boat cover Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy boat cover, right? No!

Nylon VS Polyester

Westland® is the fabric expert. All material used is carefully considered and cross-examined with over 100 years of combined experience. Wisdom has taught the design engineers and pattern craftsman at Westland® that polyester is a superior material for a boat cover. Polyester is highly resistant to UV radiation and maintains structural integrity in high temperatures. To aid in UV protection, all yarn is dyed before sewn, which also helps with fade protection. Make sure thread and straps are made with polyester, not nylon, which breaks down in the sun.

Sewn in VS Glued

Glue will break down and fray your cover with prolonged exposure to the sun. The underside of a boat cover is just as important to the top, so Westland® sews in additional reinforcements at wear points, such as trolling motors and windshields. Fuzzy backed reinforcement is used for areas around the windshield. Made of polyurethane, which prevents scratching.

Rope VS Stretch Cord

Westland® covers achieve their snug fit with a heavy duty ¼” draw rope. Inferior boat covers use a stretch cord which is known to lose elasticity and results in a cover that loosely fits around a boat. Westland pairs the unbreakable rope with a strap kit assembly which boasts strong webbing and tough plastic locking buckles to distribute the load evenly. Westland reliable strap kit system will make your boat cover trailer-ready. Most boat covers are not trailer-ready and will rip when your boat needs it most.

Stumble

A boat is an important and highly cherished investment. If you own a boat, then keeping it safe and good looking, must be high on your list of priorities. Asides from general maintenance, protecting the boat with a cover is equally of much importance. A boat cover keeps out rain, dust, grime, bird droppings, UV rays and other unwanted environmental impacts from your beloved boat. This top boat covers reviews is aimed at helping you make the best purchase decision.

Shrink Wrap

Technology has brought us another means of covering boats: shrink wrap. Boat builders initiated the use of this plastic material to protect new boats while they were being shipped via truck. Now many companies offer shrink wrapping services to the ordinary boat owner.

Shrink wrap requires special, expensive tools, which is why owners generally ask for help. Also,  a shrink wrap top is somewhat expensive. And, it is difficult or impossible to re-use a shrink wrap cover. You must buy a new one each season, and hope that the boat yard recycles the old plastic each spring.

On the good side, shrink wrap covers don’t flap. They virtually cannot cause chafe, scratches or wear to the fiberglass. They cover so well that decks emerge nearly as clean as they were the day the boat was covered. Learn all about Shrink Wrapping a Boat.

Waterproofing

If your boat frequents the outdoors all the time, a waterproof fabric should be at the top of your checklist.

If your product has a fabric that allows the water to permeate the boat then your prized possession may be jeopardized due to corrosion. Ask your retailer or seller whether the cover you’re choosing is waterproofed.

Seams

A boat cover that doesn’t sport well-done seams may give you a headache in the future. Seams are important as they determine whether or not your boat should come together with the cover. Akin to a waterproofed fabric, you must also ask the retailer if a cover is equipped with a good amount of seaming.

The Right Kind of Tightness

In boat covers, a fit that is customized should enable the cover to perform better in time. So, if you’re utilizing straps that are tied-down, or say snaps, in order to your cover on the boat, then it is not going to pan out quite well enough to resist the water.

A Cover That is Reinforced Underside

Also, choose either a white felt-like or plastic batting as this material won’t allow the dye to leach right on an aluminum windshield frame.

Dark or Light Colors

It’s always been suggested to go for the darker hues due to their ability to increase the UV resistance of a fabric. Meanwhile, dark colors are also known to withstand the wear and tear of its regular use.

If you must, go for blue, black, and green. The only drawback with darker colors is its propensity of absorbing more heat which then gets transmitted beneath it.

Harmful UV rays and high temperatures can bake a vehicle like your Mazda Miata’s paint job beyond recognition. The sun also cranks up the temperature in your interior and turns shiny new dashboards into cracked, warped chunks of vinyl. Cars that spend an abnormal amount of time out in the sun should stay under a UV-treated car cover made with acrylic fibers or high grade polyester fabrics. Miata covers, for example, help reflect harmful UV rays and keep interior temperatures low, making them essential for parking in deserts and other sunny environments.

Birds and Debris

That old oak tree next to your driveway may provide you with shade from the sun, but it doesn’t offer much else in the way of vehicle protection. From nesting birds to falling branches, parking your car underneath heavy foliage can cause major damage to your vehicle. Plus, the pollen, bird droppings and sap can harm your finish and give your exterior a spotty, unattractive look. If you park in the shade, make sure you keep your vehicle under an outdoor car cover.

