Key Features

Dentists recommend that we should brush our teeth after every meal. Some of us do, but did you know that using the wrong toothpaste lack impact when it comes to whitening the teeth? Yes, consider using the right toothpaste that not only whitens the teeth but also prevents us from dental diseases and provides fresh breath. In this article, we will be looking at the best whitening toothpaste in the market. But before that, let us briefly look at things you need to consider when acquiring whitening toothpaste.

Recommendation: Have you ever known why some toothpaste brands are more popular than others? One of the reasons is because these brands have been recommended by the dentist. Being great experts when it comes to dental issues, dentists definitely know the right toothpaste that work perfect to keep our tooth shiny.

The cost: Some brands are more expensive as compared to others. Don’t think that the expensive toothpaste are always the best. Some manufacturers already know that most customers believe that the high-quality products go at a higher cost. Sometimes it is true, but be aware that some manufacturers producing low-quality products may set them at a high cost with the intention of deceiving you. Always stick to your budget. We have high-quality products that are affordable and which can satisfy your need fully.

Other benefits: Though you need whitening toothpaste, consider other benefits that the toothpaste comes with. Some toothpaste brands are great for tooth sensitivity and others are great in fighting germs that may cause teeth and gum diseases.

Having reviewed the best whitening toothpaste, we can conclude that most of these toothpaste brands have almost similar features. However, the level of satisfaction differs depending on the brand. Active Wow Teeth Whitening Charcoaland and All Natural Teeth Whitening Powder has worked out for a good number of people. This explains why it is one of the most preferred toothpaste by customers with the highest rating. Try it, it is probably the kind of toothpaste.

Fine Vine Charcoal Toothpaste

Fine Vine Organics is another US-based oral health brand that you may have seen on the shelves of your local drugs mart.

They advertise this more as a tooth whitening product, then anything else. I personally, found this to be better suited as a bad breath remover.

In all fairness, I would say that everything about this toothpaste is average. The taste is good, but not excellent. Too much charcoal aftertaste, in my opinion.

The natural ingredients are all there – Peppermint Oil, Baking Soda, Diatomaceous Earth, Charcoal, etc… But, they fail to create the desired foaming effect in your mouth as well as leave your gums and teeth feeling sensationally clean.

If you are a regular smoker, the flavor of this paste will likely not overpower the bad taste left after smoking a cigarette.

Do not get me wrong. This is still a very good product. This is why it has landed a spot on our list.

Some people with sensitive skin have experienced acne breakouts around their upper and lower lips. At Dental Dorks we cannot attest to this. But, there are several reviewers who have expressed such as concern.

Colgate Charcoal Toothpaste

How can the number one household brand in the toothpaste industry miss on the next trendy thing? Well, they cannot. This is why they have come up with their own charcoal active paste.

There is a good reason Colgate is on this list, but there is also a good reason we have placed it second last. I would not actively encourage you to go out and buy this paste. Not unless you have tried the other four products above and not liked any of them.

Do Charcoal Toothpastes Work

Sure, they do. Just make sure you know what you are trying to achieve. For example, not every charcoal activated paste will whiten your teeth, or leave your mouth with extremely fresh breath.

These products are no different than the majority of everyday toothpastes. Some will help you remove persistent stains, while others will help you protect your enamel and strengthen your gums.

Using charcoal to clean teeth is by no means a new and revolutionary concept. Back in ancient Rome people were using mostly charcoal powder to achieve brighter teeth.

Are Charcoal Toothpastes Safe

The ADA (American Dental Association) warns that overusing activated charcoal products will eventually wear down your tooth enamel.

So, before you decide to jump head first into an ocean of charcoal toothpastes, do some more research.

Using such a toothpaste will likely not have any negative results after a month or so. But, at Dental Dorks we do not recommend you substitute your regular toothpaste with a charcoal active one.

My thoughts

In the end all I would like to say is that I have provided you with the comparison to the top effective and most used activated Charcoal powders and toothpaste which not only base on my opinion but I also collected reviews from other people who used it, now the next action is yours to pick up the best which you think would suit you, whether you concern about gluten, money-back or sensitivity, we have done our best to make sure that you can select the best product for yourself easily. Have a Nice Day brushing yourselves.

