The ham radio frequencies you are permitted to use depend on which of the licenses above you have under your belt. Not all radios work with all frequencies, so make sure that you buy one which will offer you the frequencies you want to access.

Most handheld radios are limited to around five watts of power; you may find higher-powered options if you choose a base model. If you purchase a handheld, make sure it has high- and low-power settings you can manually adjust as per your needs.

For emergency communications, you will generally be using the two-meter ham band. The 440 MHz band is another that you will likely make plenty of use of. There are a couple of band-related features you may want to consider. One is dual band, which allows you to monitor two frequencies at the same time. Another is general coverage. This feature allows you not only to use ham radio bands, but also pick up AM, FM, and TV frequencies. Advanced features for bands include SSB and CW (Morse code).

Backlit Display

If you will be using your ham radio at nighttime or in dim environments, you may want to purchase a model that includes a backlit display. Remember, emergencies sometimes happen in the dead of night. Motorcycle CB Radio

As we said in Part I, CBs’ history in the market, installed base, and simplicity are the reasons they continue to sell as the preferred BTB communication option from manufacturers. If you have a touring model or a bagger from one of the major manufacturers, chances are it has been designed to accept a CB. You can either order it pre-installed on your new bike from the factory (in the case of BMW, Harley, Honda and Kawasaki) or have it added later as an accessory. Since this type of installation is unique for each bike and is of a proprietary design, you’ll pay more, but the existing bike controls and/or integrated AM/FM radio will likely work in an well-behaved manner with the CB. Since the CB unit is usually mounted deep in the bowels of the bike, and often requires the addition of electrical filters, headphone jacks and other such electrical system refinements, installation is usually best left to the pros at your local dealer.

If your ride was never designed to accept an OEM CB unit (as is the case with many cruisers) you’ll have to go with an aftermarket supplier. But don’t despair; these solutions perform just as well. J&M; Audio makes a nice CB unit that mounts on the left handlebar, allowing use of a push-to-talk trigger and other controls while riding—just like the OEM setups. All the electronics are housed in the handlebar-mounted control unit so there’s nothing to squirrel away in the caverns of your bike. Model JMCB-2003B-DU provides a 40-channel CB radio, NOAA weather band radio, rider/passenger intercom and stereo music amplification from any portable music device, all integrated into a compact unit.

Bluetooth

The industrious Swedes, who have given us dynamite, the adjustable spanner wrench and the PC mouse, have most recently given us Bluetooth. As we pointed out in Part I, Bluetooth was originally meant for short distance wire and cable replacement. Several vendors, such as J&M; Audio and Chatterbox, also build Bluetooth devices primarily for short range cable replacement. Bluetooth is also often integrated with other BTB communication technology to facilitate communication to devices like GPS units, digital audio players and phones. However, in this dedicated Bluetooth section, we’re talking about products that use Bluetooth technology primarily for longer range two-way radio communication in place of a GMRS/FRS or CB radio. Sena Technologies and Cardo Systems are just two of the manufacturers that have augmented the basic Bluetooth capabilities to allow for longer range BTB communications, and they also offer high quality products in this class. Both are helmet-mounted units, and both can link up with a multitude of other devices, such as your GPS for voice navigation, audio players for music, or a passenger’s unit for intercom capability. Both units claim 12–1hours of usage between charges and take 2–hours to fully recharge.

Car Charger

Desktop Charger: I sound picky, but having a well designed charger is quite essential. The very very cheap ones charge at low power continuously 24/The better ones know when to shut off the charging circuitry. The more advanced models allow your units to be on while charging.

CostHelper News

With reunions and other get-togethers scheduled during the holiday season, most people want to look their best at this time of year. For some, that means filling in those wrinkles with a bit of botox, or having a nip and tuck down here and there.

And the Best Bacon Is…

CB radio is that the transmission power on all CB’s is limited to watts by the FCC.  This means that all CB ‘s are manufactured to meet this requirement; therefore, choosing a CB isn’t about the power, but choosing a radio that fits your vehicle.

CB’s come in many shapes and sizes, and while any CB will work, off-road vehicles often have limited cab space and need a CB that is functional while out of the way. Durability is also a key consideration. While many CB radios have extra bells & whistles, off-roaders tend to want radios that are simple and can withstand hard use.