Condensation

Unfortunately, even if you store your Mini Cooper indoors it is susceptible to water damage. Most garages lack proper air circulation, which makes them a breeding ground for condensation. Like rainwater, condensation can seep into the cracks of your dents and scratches and exacerbate preexisting exterior blemishes. Condensation can also fade your finish and take the life out of your vibrant paint job. To prevent condensation from wrecking your paint job, choose a Mini Cooper car cover, for example, that is made of breathable fabric so moisture can escape underneath the cover.

Garage Clutter

Helpful Tip: Car covers provide more than just weather and dent protection. They can also help prevent theft and discourage vandals from tinkering with your ride.

The number of potential hazards in a garage or storage unit is immeasurable. Every time a box knocks against your door or a ladder nudges your rear end, it leaves a mark. Plus, with kids running in and out of your garage all day, your vehicle’s bound to get hit with the occasional basketball or bike handlebar. If your garage is stacked to the brim, make sure your protect your finish from falling odds and ends with a heavy-duty indoor car cover.

Outdoor Car Covers

Just because your car is out of reach of mother nature’s temper tantrums, doesn’t mean it’s safe from dents and water damage. Even in the garage your vehicle is still vulnerable to scratches and condensation. Luckily, some of the auto world’s top brands offer covers designed specifically to address these issues. If your vehicle is parked in your garage, a good place to start is the Covercraft Dustop. This snug-fitting custom shield is constructed of a unique polypropylene/polyethylene blend that keeps dust and air particles away from your vehicle.

Custom Car Covers

From the side mirrors to the headlights, custom covers hug every curve of your vehicle like an expensive Italian suit, and give your car a stylish showroom look wherever you store it. Most custom covers are weather resistant and come with their own storage bag for easy transport. All of our covers are custom-fit for your exact make and model, so whether you’re looking for a car cover for your Mustang, or any other vehicle, we’ve got it.

Universal Car Covers

Universal car covers give you peace of mind without taking a big piece of your bank account. Because they aren’t fully custom-designed to your exact vehicle, universal covers are the affordable way to protect your vehicle from indoor and outdoor hazards. They come in a wide variety of sizes and styles to fit just about any vehicle.

Find a fabric that breathes

Regardless of where you store your vehicle, it’s important that it’s made of a breathable fabric. Unlike a cloth cover or plastic tarp, breathable fabrics like multi-layer polyester or satin allow moisture to escape from underneath the cover and prevent condensation from building up on your finish.

Weather Resistance

As you search for the best outdoor cover for your car, make sure you’re looking for covers made of weather-resistant materials. The only way to truly protect against rain and snow is to get a cover that’s built to last in those environments. For cars that have to withstand inclement weather, we suggest selecting a cover that utilizes a multi-layered design or one made from a blend of fabrics. Layered covers like the Covercraft Noah feature a rugged top to block UV rays and resist water, as well as a polypropylene middle layer to guard against dents and dings from hail and other impacts.

Mildew Resistance

Mildew and mold can wreak havoc on covers. The condensation lurking in your garage, as well as the rain and snow outside, can help breed these fungi and rot your cover. As you shop, make sure you’re looking at car covers made from mildew resistant materials. For a shield that works great in any environment, we suggest the Intro Tech Car Cover. The Intro Tech Intro-Guard is made of mildew resistant aluminized polyurethane acrylic and works great as both an indoor and outdoor car cover.

Corrosion is a killer.

Most of the metal on the boat is subject to the corrosive environment of sun and moisture. Add salt into the mix and it gets magnified. Look for excessive amounts of grey/white chalky corrosion (on aluminium) or streaks of red/brown on steel. An abundance of this may be a warning sign that the unit has seen salt water. A marina can run an engine serial number for you to see where it was initially sold. It may give you some clues too.

Wires tell no lies.

12.Water should stay outside the boat. All of these items can be trumped by the one “big one”, a boat that has been sunk! Look for oil stains in the upholstery, extensive corrosion on terminals in the engine compartment. This can be tricky to spot.

After you have inspected everything, you need to decide if any of the deficiencies you have uncovered are deal breakers, negotiating points, or ok to accept as is. You may want to seek the advice of an exert in the field (good marina with trained Service staff, a surveyor, or perhaps a boating friend who has years of experience). Used boats command a high value relative to new boats, so be picky and do not be satisfied with poor condition. You are paying good money and deserve to receive a quality product.

All of these risks can be DRAMATICALLY reduced by working with a great marina and boat dealer. They will have done these checks first, and should reject any suspect trades. Of they found issues, they should have remedied them and told you what epithet were and how they were fixed. Loom for marinas and dealers with a code of ethics or membership in organizations such as Boating Ontario Dealer, MRAA, NMMA Five Star Certification.