Opalescence Whitening Toothpaste

Instead, this brand is named after the appearance of opals. In any case, this product does not taste like a shiny stone or an artifact. Rather, it has a cool mint taste that makes brushing teeth an enjoyable experience.

The original formula allows for an efficient and quick fluoride release. Even though this product is specifically designed to help whiten your teeth, it has the dentist recommended levels of fluoride. This makes Opalescence great for reducing gingivitis and protecting sensitive gums.

You can expect your teeth to be whitened within weeks of using this toothpaste twice a day. Considering that you are not paying for expensive dental procedures, this is very reasonable.

Sensodyne Pronamel Whitening Toothpaste

Before I jump into a rant, let me just say, that this paste will help whiten your teeth. Results will be evident within 4-weeks of using it twice a day. It does not taste as good as other products on this list. But, it is not too bad either.

Crest Pro Health HD Toothpaste

At Dental Dorks we have somewhat mixed feelings about this toothpaste by Crest.

This is a two-step whitening kit. Essentially you are getting two different bottles with toothpastes in the same package.

This first bottle, or first step, is meant to remove existing plaque. It contains the active ingredient stannous fluoride known for its anti-gingivitis properties. The second step is meant to do the actual polishing and whitening of the teeth. So, the second bottle contains hydrogen peroxide whitening gel.

Some research has indicated that certain ingredients meant to fight plaque cannot coexist as efficiently with ingredients that are meant to whiten the surfaces of teeth. For this reason, some whitening products that try to remove plaque and tooth decay usually fail in at least one respect.

Crest has come up with a duo formula, in order to assure plaque control and whitening. However, this can just as well be achieved with the use of two separate toothpastes. So, all Crest has really done, is offer two different pastes at a better price. More like, buy one, get one free type of deal.

This is not necessarily a bad thing. The toothpaste does whiten and it is generally a good product. But, you will be brushing times a day, instead of two. Since, you will be applying two different product each time you brush.

After the second wash your mouth will feel fresh and clean. Teeth will be whiter within a couple of weeks.

Do not rinse before finishing both steps. To save time, you can brush for one minute with each paste, for a total of minutes, twice a day.

Colgate Optic White Express Toothpaste

White teeth in days. This is what it says on the bottle. Hence, it was hard to resist not to try this particular product by Colgate.

This review is for the Express White tube. There are three more tubes available: Radiant, High Impact White, and simply Optic White.

Well, teeth were not whiter after three days. It took around weeks to see noticeable difference. On the second day, however, my teeth became a little sensitive. Nothing too bad, but yet worth mentioning for people with sensitive teeth who are considering this product.

This is not a gel formula, so it is thicker and it sits on the brush head more comfortably. It also feels denser when brushing.

The Optic White also tastes good and it leaves you with a fresh breadth in your mouth. The foaming that forms in the mouth also feels good and natural. Even though, the toothpaste is not made out of natural ingredients.

One problem that we found was that tubes were ¾ full. We ordered a deal of tubes, and they were all ¾ full. Not sure if this was a batch defect or if this is how all tubes are filled.

As mentioned above, there are three more versions of this toothpaste that you can try. I feel like they will all work the same in terms of whitening. I only say this, judging by the active and inactive ingredients found in each variation of Optic White. They are all the same, with slight variation of the amount.

Bright Up Charcoal Toothpaste

Bright Up is a relatively new brand on the dental market. Their other products teeth whitening kits and are listed under the company name Black Coco. Not sure why that is, but I usually approach such product with a fair dose of scepticism.

The fact that there is very little information about this black charcoal toothpaste made me even more sceptic to review it. But, since I like living on the edge and taking one for the team, I had to give it a try.

First thing you will notice at the back of the bottle is that it is made in China. On top of this, there is a different brand name on it – House Living. This brings the brand names associated with this product to a total of This is a big red flag at this point.

