At first Model Performance 475, definitely rules this price category. Not only because of its efficiency but also because of the cooking space. It is a great choice for a family of people. It is a grill worth its price which is something under 200 dollars.
Electronic ignition enables the fast and definite start. There is a side burner added, if it is not in use you can cover it closing the cover. This way you will get more place for cooking.
A cover of this grill is made of stainless steel, additionally it has a sensor of temperature on the top of it which will enable you to control the temperature. The elements such as handle or the steering panel complete the product when it comes to style. It is definitely a very nice product concerning the look and price. Take a look at more significant features.
Inside the grill there is a fat tray which can be easily removed to clean up. The grill has two small wheels which enable it to move it to the desired place. On the sides you will find two shelves which will be useful for sure during preparing your meals.
Char-Griller 300Grillin’ Pro
Obviously, there’s an electric ignition that allows to maintain a stable temperature (you can find a temperature sensor on the top of the lid). The barbeque is equipped with burners that allow to get the right temperature fast.
The cast-iron grates are coated with porcelain, which prevents corrosion and makes cleaning easy. Here’s my tip, remember not to clean it with metal scrappers. Use a soft bristle or a nylon grill brush. Not to mention they prevent food from sticking, which is very useful when grilling.
It’s a grill made of steel, painted using the powder coating. It has two big wheels that allow to easily move the barbeque around if necessary. Unfortunately, many people complain about poor quality of of the material the wheels were made of. But it’s the kind of flaw that doesn’t cause trouble when grilling.
Char-Broil Classic 280 2-Burner
It’s a two burner grill with the option of buying an extra side burner that may come in handy for making sauces. It is much smaller than the models I already described earlier. The cooking space is 280 square inches.
Char-Broil Classic 360
The extended version of a classis, it has the same options as its smaller counterpart. You can read about it above. The price is almost the same. A good barbeque for a bigger group of people.
Just like its predecessor, it’s a good choice. Thanks to its size it will work great for a bigger group of people. It is definitely worth its price, for this kind of money you get everything needed to have a barbeque.
Char-Broil Quickset 3-Burner
My last suggestion in this price range. Far below the expected price, one of the cheapest gas barbeques. And one of the bigger ones at this price at the same time.
It has burners that heat up to high temperatures in just few minutes. On the top of the lid you will also find a termometer that will allow you to perfectly control the temperature. The lid itself is made of steel and coated with porcelain.
Weber Spirit I E-210
Weber Spirit E-2is characterized by high quality of workmanship, very high efficiency and simplicity. Are you one of those people who consider all those different features many people don’t even use to be unnecessary? Remember that all of those innovative solutions have a huge impact on the price. This grill doesn’t have any extra features, which makes its price significantly lower.
It is equipped with two burners made of stainless steel that produce 26,500 BTU-per-hour. It allows the grill to reach the right cooking temperature pretty fast.
The cooking area isn’t among the biggest, but you still have 360 square inches of the main area and 90 square inches of the Warming rack at your disposal. That’s not much, but enough to make it possible to cook using the indirect method.
Porcelain-coated cast iron cooking grates – very good quality, they leave grill marks on the food.
Grease Management – simple and convenient, the grease is directed to the grease tray or to the catch pan. Both of them are very easy to clean, a full tray can be thrown away in the trash and replaced with a new grease tray or an empty frying pan.
If you’re looking for a very good gas grill which is as inexpensive as it can get, you’ve just found it. In most cases a truly decent grill will cost a little more, the price is largely influenced by the extra features that make cooking on the grill more convenient.
This grill doesn’t come with any interesting extra features or different technologies. But remember one thing when it comes to Weber Spirit E-2It’s a grill made for those who simply wish to cook very tasty food on a reliable and efficient equipment, and all of that for decent money. All the extra features only add to the grill’s price, Spirit E-2is a simple gas grill that is efficient and durable.
The size of the grill is perfect for everyone, especially for small backyards and other limited areas. It’s the smallest full-sized grill from Weber. It has foldable side shelves.
Among other things worth mentioning is also assembly. The assembly manual is well made which makes the assembly of this grill an easy task and doesn’t require much time ( usually about an hour ).
Char-Broil Performance 475
The entire area is heated by burners that generate 36,000-BTU. It is worth noting that inside the side shelf you will also find a side burner (10,000-BTU) hidden under a small lid, which will certainly make it useful for preparing things like sauces or for quick food heating.