The above list is not exhaustive, and should serve as a guide to some of the common things to look for. It can be used whether you plan to do your boating on the Big Rideau Lake, Thousand Islands, Kingston, Ottawa, or any other body if water in the world. Ultimately used boats can provide good value through lower initial purchase price, and potentially reduced over-all depreciation. However, a few repairs and higher operating and maintenance costs can push the cost of ownership towards new boats if you are not careful.

Compact cruisers

This type of boat has been very popular for the past several years. Although their popularity is mainly due to their more reasonable price, compact cruisers are perfect for participating in water sport activities and making it a lifestyle at a lesser cost. This is the perfect boat for families who want to travel or spend the weekend on board while having the possibility to explore new water bodies. They are fairly easy to tow due to their reduced size and weight and can be furled at home without any problem, which can save you money. Their single engine motorization also reduces operating and maintenance costs.

As regards the cons, these crafts have reduced dimensions which is thus less convenient for larger families, and could soon feel cramped and crowded on board. As compact cruisers are much more sensitive to rough water bodies, some compromises may be required when travelling. Their reduced length and more significant height also make them more vulnerable to pitching and weight transfer at speed.

Who should choose a compact cruiser? Those who want to adopt water sport activities as a lifestyle, at a more affordable cost.

Express cruisers

Express cruisers can be described as larger fast cruising boats offering a high level of luxuries and comfort and a sportier style. They are perfect for long stays on board in a spacious environment, not to mention the various equipment and accessories designed to improve comfort. Due to their larger size, you will be able to accommodate several guests and enjoy short outings or small trips with many passengers. Their faster cruising speed also makes it easier to go to and return from remote locations.

Of course, this type of boat requires a higher budget, both at the time of purchase and when paying for operating costs.

Who should choose an express cruiser? Those seeking a boat for long overnight stays and who are not willing to make any compromise as regards space, luxuries and accessories.

Pontoons

Pontoons are spacious and are perfect for accommodating several passengers on board. These boats are perfectly suited to organize a party on board! Pontoons have evolved significantly over time. From over-simplified crafts, they have now become much faster and offer, in certain cases, a good level of luxury and comfort. They are also very popular due to their more affordable price and utility features. If ever you cruise on a small lake, you will undoubtedly see a pontoon. This is a well-thought craft for this type of use, enabling you to enjoy the view and the pleasure of simply being on the water.

Due to their peculiar configuration, pontoons remain the crafts that are best suited for smaller water bodies or for short outings. In addition, in most cases, these boats do not offer all the commodities for overnight trips. They are also less pleasant to cruise against the waves.

Who should choose a pontoon? Those who like navigating in all simplicity, while benefiting from a craft that can accommodate a higher number of passengers.

Watercrafts

Watercrafts are renowned for their excellent handling and drivability. Fairly affordable, they can be towed very easily, even with a car, and enable you to explore several water bodies. Their unique propulsion mode, a turbine, requires lower water levels than traditional crafts and you will be able to use them in locations that are inaccessible to larger boats. Their motorization can be extremely powerful in certain cases, enabling them to reach higher speeds, which adds to the pleasure. The maintenance costs of watercrafts are also very low as compared to other type of crafts.

As regards the cons, we must mention their relatively high operating costs, since their high speed capacity generates greater fuel consumption. The same goes for insurance costs. In addition, since space on board is very limited – one to three passengers, based on the model –, it is not possible to go on a trip with several people, unless you are cruising with other recreational boaters. You will often find yourself alone, which can be less interesting.

Who should choose a watercraft? Those who want an affordable craft that provides unequalled sensations and pleasures.

What to do when it’s yours

Insurance is the first essential to arrange when buying a boat. Beware of the temptation to buy a dinghy, hitch it up to the back of the car and immediately tow it home — if you have an accident en route damage to the boat won’t be covered. Equally, if it’s left in a dinghy park and it’s stolen before cover is arranged you also have a problem.

If you’re buying a yacht and paying a substantial deposit before completion of the purchase, it’s a good idea to have a policy in place at the time at which the deposit is paid. Once you’ve completed the purchase of your craft, it can be very tempting to replace existing deck systems and layouts with your own ideas. It’s often worthwhile resisting this temptation until you have a little experience of the class — it’s easy to get carried away on a wave of enthusiasm, before you’ve really learnt what will do the job most effectively. In the first instance it’s often best to just make sure the existing gear works effectively — chafed control lines, jammers that don’t operate properly, and any other clearly defective items should be replaced, and the same goes for low-grade systems with excess friction. If your new boat is your first experience of the particular class, then it’s worth checking the class association website for useful information The Lark class, for instance, has excellent sections covering getting an older boat up to its full sped potential, as well as a tuning guide that’s relevant to all owners.