The second thing you will notice, is that Charcoal is listed at the very bottom of the ingredients list. Even after water. This usually means that the degree of condensation of the ingredient as part of the formula is nearly inexistent. In other words, this is hardly a charcoal toothpaste.

Brushing your teeth with this paste does not feel good. It leaves a gross aftertaste of old bubble gum.

Irritating! This paste is not made for sensitive gums. After one brush your teeth will hurt.

Does it whiten your teeth? Who knows? This product is not worth testing more than a day. Therefore, I cannot speak for long lasting results, or any results at all.

What To Look For

Most whitening toothpaste manufacturers and brands claim that their products work in a matter of days. To this day, there is not one such paste that we have tested.

There are two distinguished ways for teeth whitening products to work. Each way can be attributed to a variety of products, such as toothpastes, dental procedures or stripes.

The first common whitening method uses the employment of different abrasives. The aim is to remove stains left by food, wine, coffee, cigarettes, and whatever else you chew on.

The second method is when a high concentrated bleaching formula is used to change the color of teeth. Knowing this is important, but not enough when it comes to matching the right whitening toothpaste to your teeth.

Here are some basics to look for when shopping

ADA Approval – this is a must for any dental product that you are purchasing in the United States. ADA (American Dental Association) is your first line of defence when looking for a legitimate product. The entire organization exists to provide accountability and keep oral health manufacturers in check. This section here will help clarify how ADA approves dental health products.

Bleaching – If you are looking for a quicker whitening solution by using over-the-counter products, then you need to opt in for the bleaching effect.

Level of Abrasivity – This regulates the whitening ability of the toothpaste. Higher abrasive levels will deliver better and faster results. Any whitening toothpaste has some degree of abrasives, since they are the proactive units that scrub off stains.

Enamel Protection – Read the label and make sure enamel protection is mentioned somewhere on the tube. ADA does not allow this to be advertised, unless the correct substances are present. Below is a list of active ingredients that you need to understand before buying any whitening product.

Calprox is a relatively new formula that prevents plaque buildup. It is formulated with baking soda and 1other non-abrasive elements. It is considered to be far safer when compared to competitive whitening ingredients. It is always good if present.

Hydrated silica is a mild abrasive that helps remove plaque when combined with low levels of calcium carbonate. It also gives the toothpaste a smoother gel-like quality.

Hydrogen peroxide is perhaps the most used chemical compound in whitening products around the world. It is well-known for its bleaching effect.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is usually present in whitening strips. Its purpose is to protect teeth from adhering new stains.

Potassium Nitrate is a chemically synthesized and FDA approved compound that reduces sensitivity in teeth. It does so by protecting the nerves and enamel.

Sodium Bicarbonate is your good old baking soda. It is used to freshen the breath and eliminate a variety of harmful acids in the mouth.

Sodium Monofluorophosphate is just a fancy name for Fluorite. It is one of few ingredients that has been proven to strengthen the enamel, prevent the formation of cavities and reduce sensitivity in teeth.

Sodium Tripolyphosphate is another ingredient that is formulated to remove teeth stains from the surface.

Strontium Chloride is used to reduce dental hypersensitivity.

Do Whitening Toothpastes Work

They sure do. There are plenty of good products on the market that will help whiten your teeth.

Before purchasing, however, you need to set realistic goals. Do not expect results within days. On average it will take weeks before you can see noticeable results.

Same day whitening is only possible through dental procedures.

Also, different teeth have inherently different colors. What whitens my teeth, might not necessarily work for someone else. The number one reason is that not all teeth are naturally white.

In this case, it is better to go with a dental procedure, because whitening products are only capable of restoring the original color of your teeth. They do not work like applying white paint on a yellow wall.

All Bristles Are Not Created Equal

There is a nearly unanimous consensus among dental professionals that the bristles of a toothbrush should be soft. With harder bristles, there is a greater likelihood of gum damage. According to the American Dental Association, brushes with angled or multi-level bristles are more effective than brushes with bristles that are all the same length.

Hold on Tight

As with the other parts of the toothbrush, the handle should be one that is comfortable and easy for you to hold firmly. You may prefer one with a no-slip grip handle. Slightly curved handles or flexible handles may be better than straight ones at getting to difficult-to-reach places.