The main grates are made of cast iron coated with porcelain, they’re great at holding heat evenly and, when maintained properly, prevent food from sticking to the grates. The heated rack, on the other hand, was coated with porcelain and can be easily unfolded when needed.
Removable Grease Pan – It’s a solution that makes your grill easy to clean, the grease that comes out of the food during cooking drips directly onto a special tray. All you have to do is remove the tray, get the grease off it and put it back in its place. Easy, quick and swift.
Char-Broil is the leader in the best budget gas grill category, for a decent price you can get a really good grill that will live up to your expectations when cooking.
The grill’s lid is made of stainless steel, equipped with a handle and a temperature meter. All of that gives it a pleasant appearance and functionality.
Difficult to assemble
I think it’s a very good choice for a bigger family. Such cooking area and number of burners allow to prepare a whole lot of food. Four burners provide good efficiency and make it possible to cook using the indirect method.
It should serve you for many seasons, but if you’re expecting something much better, check out my other suggestions. I’d like to point out that a gas grill made of much higher quality materials and of a size similar to Char-Broil Performance 47costs at least twice as much.
That’s why I believe that Char-Broil Performance 47 is a decent, big and inexpensive grill that works and looks very nice. Simply a medium class gas grill that is worth its money. I’d say it’s a good choice for this kind of money, considering all its downsides and upsides.
One of the cheapest available gas grills, it is a proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune on a basic simple grill. What can you expect for that kind of price? A cheap, decent grill for a small family that will allow you to prepare tasty food easily – nothing more.
It is one of the smaller gas grills, it only has 280 square inches of cooking area. It was equipped with two steel burners that generate 20.000 BTU’s of heat. Under the lid you’ll find porcelain coated grates.
Of course it has an electronic ignition system – Piezo Ignition. You have to spend over hours assembling this grill, for many people it’s a difficult task so it’s a good idea to consider the option of buying an assembled grill at extra charge.
One advantage of it is its size, which is very attractive for those with smaller area in their backyard.
If some important element breaks down in the future, I advise you to consider replacing the grill with a new one as the cost of repair might be only slightly lower than purchasing a brand new grill.
Budget Pick Char-Broil Performance 300
Another good cheap gas grill, not very popular and in my opinion unappreciated. A grill in a lower price range, the main cause of the lower price is its size. A small gas grill that was actually very well-made despite what you may think. I’d say it’s a great choice for a really small family, a couple, a single person or for those with limited space. It is worth remarking that the quality is really high here, especially relative to the price.
A very good alternative to big full-sized gas grills ( which usually cost at least twice as much ), it is characterized by good quality of workmanship, efficiency and durability. It warms up fast, relatively evenly and holds heat well.
The cooking area is 300 square inches ( can hold 1burgers ). The heat under the grates is generated by two burners that can produce 24,000-BTU. Besides that, it is also equipped with an electronic ignition that allows to start the grill quickly and reliably.
The grates are made of cast iron and coated with porcelain. They hold heat well and prevent food from sticking to the grates.
You’re wondering what happens to the grease during cooking? Char-Broil Performance 300 is equipped with a simple solution that allows to get rid of grease quickly and easily. I’m talking here about the Removable Grease Pan – a simple removable grease tray ( the tray was coated with porcelain ).
It comes with foldable metal side shelves that are very useful when cooking as well as a compartment where you can keep the propane tank.
The stylish steel lid is also equipped with a temperature reader, which allows you to reliably control the temperature.
Weber Genesis II E-4There are four key features that allow this gas grill to distinguish itself from the rest. The four key features include an electronic ignition system, burners with high-performance output and endurance, a flavorizer bar system, and system for grease management.
With over 30 years of grilling and culinary experience, Weber has created this innovative gas grill to give clients a great product at a great price.
Additionally, the Weber Genesis includes porcelain enameled, cast iron cooking grates ideal for all types of meats including fish, shrimp, and meat, among other delicacies. It includes a thin side and a wider side to enhance the flavor of your food.
For a change, let me present to you a completely different type of grill, it’s an outdoor griddle fueled with propane. A grill that is very easy to use, a very huge advantage of which is the large flat cooking area. It works great for cooking simple and low requirement food for breakfast, lunch or dinner and for any place where you have to cook a large amount of food in the shortest possible time ( parties, restaurants etc ).
In this model, the cooking area is whole 720 square inches.
