea Tree.

Gold line  — these are the premium oils, that use somewhat rare essential oils (and you will sometimes see these go out of stock a fair bit) — but the scent is absolutely stellar. Truly something for your beard to savour. Four Vices. Temple Smoke. Old Money. All pretty darn heavenly.

One of the very original beard companies around (although still relatively young), the Bearded Bastard have secured their spot in my eyes as one of — if not — the best around. Based down in Texas, they hand produce a range of beard goods down their with cruelty free and all natural ingredients.

You will be able to tell it’s a TBBINC product by the unique ‘ real wood’ labels they use to coat their products, that gives it an awesome finish and just reeks manliness. It makes pretty much every single product unique in their range, one won’t look exactly like the next. If you haven’t heard of them before, they are my no.recommended place to check out.

Woodsman (a great starter oil for any start, and is my one of choice).

Morocco (which obviously ties in heavily to the argan aspect).

Simply vanilla (a rather beautiful set soothing scent).

No.Detroit Grooming

Detroit grooming are based in ( you guessed it ) Detroit and have built up a pretty darn decent name for themselves for literally delivering the goods with their beard grooming products, now although I can’t speak for the rest of their beard stuff ( butters, shampoos etc. ) what I can say is their beard oil is pretty top notch stuff.

No.Texas Beard Care

Texas Beard Co. don’t really need an introduction as they are pretty highly regarded already amongst many a beardsman.

I’ve gotta be honest.

I’m not totally sure what Blackbird is or what they exactly do, they describe themselves as “ multi disciplinary design studio ”.

All I know is they make pretty darn decent beard oils. They’ve got three that they call: the past, present and future ( quite artsy, I know) —  all with varying scents. My better half got me all three for a birthday and I was more than suitably impressed.

The bottles looking pretty suave sitting in the bathroom cabinet too.

No.Beard Supply

They also have an I.P.A. ( a beer beard beard oil, pretty much can’t go wrong with that — unfortunately 0%) which I’d be keen to try out as well. In all, the oils look really neat — the packaging is sort of vintage esque. A proper dedicated beard store that’s certainly worth the visit.

No.The Mod Cabin

The Mod Cabin are well known amongst barbers in particular for producing some really stellar quality grooming products.

And they are everything a good beard company should be: they really stand out by producing ‘entirely’ natural products by hand — all the ingredients they use are cruelty free — and delivered to your front door, super fast.

They’ve got a great range of beard oils on offer but perhaps their two most renowned products are actually the backwoods beard balm and the birch tar soap.

No.Zeus Beard Care

Named after the beard of Zeus? Must be pretty darn good.

Credit to these guys cause they have created a rather cool brand with some pretty unique scents — the most popular being the Natural Verbena Lime which goes down a treat (that’s made up with some pretty sophisticated ingredients that will do wonders for your beard).

They also produce a quality beard shampoo and conditioner too as well as particularly good boar bristle brush (using quality 2nd tier boar bristle hairs with pear wood).

No.Grave Before Shave

Grave Before Shave also operate under the name of fisticuffs is perhaps with Beardbrand one of the most famous beard companies on the list.

As you can see from the labelling what immediately sets them apart to pretty much all other companies out there is their pretty epic graphic labelling. Don’t let that fool you though.

It’s a top notch product underneath available at a pretty fair price too. Some of the particularly good scents: cigar blend, gentlemen’s blend and the bay rum. They also tend to throw in a bunch of freebies with your order as well, stickers and beer can coolers.

Although their moustache waxes are good ( as the name even suggests ), the stand out product amongst their range is for sure the wisdom beard oil.

It’s even featured as one of my overall best too.

Captain Fawcett  — although more well known for his array of quality mustache waxes has also produced a fine range of beard oils too.

His own blend is the private stock but he’s made two pretty unique collaboration beard oils too which are pretty awesome.

One with Ricki Hall known as the Booze n’ Baccy, which is a rather killer scent I’ve gotta say as well as The Million Dollar Beard Oil with Jimmy Niggles (that features actual gold flakes, what’s not to love?).

No. 1Dapper Beard Oil

I’ve got to admit, I don’t really know much about this company other than they make damn good beard oil and are based in Canada. I was given a bottle of their Golden Tusk as a present a while back and has stayed with me to this day (easily going down as one of my favorites). It has a really solid undertone to it — and a neat crisp spicy kick as well — a neat beard oil indeed.