Our impression

Due to its extra-soft bristles, this seems to be the toothbrush of choice if you have very sensitive teeth and gums including sensitivity from gum disease as a result of dental work or because of chemotherapy.

This toothbrush is frequently endorsed by dental professionals, and its loyal users often first learn about it when they are given a sample at a dental visit.

Some people alternate the Nimbus with an electric toothbrush particularly when they feel the electric toothbrush is too harsh for everyday use. In fact, many users report that the Nimbus cleans as effectively or almost as effectively as an electric toothbrush.

This mineral is used in water purification filters

Activated carbon is also used in a number of everyday products and processes such as water filters and the decaffeination of coffee. You probably make use of it every day without even realising.

As tooth enamel thins, the yellower inner layer of dentin starts to show through. So ironically, teeth whitening with an abrasive method can eventually lead to teeth becoming yellower.

Proven Whitening Formula

Shouldn’t brushing your teeth make them white anyway? Luckily, this does! Our teeth whitening gel is a high-quality oral health solution that has been thoroughly tested to make sure that it delivers the results it promises.

Our product features a blend of organic charcoal toothpaste and active minerals that have been proved to dramatically improve oral health. If you have been battling yellowed teeth, bad breath, and other common oral ailments, this is Dental Expert’s activate charcoal toothpaste is your ideal solution.

This powerful charcoal powder formula has a touch of mint to add a refreshing flavor and it is proven to polish your teeth, strengthen your enamel and detoxify your mouth.

Safe & Effective

The other frustrating thing is good quality strips and other teeth whitening treatments can cost a fortune, and I really don’t want to use my hard-earned dollars on something that makes my teeth feel like they’re going to fall out.

The product has an average 4.5-star rating, and 80 percent of all of the reviews are FIVE STARS.

What to Do Instead

Activated charcoal is not a magic health bullet, but there are some things you can do or take instead.

To reduce gas and bloating: Stay away from sugar-free gums with artificial sweeteners such as sorbitol and manitol, advises Sasson, and stick to a whole-food, plant-based diet.

To whiten teeth: Try at-home whitening kits that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, and ask your dentist about in-office whitening procedures that can reduce more serious discoloration. Swish water in your mouth after drinking beverages that tend to stain teeth, such as coffee and tea, and skip colas altogether.

Activated Charcoal Teeth Whitening Toothpaste

The past is compatible with all the Oral-B toothbrush so you can be sure that such a combination will give you the best results. This, however, excludes the Oral-B sonic brushes. The toothpaste does not just whiten your teeth but also make sure that you are safe from cavities. The fluoride toothpaste makes sure that you are always protected from tooth cavities. You can still be sure that your enamel will always be safe when you use this toothpaste. This is a perfect combination of teeth stain protection and 3D tooth whitening.

Manufacturers heat the carbon source to extremely high temperatures (between 600 and 900 degrees Celsius). They use hot gases in an inert atmosphere (e.g.,, nitrogen or argon). Then the carbonized material is reintroduced into an oxidized atmosphere, again at extremely high temperatures.

Chemical activation

Manufacturers can also introduce an acid, a strong base, or a salt to the carbon source before heating it (2). This method decreases the temperature at which carbonization and activation occur (3).

Either way, this process results in an extremely fine, black powder. This powder has millions of tiny pores and a massive surface area. One group of researchers developed activated carbon with a surface area of over 3,000 meters per single gram (4). Therefore, activated charcoal is ideal for trapping toxins.

How Activated Charcoal Works

The key to activated charcoal’s health benefits lie in its unique structure. Stripping away all the oxygen with high heat and chemicals leaves the end product with countless nooks and crannies—in which to trap harmful particles.

Researchers studying this phenomenon found that orally administering activated charcoal—half an hour after ingesting a toxic substance—decreased the substance’s absorption by 47% (5).

Activated charcoal also carries a negative charge, so it attracts heavy metals and other toxins (which are usually positively charged) (6).