An outdoor gas griddle has plenty of upsides and downsides when compared to traditional gas grills. For example, a regular grill has grates that make it impossible to cook an egg or pancakes without special accessories. A griddle on the other hand is characterized by its large flat area and works great for cooking eggs, pancakes, fishes, steaks, hamburgers, vegetables and many other dishes.
You need to know that it’s a whole different way to cook. Under the flat cooking area, you will find burners that you can set according to your needs, creating four different cooking areas. If you only cook for one person or two, it is enough to use a single burner, whereas if you’re planning a party for a big group of 10+ people, all you have to do is start all the burners and easily cook for everyone.
Outdoor Griddle are very efficient and enjoy huge popularity in restaurants and at parties. They allow to easily cook a very large amount of food in a short time, which is what makes them so popular in many commercial places. On top of that, it is worth noting that they are also easy to clean. The excess grease that accumulates during cooking freely drips down into a special container.
Obviously, when it comes to this type of grills, you have to take great care of cleaning them after each cooking. For that purpose you have to carefully clean the surfaces using the right methods.
Griddle Surround Table Accessory – I really recommend it if you’re going to cook food in places with plenty of people. It’s a great solution that offers you a whole lot of extra space to work around your grill. Such approach gives you plenty of interesting solutions, one of the best ones is simply the ability for other people to join you and watch you prepare the food while standing directly next to the grill. On top of that, you also have place to put some drink or your own food, like you were sitting at a table.
I love this grill for its versatility, convenience and ability to prepare really fast meals. It is great regardless of the number of people you cook for, for a group of ten or for a couple. I really like cooking hamburgers and all kind of breakfasts on it. It heats up fast and evenly.
Not only is it capable of any grilling task, but the cooking technology within it make it one of the best gas grills on the market. It has everything you can imagine with the capabilities of a full outdoor kitchen.
This gas grill includes main burners with infrared rear burner and infrared side burner, giving you the option to cook in at least different ways.
Before I get started with our top pick reviews, I’d like to share with you some vital information when considering the purchase of a grill.
The place to grill – you have to think very thoroughly about where you’re going to cook on your gas grill. This is what the size of the grill you’re going to buy will depend on. If you wish to cook on a camping ground or in a park, then you need to buy a portable grill, check my buyer’s guide here. If you’re going to be grilling in your own backyard, though, the best choice will obviously be a full-sized stationary gas grill.
The size – Obviously the people with a large terrace or patio have the luxury of not having to worry about the limitations arising from having a smaller space. Let’s assume that you need a full-sized gas grill, in that case you have to take your backyard’s size into account, so that the new grill can perfectly fit into your space. People with a very limited area should pay attention to the side shelves, in plenty of cases they are foldable which gives you a little more space in your surroundings when not using the grill.
How many people you cook for – A very important question that has two key aspects tied to it that you absolutely have to consider. What I’m talking about is the size of the grill and the cooking area size. You need a grill for a small family or for bigger parties? Small gas grills are just big enough for 2-people, which of course doesn’t mean we won’t be able to serve a party for people using those. It will just be much more difficult, a smaller cooking area will require better management on our part and not all guests will get their food at the same time. Therefore if you mostly cook for 2-people you should pick a medium sized or small gas grill. If you throw many parties or cook for a bigger number of people, pick a large grill, which will simply be more convenient.
What you want to cook – The size of a grill brings certain limitations, a small gas grills with two burners comes with slightly smaller options. That’s why a medium sized or large grill is preferred, which has a lot more space to offer, thus allowing to cook many different kinds of food. If you’re planning to cook such things as a whole chicken, turkey or beef ribs, you’re going to need a bigger grill. On the other hand, if you’re only planning to cook smaller pieces of food such as steaks, hamburgers, fish, vegetables or chicken wings then a smaller gas grill will be just enough for you.
Multiple Burners – To have a successful cookout, you want to be sure your grill has at least two burners. Don’t bother with any grills that only include one burner since you won’t achieve an even heat distribution with anything fewer than two. The more burners your grill includes, the better! It is the best for a gas grill to have at least burners, such number allows to cook using the indirect heat cooking method. That way you can slowly sear meat such as ribs or a roast using the gas grill. A bigger number of burners also allows to create areas of different temperatures.
Quality – A high-quality gas grill should last you several years. The better ones on the market are usually made from stainless steel, cast aluminum or brass. These materials are corrosion-resistant and built from heavy gauge materials to last consumers a long time. If you notice that your grill is poorly made, don’t bother purchasing it as it will let you down within a couple of years.