No.2Honest Amish

Honest Amish have pretty much been round at the very beginning, they were a beard company before the whole ‘beard trend’ set off.

Although they are probably a little more famous for their beard waxes and balms, they do also make a pretty mean beard oil. They keep to the basics and they do them well, hand crafted in the USA — using just the good stuff (all natural and organic ingredients) — very appropriately priced as well.

For most men, skincare isn’t usually the first subject that comes to mind, but did you know physiologically men’s skin is 30-40% thicker than woman’s skin? Plus, it has more oil-producing glands, larger pores, and is more exposed to UV radiation and pollution resulting in more rapid skin aging over time.

Add shaving and bearding to the mix and it comes down to one simple fact:men’s skin requires care that’s specially formulated to its unique needs.

Kiehl’s founding family member, Mr. Aaron Morse, was not only a U.S. Air Corps pilot, he was among the first in the skincare industry to identify men’s specific needs. In the 1960’s, Mr. Morse introduced innovative products, including: “Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion”, and “White Eagle Shaving Cream” – to better serve men. Out of this tradition was born “Grooming Solutions Nourishing Beard Oil” – our latest addition to Kiehl’s heritage of listening to men and providing the finest skincare care solutions.

Powered Vs Corded

A battery powered trimmer can be used virtually anywhere, as long as the battery is charged. It would be a good idea to choose a trimmer that offers an indicator for the charge level. This way you will know when to charge the trimmer. The corded trimmer restricts your usage, as you will have to be close to a power outlet in order to use it.

Different Speeds and Lengths

It would be a good idea to buy a beard trimmer that offers several speeds on which it could be used. Similarly a product that can be used on beards of different lengths can make trimming a beard quite easy and efficient. Such a product is useful irrespective of the length of the beard and the styles you will want to try. You could use it to create a beard stubble as easily as you could to trim a long beard.

Beard Care

Immediately after the shower, while your pores are still open, is the best time to add some beard oil to your face and beard. Beard oil is a leave-in conditioner that will help keep your beard soft, shiny, and prevent against beard dandruff.

Beard Wash

Beard wash should have very gentle lather that is soft enough for your face and tough enough to handle curly, coarse beard hairs. We recommend using beard wash once or twice a week, but you can use it daily if your beard tends to get dirty regularly. Follow up with a matching Beard Softener for the ultimate cleaning experience.

Mustache Wax

Mustache wax is commonly made with natural ingredients which include, beeswax, jojoba oil, and lanolin. Mustache wax provides a medium hold and is perfect for a natural style that keeps the mustache out of the mouth. This wax will provide enough hold for a very natural shape with some pliability, and the hold will last all day.

Texture Paste

Texture paste is a styling product that is ideal for beard care. Texture Paste is a very lightweight, sculpting product that helps get those wild beard hairs under control without feeling like you have any product in your beard.

Texture paste is a medium hold, matte styling product. For a natural and classic look, apply while hair is damp. If you want more texture, apply product when hair is dry.

Beard scissors are not the regular kind of scissors, and it’s always important to ask specifically for beard scissors when shopping. Scissors should always be changed if damaged or after a few months of regular use. It’s always advisable to have scissors that meet current travel regulations.

Beard brush

As soon as your beard is clean, it requires being softened up. Beard conditioner will impart your beard with moisture and nutrients, refining your hair’s texture and making skin irritation less probable. Use conditioner two times every day for complete moisture.

For hydration to be present all through the day, a good conditioner may not be sufficient. Supplement your routine with a daily dose of beard oil, which can be applied after a conditioner or be used alone.

Despite a man’s best efforts, even the most impressive of beards can produce a little damage. If you notice any ingrown hairs, tweeze them out to prevent further irritation. For skin that’s at present reddened, a light coat of Cortisone should assist in reducing the symptoms, though be sure not to misuse it.

Consistent brushing will give a man’s beard a clean shape, smooth texture, and will also train hairs to grow in a distinct direction, reducing the risk of scratching and having additional ingrown hairs. Any small beard comb will do, although thick beards may merit a boar beard brush. You can read in detail here about Top Beard Grooming and Care Tips.