Activated Charcoal Uses

The World Health Organization includes activated charcoal as an “essential medicine” for treatment in emergency detox situations (7). It’s actually been a mainstay in hospitals for quite some time.

Ideally, you’d never have to worry about these types of accidental-poisoning scenarios. But sometimes, even when you do take every sensible precaution, things happen. Perhaps you have curious pets or young children, who won’t be aware of the potential consequences before ingesting something dangerous.

Keep activated charcoal on hand to use as an emergency detox for accidentally swallowing poison.

Remember: Sometimes activated charcoal isn’t the best solution. It works on many toxins, but it’s ineffective against corrosive agents (e.g., lye, iron, lithium, boric acid, and petroleum products) (9). Identifying the toxin before you apply treatment is key.

Activated charcoal can also help you in less extreme cases (e.g., you’re fighting off food poisoning) (10).

Activated charcoal’s porous structure and massive surface area make it ideal to remove toxins and other impurities from the skin. It has already made its way into countless cosmetic products, as well as recipes for homemade cleansers, facial masks, and body scrubs.

I couldn’t track down any relevant scientific studies, but I would love to see some research done in the near future. However, there are tons of anecdotal accounts of people using activated charcoal topically and noticing improvements to their skin. It’s definitely not going to hurt you, and it might help. If you have some powder and are curious, it’s worth a try.

Just like whitening you teeth, there’s no need to use activated charcoal on your skin every day. Once or twice a week is ideal.

Activated charcoal is available in liquid and powder forms. You can either buy loose powder, capsules, or tablets.

This stuff is pretty affordable and widely available. You can find it at drugstores (e.g., Walgreens and CVS), grocery stores, health and vitamin shops, and online.

Zen Charcoal Activated Charcoal Powders

This brand is interesting because it offers two different versions of charcoal: one made from hardwood trees and another made from coconuts. They recommend the coconut version for internal applications because the powder is so fine, and the hardwood version for external applications (e.g., teeth whitening).

Potential Side Effects

Activated charcoal is natural and very safe for the vast majority of people. With that being said, there are a few situations when you need to be a bit more careful.

One of the biggest potential issues arises if you’re taking prescription medication. It’s tempting to want to take all of your pills and supplements at the same time, but throwing activated charcoal into the mix might limit your body’s ability to absorb the medication (14). Wait at least 90 minutes after you take your medications before taking activated charcoal. Then it won’t interfere with absorption.

Pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers also have to take special care. Taking activated charcoal is probably safe for them as well, but they should run it by their doctors first.

In some cases, digestive conditions that obstruct the GI tract are a good reason to stay away from activated charcoal completely.

When in doubt, check with your doctor before you get started! That’s especially true if you’re planning to start ingesting activated charcoal regularly.

One more thing: Don’t worry if your stools turn a darker color after you start taking activated charcoal. It’s completely normal. If you feel constipated, back off your charcoal intake and reassess.

Cellulose Gum, Sodium Fluoride, Water, Carbomer, Sorbitol, Disodium Pyrophosphate, Peg-20M, Polythene, Flavor, Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrated Silica, and Titanium Dioxide just to mention a few. All these ingredients work harmoniously to not only clean but give your teeth a dazzling sparkle as well. This toothpaste is also regarded as one of the fastest working whitening toothpaste.

In a matter of days, this toothpaste can transform a dull smile to a dazzling one. It not only removes surface stains but also contains Whitelock Technology, a feature that enables the toothpaste to keep away any new stains even in between your teeth. The Crest 3D White Toothpaste does this through micro-cleansing teeth whiteners and as mentioned above, foaming action, which helps in whitening your teeth for that perfect smile. It goes without saying, a smile not only boosts your confidence but also makes you approachable and brings some positive vibrations your way.

A white smile will leave no chance for gloom since if you can’t smile on your own, the people around you will try to make you smile just to see your set of sparkly teeth. However, most whitening toothpastes come with the promise of delivering white teeth but never give or take forever to show results. With Crest 3D White Toothpaste, you don’t have to wait for long, according to the manufacturers, all it takes is five days.