Lid – This may seem like common sense, however, many grills (including expensive ones) may not come with a lid. This limits the type of cooking you do drastically as you’ll want a lid to keep foods warm and achieve better results.
Grates – The heavier they are, the better and more durable they are, heavier grates can hold more heat for a longer time. Another important thing is the space between the grate bars being small enough, make sure that your grates don’t have their bars too far apart. That way you will limit the risk of smaller pieces of food falling under the grates. Cast-iron or steel grates? You will find a detailed answer to that question in this post. Steel grates are easier to clean, don’t require maintenance and cool down faster. Cast-iron grates hold heat much better, but they require regular maintenance in order to avoid corrosion. If you ask me, the best choice is porcelain enameled cast-iron grates, which are characterized by being two-sided.
Innovative technology – This is something for those with bigger wallets since gas bbq grills equipped with all kinds of technologies are much more expensive. Remember that most technologies are there to increase the convenience of using your grill or are just regular gadgets. Different manufacturers offer different innovative patents and systems that increase the convenience of using the grill. For example, there’s the GSgrilling system that Weber gas grills are known for, or different kinds of bluetooth thermometers & timers that make it possible to connect with your cellphone using a special app where you can then monitor the cooking process. Such apps make it possible to check the temperature inside the grill, the temperature inside the meat or the fuel level.
Fuel Types – If you haven’t considered how you plan on fueling your gas grill, now is the time to do so. You have two options: propane or natural gas. The main difference between the two is that propane gas grills can be moved around since they only require a portable refillable tank. On the other hand, natural gas gives you the option of connecting your grill to your homes natural gas plumbing. The advantage here is that you’ll never need to refill a gas tank, however, your gas grill will most likely become stationary.
Warranty – Higher quality grills will normally come with longer warranties. Ironically, when purchasing a high-value gas grill, you will never need to use the warranty because the product itself is well refined and reliable. It is however, always nice to know that the manufacturer stands behind their product and is willing to cover any malfunctions you may encounter.
Budget – The most determining factor that impacts our decision. Local stationary or online stores have plenty of rich offers, obviously the bigger selection a store has the harder it is to make the right decision. The best solution is to compare the grill parameters by yourself so that you can be sure you won’t overpay. That’s why I tried to choose gas grills for you that are in different price ranges.
If you find a reputable gas grill with these traits, you are off to a great start! Of course, there are many other factors to consider before making a large investment such as this one. The ideal gas grill for you depends on your intended use, taste and budget.
First of all, the most important thing to me was the price to quality ratio. I know how important the price we pay for a gas grill is, which is why I chose the best models in different price ranges. That way you get a bigger choice that fits your criteria.
You need to know that the best gas grills have prices in the range of about 400 to 800 dollars. That’s the most popular price range that I put a particular focus on. For this kind of price you can own a really good, versatile, durable and efficient grill without unnecessary additions like side burners or grates that only raise the price significantly.
Of course I also took a careful look at the grills in a much lower price range. Plenty of people are looking for a best cheap gas grill that gets good reviews. You need to know that they are characterized by much lower quality and durability, but I am perfectly aware that not everyone needs a durable grill for years or more. Still, gas grills in this budget category can live up to the expectations when it comes to cooking.
Having selected the gas grills I believed to be the most promising, I could move on to the most important part, which was the tests. Before I started writing a review for all those gas grills, I had to properly test them all. That way I spent some time ( few days ) testing gas grills in order to find their upsides and downsides. Just for the purpose of testing, I divided the grills into groups so that they could all fit a particular price range. It is obvious that a gas grill in a lower price range will significantly differ when compared with a premium class model that costs several times as much. That’s why I created groups for the sake of unbiased and fair testing.
And that’s how I spent the next few days cooking all kinds of food, observing and analyzing the results. I did it using different kinds of cooking techniques and methods.
First I cooked large quantities of hamburgers and steaks to see if a grill heats up evenly. I would heat up the grill to a particular temperature, then place meat all over its area. That way I would cook hamburgers and steaks separately for a specified amount of time ( the amount recommended by cooks ). When I was done cooking was when the time came to compare how each grill cooked the meat. The goal of this task was to see if a grill warms up evenly. I could test it by trying and comparing each piece of meat. That way I could see which pieces of meat required more or less time due to being raw or burned.