One of the most popular

CB radios for off road vehicles is the Uniden Pro 5XL. This small, simple radio is has basic CB functions and is very resilient to vibration and dust. If you are looking for a few more features, such as PA (public address) capability, choose the Uniden Pro 520 XL for a few more dollars. Another popular CB for off-road vehicles, specifically Jeeps, is the Cobra 7WX ST. This unique radio contains all the CB controls in the microphone and attaches to a small control box that is easily hidden. The Cobra 7receives NOAA weather stations, which is ideal for tracking weather conditions on multi-day trips.

CB Antennas

Because CB radios are restricted to watts of power, the CB antenna is the most important part of your CB setup. The quality and length of your CB antenna will be the primary factors in determining your CB’s range and performance.

CB antenna to your vehicle (see “tuning your CB antenna” below), while each antenna has a unique design. The Wilson Flex antenna was created specifically for off road users who drive in areas with low hanging branches, brush, and other obstacles. As its name implies, the Wilson Flex antenna is able to bend 180 degrees without breaking. While the Flex is a great antenna, The Firestik FS is the most proven CB antenna on the market. The FS is a thicker antenna than the Flex, and without a spring, the antenna does not have the same range of flexibility. However, where the antenna lacks in flexibility, it makes up in performance and transmission range.  The Firestik FS is made of quality components, and as a result, it gets consistently better range and signal than the Flex antenna.  If you are looking for the best of both worlds, we recommend choosing a Firestik FS antenna along with an antenna spring.

Installing a CB antenna onto an Off-Road vehicle

As I mentioned previously, off-road vehicles often present unique challenges when mounting a CB antenna. The central theme of most CB installation challenges is grounding. Having a solid ground is crucial, as the CB antenna uses the chassis of the vehicle to create a radio ground plane for sending and receiving CB signals. If your antenna mount is not properly grounded, your CB will have poor performance, and you run the risk of burning up components inside the radio. The two most problematic mounting areas on off-road vehicles are aftermarket bumpers and tailgates.

Mounting to a Tailgate

Many Jeep and Land Cruiser drivers choose to mount their CB antenna to the spare tire carrier, which is located on the tailgate of the vehicle. While this is a great place to mount the antenna, you will want to be sure that the mount and spare tire carrier are both properly grounded, along with the tailgate to the body of the vehicle. Often, the hinges of the tailgate do not have good metal-to-metal contact, and the CB is only grounding to the tailgate of the vehicle, rather than the chassis. This can be a tricky problem, as your CB will indicate that it is grounded, but the performance will be poor. To solve this problem, you want to be sure there is metal to metal contact between the body of the vehicle and tailgate, or install a ground wire from the tailgate to the body.

Compare with amateur radio.

The Citizen’s Band (CB) Radio Service, also known simply as CB, is a public, two-way personal radio service. There are several classifications of CB operation. The best-known form of CB is voice communications that became a fad in the 1970s. Mobile CB operation, especially in cars and trucks, remains popular. To a lesser extent, “CB’ers” engage in fixed operation from homes, and in portable communications using handheld transceivers.

Most CB operation takes place within a narrow band of frequencies near 2MHz. There are 40 channels in this band. These channels are overcrowded. Congestion is worst during peaks in the 11-year sunspot cycle when the 27-MHz band supports worldwide communication known as “skip.” Sunspot cycle peaks occurred in 1967-69, 1978-80, 1989-91, and 2000-200During the long intervals between these peaks, the normal range of operation on the 27-MHz band is rarely more than 20 miles.

Some CB operators illegally modify their equipment, or obtain illegally modified equipment, capable of higher transmitter output power and greater frequency coverage than is allowed by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulations. These operators use their equipment in an attempt to communicate over long distances, and/or to compete with other users of the service. This is called freebanding or bootlegging.

The CB Radio Service has proven useful in disaster situations, both small-scale (for example, for a stranded motorist) and large-scale (such as after a hurricane or during a flash flood). An organization of expert communicators known as the Radio Emergency Associated Communications Teams (REACT) provides communications support in emergency situations. Channel (at 27.06MHz) is monitored by members of REACT, and is recognized as the CB emergency channel in the United States.

It’s a famous say that, “The future depends on what you do today.” The popular CB radios once enjoyed, became the symbol of success for the means of communication. The user base was so huge during that times, but we can’t expect this technology to regain that popularity because latest technologies are hitting the market daily, This rapid innovation has totally changed the scenario for the CB radio future.