Also, it is advisable to brush your teeth twice in a day, but the Crest 3D White Toothpaste can guarantee white teeth with a single brush every day. Still, for best oral hygiene, always brush your teeth in the morning and after meals before going to bed. Crest 3D White Toothpaste is safe for your teeth also thanks to silica, a polishing agent that is proven to help in maintaining a healthy tooth enamel.

Most people opt to use both regular toothpaste and whitening toothpaste because they think the latter only whitens teeth while the former comprise of ingredients that clean your teeth. However, thanks to the cleaning silica in Crest 3D White Toothpaste, all regular stains are removed from your teeth every time you use the whitening toothpaste. The same ingredient is used in regular toothpastes for the same purpose.

Also, Crest 3D White Toothpaste contains Fluoride; an ingredient known to protect your teeth against cavities and one that also aids in the strengthening of your tooth enamel. Why would you use regular toothpaste when Crest 3D White Toothpaste has all the ingredients contained in it plus more? For best results, brush either after meals or twice a day.

Crest 3D White Toothpaste is recommended for people aged six years and over. You can use it for kids under six years but only use a pea-sized amount of the toothpaste. Also, supervise your children until they know how to brush their teeth perfectly; they might swallow the toothpaste. Also, in case you mistakably swallow more toothpaste than required for brushing, get medical attention at once.

Time period

While teeth whitening toothpastes eradicates the problem of stained teeth and adds some glitter to your smile, it is wise not to use them for long periods. Unlike their regular counterparts, most teeth whitening toothpastes have more abrasive agents. These agents are effective in removing plaques, reducing your chances of periodontal disease, and decreasing cavities.

However, excessive use of whitening toothpaste might lead to some dangerous side effects. It’s no wonder dentist recommend that you use whitening toothpaste for at least a month then switch back to normal toothpaste for a while. Still, to avoid damaging your enamel or causing tooth sensitivity, look for a whitening toothpaste that you can alternate with a regular counterpart after some time.

Makeshift products

As mentioned earlier, there are thousands of whitening toothpastes all across the world. Hell, even startup companies are launching their products and acquiring certificates to distribute them without extensive research and testing. As such, you might buy a product that will end up doing more harm to your oral hygiene than good.

There was an issue back in 200when the FDA ordered against the use of any toothpaste labeled made in China. The government did it due to claims of a toxic antifreeze agent (diethylene glycol) present in the toothpaste. The government has also recently moved against imported toothpaste containing the dangerous chemical. Check your whitening toothpaste for this chemical before making a purchase.

Approval seal

Lastly, check the seal of approval from the American Dental Association. Participation may be voluntary, but the rigorous tests every toothpaste tube bearing this seal contains make it safe. Still, some good and reliable brands might not have this seal, it doesn’t mean that they are harmful. However, to be on the same side, always use certified products.

When you’ve tried every teeth whitening product out there, and have yet to see results, maybe you feel that teeth stains and stale breath cannot be remedied anymore. The answer to natural teeth whitening is not beyond us. In fact, it is so much closer to home than most people would think. It’s charcoal. More accurately, Activated charcoal.

Whitening teeth with activated charcoal is often met with scepticism by people, who, looking at the black powder of the charcoal wonder how on earth it can clean, and turn stained teeth white.

Ever since the time of industrialization, activated charcoal has been used as a medicine in treating patients with severe poisoning. It’s toxin binding properties are extremely effective at binding to toxins from household chemicals, medicines, and other chemicals from the body, especially when consumed within 30 minutes of ingestion. This is why it is one of the best treatment for any kind of poisoning, but you should not take within several hours of medications and vitamins that do need to be absorbed. Activated charcoal is primarily a form of carbon that’s been treated to make the surface of its particles absorbent. The enormous surface with its little nooks and crannies act like magnets for other particles, which it absorbs and then brushes away when the charcoal is washed off.

Activated Charcoal is safe for use within health and beauty products since it is a powder made from a carbon-rich item like coconut husks, nut shells, bamboo, peat, and wood. You can also find scientific evidence that shows how activated charcoal can remove toxins from the body, so it would be fair to assume that it can have similar benefits in the mouth.