I used each gas grill with at least burners to cook a whole chicken using the indirect method in order to see how the grill handles maintaining low or high temperatures for a longer time. Using the built-in thermometers, I would monitor the temperature throughout the entire process of cooking the chicken. That way I could see how holding the heat worked in each gas grill.
Versatility – A bigger number of burners in a gas grill allows to create several cooking areas of different temperatures. That way you can cook big pieces of meat such as a chicken or turkey using the indirect cooking method. You miss the smoke flavor you get out of a charcoal grill? There’s an easy solution to that, all you have to do is buy a smoker box or make your own smoke bomb using aluminium foil where you put wood chips. That way the smoke generated when burning the wood chips influences your food.
Cleaning – Remember after each cooking to clean the grates off the food remains and grease. For that task, you can use a special brush that will make the whole thing easier for you. Every once in a while you have to clean everything around the burner, the bottom of the grill and the burner’s pipes. You should perform such activity at least 2-times in a season. Right before the start of the winter season, remember to clean your grill before putting it under the cover for the winter.
Storing and maintenance – If you have cast-iron grates it will be necessary for you to perform regular maintenance of the cast-iron grates. How to do it? Just coat the surface of the grates with oil, like by using a special oil spray.
Another important thing is properly storing the grill throughout the entire season. Make sure that your grill gets a special cover that will protect your gas grill from harmful impact of atmospheric conditions. That way you will significantly extend your grill’s lifespan by protecting it from harmful factors such as water or sun.
Cast-iron grates; porcelain-coated.
Ash catcher is easy to remove and replace on charcoal side.
Propane side features push-button ignition for easy lighting.
Heavy; 14lbs., but is built well and can stand the elements with a suitable cover, so it shouldn’t need to be moved often, anyway.
While it isn’t the best side-by-side model you’ll find, it is definitely one of the most affordable. In fact, this grill is cheaper than most comparable models purchased separately. We recommend the Char-Griller 5050 to anyone who loves propane and charcoal equally, but doesn’t want the hassle of two isolated grills.
You can use whichever option you prefer independently, or use any combination to add the perfect finishing touches to your culinary masterpieces.
Side-by-side design; one grill runs on gas while the other runs on charcoal.
Firebox/smoker is offset to the side and features draft control.
Gas side has three stainless steel burners; 10,000 BTUs.
Charcoal side features adjustable tray to move heat closer/further from grate.
Ample cooking space (1,43square inches total): about 500 for each grill, a little over 200 for the smoker area, and about 200 for the searing burner. Note: surface area measurements are estimates.
Grates are cast iron; porcelain-coated.
Extremely heavy at 21pounds, but does come with 4-wheeled cart for easier transport.
This grill is practically an outdoor kitchen: with so many functions in one work space, it’s hard to imagine any frequent griller without it! It’s affordable for a hybrid, but especially one with the additional smoker and searing boxes on the sides. We recommend this to anyone who enjoys all aspects of outdoor cooking, and who don’t mind spending a bit more than a standard hybrid would cost them.
Weber 74100Charcoal Grill
The Weber is a backyard classic and is the only charcoal grill we reviewed in this list.
If you like simplicity, have plenty of free time for grilling, and like the taste of smoke then this could be a good fit.
The two things people love about Weber products are that they are very tight for good air control and they last a long time. It is not uncommon for a Weber product to last years or more.
Being a charcoal grill, the Weber adds about 1to 20 minutes to your cook time as you let the charcoal ash over. However, the smoky flavor that is added to your meat is a nice trade off.
It has 39sq. inches of cooking space so you can feed a large group.
The grilling kettle is sturdy and made in the USA, but the legs are flimsy aluminum tubes.
It seems that this model has changed over the years and some modifications have been made to cut costs. Parts are easy to find locally, and it is the least expensive item we considered.
CharBroil TRU-Infrared Electric Grill
This grill is a great space saver and if you are living in an apartment or condo that does not allow gas or charcoal grills, then this is your grill.
Safety and convenience make this a solid contender by eliminating the need for using and storing propane or lighter fluid. You also know when the grill is off because of the on/off indicator light on the front. Once you turn it off, it cools down quickly.
Overall, this item has a very attractive design, and it is perfect if your space is limited. There are no tables sticking out on either side and this can be a disadvantage for some people but for most of the people who want to use this grill in a little patio or balcony, then space saving design is a big advantage.
It has 250 sq. inches of cooking space, so you can still cook food and feed several people.
The legs are a bit wobbly, so you have to be careful not to bump it and also, some owners find it difficult to assemble, so it will take from one to two hours to fully assemble and use it.
CharGriller 300Grillin’ Pro Gas Grill
It has 43sq. inches of cooking area and it has three burners which put out 40,800 BTUs. It also has dual side tables with a side burner putting out 12,000 BTUs.
The barrel shape and two stacks on top allow it to cook evenly and heat quickly with a maximum temperature of 650°F. Flare-ups can be an issue, but it has a temperature gauge to help keep an eye on that.
It is also fairly efficient using very little propane to achieve these temperatures. The porcelain coated cast iron grates are removable and easy to clean.
There are two main problems with this grill. Because of the way that this product is designed, it collects grease and debris in the bottom so, you have to clean it regularly. Frequent cleaning would eliminate this issue.
An another problem is that this grill was the most difficult to assemble out of the five we considered in this list. If you are alone, it may take you from hour and 30 minutes to and 30 minutes to put it together.
It is priced on the high end of our range and if you are looking for the best cheap grill with a lot of power, several burners and large cooking space, then this may be the one.
How we tested
Over the course of four days, we put our gas grills through a battery of tests designed to demonstrate their qualities and highlight their differences. We cooked burgers on high heat to see how well they seared meat and how even and intense a heat they could generate across the whole grate surface. We slow-grilled cut-up chickens to see if the grills could hold a low temperature evenly across the whole grate. And we roasted whole chickens indirectly on both low and high heat to see if they could create browned skin and perfectly cook meat without charring. Sam Sifton, editor of the Cooking section of The New York Times (parent company of Wirecutter) joined us for these tests.
A good sear and no flare-ups: signs of a good-quality gas grill.
The Spirit E-3also exhibited the most consistent heat across the entire cooking surface.
The Spirit E-3also exhibited the most consistent heat across the entire cooking surface; among the competition, the Napoleon model in particular had noticeable cool spots toward the front of its grates. To a degree, all grills suffer this problem, because the burners don’t extend all the way to the front of the firebox, but the Spirit offered the most consistent heating across the entire grate surface. After minutes, the burgers at the rear (the hottest part of the grill) were medium-well and those at the front were medium-rare to medium (this difference might even be handy, if your diners have various preferences). On the Napoleon grill, on the other hand, some of the front burgers were nearly raw in the center, while the rear burgers were well-done. We were surprised that the Spirit once more outperformed, if only slightly, its larger, more powerful cousin, the Weber Genesis II; again, our theory is that the Spirit’s smaller firebox reflected more heat onto the grate surface.
The Weber Spirit E-3produced beautiful barbecue chicken, with crisped skin and caramelized sauce.
The Broil King ran too hot even on its lowest setting, turning out charred chicken and sauce.
During the low-and-slow grilling of the cut-up chicken, the Spirit held almost perfectly steady at 37°F, requiring almost no fiddling with the burner knobs—a quality it shared with the Genesis II. Both produced perfect barbecue chicken. By contrast, the Napoleon grill struggled to produce crisp, browned skin, and we soon discovered why: Its built-in thermometer was registering 50 degrees hotter than the actual temperature inside the grill. The result was flabby barbecue. The Broil King model had the opposite problem, running way too hot, as high as 450 °F, even with the burners on low. The result was charred chicken and burnt sauce.
Flaws but not dealbreakers
The Weber Spirit E-310’s side tables are fixed in place with bolts—they don’t fold down for storage, so you’re stuck with the full 51-inch width. Fold-downs would save only about a foot, so it’s not a huge deal, but they would be a nice option.
Weber gas grills come with a simple scale for weighing the propane tank, to give you an idea of how much fuel you have left. The Spirit E-310’s is mounted high up inside the grill cart, and we found lifting the tank onto the scale’s hook difficult; it would be impossible if the tank had the wrong sort of handle (they come in various designs, and some are too big). You may have to guess the fuel level by weighing the tank in your hands.
We wish Weber would take a cue from some competitors (including Broil King) and make the bars of its warming racks run front to back, parallel to the main grates. That way, you could easily slide a spatula under stuff that’s warming. As it is, the warming-rack bars run edge to edge, and you have to awkwardly jimmy a spatula in there sideways.

Second, clean your grill before or after every use. Joe Salvaggio of Big Apple BBQ recommends turning the burners to high and closing the lid for minutes after you’re done cooking—and then just turning them off and walking away. Next time you cook, brush the cold, soot-covered grills clean, wipe them with a wet paper towel or rag, and then proceed. That goes against the common advice, which is to clean the grates while they’re hot; Salvaggio has found that doing so more easily damages the porcelain coating on cast-iron grates, allowing rust to form.
Check the grease trap after every use (or before every use), and don’t let it get too full. If it spills over you’ll be cleaning grease out of the inside of your grill for an hour.
If a burner seems to be running cool or creates patchy flames, use a thin piece of wire (many grills come with one on a chain) to clean out the gas ports, the little holes. There’s nothing inside the burners to break, so don’t feel like you have to be delicate.
Take the battery out of the igniter before you store the grill long-term. Batteries can burst and corrode the igniter contacts.
About once a year (usually before winter storage), many grill enthusiasts do a deep clean of the whole grill, soaking the grates in hot soapy water and scrubbing them, and scrubbing down the firebox and rinsing it with a hose. That’s probably good practice.
The grates also take a beating, and eventually most start to rust. That’s not necessarily a problem in itself, as you can oil iron grates and season them as you would a cast-iron skillet. But if they were originally porcelain-coated (as our pick and upgrade’s are), you may get chips of porcelain in your food, and that’s not a good thing. Again, you can replace them with factory parts or third-party alternatives.
Weber Spirit E-310
Although it seems pricey at first glance, when it comes to quality for the price, experts and owners agree that the Weber Spirit E-3is a great value. It’s large enough to cook for about four people, and is easy to use and clean. It’s also backed by a long warranty, good customer service and replacement parts are widely available. In other words: it will live to cook for years. It comes in both propane and natural gas version.
Nexgrill 720-0830H Gas Grill
If you need a bigger grill, but don’t want it to take too big of a bite out of your wallet, experts say you’ll love the 62square inch (total cooking surface) Nexgrill 720-0830H Gas Grill. It’s both Recommended and a Best Buy at ConsumerReports.org, Good Housekeeping calls is “a steal for its price” and it gets good ratings from hundreds of owners as well. Features include four interior burners, a side burner and an attractive, stainless steel housing.
Gas grills are the most convenient type because they heat so quickly and are easy to use: they feature knobs just like an oven’s. Many gas grills also have temperature gauges so you know when it’s at the optimal temperature (although they get terrible reviews for accuracy, so you might want to invest in a dedicated meat thermometer, which we cover in a separate report). Gas grills are versatile and can be used for both direct and indirect cooking, just like a charcoal grill — except instead of fiddling with moving charcoal around, you just have to turn off the heat on one side for indirect. You can also buy smoker boxes that hold wood chips and can be set on the flames to impart a more traditional barbecue flavor to your food.
Charcoal takes longer to light than a gas grill and controlling a charcoal grill’s heat isn’t as simple as turning a gas grill’s temperature dial. But enthusiasts say the extra trouble is worth it for the flavor that cooking over charcoal imparts. Most charcoal grills are versatile too, and can be used as smokers. Many charcoal grills are built to last for years or even decades.
While charcoal grills can often be used as smokers, a dedicated smoker will maintain a low, slow temperature better than a grill. Most people think of smokers as strictly for large, tough cuts of meats like ribs or brisket, but, in fact, smokers are quite versatile — you can even make pizza in a smoker. Many grilling aficionados say they never knew what they were missing until they added a smoker to their backyard.
Size & Cost
Charcoal grills vary in size, shape, and functionality. The best charcoal grill will be the one that meets your specific needs in a dependable way. Common types of charcoal grills include the brazier, the pellet grill, the square charcoal grill, the hibachi, the kettle, the cart, the barrel, the ceramic cooker, the tandoor oven, and the portable charcoal units. There are also a wide range of hybrids on the market that combine beneficial aspects of the above.
As we mentioned above, portability is a definite benefit of the charcoal grill. All you need is a bag of charcoal, lighting fluid, and the grill. Because of this, you will find a lot of smaller portable units that can be carried and then placed wherever you want to cook. Despite its popularity as a portable cooker, there are also many larger less mobile grills out there. Whether they are full sized commercial charcoal grills or smaller household units that can be wheeled around, you can go as small or as large as you want.
The best charcoal grill will not always be the most expensive model.
Lump charcoal is a favorite among charcoal grill users who prefer a ‘traditional’ grilling experience. Lump charcoal begins its life as wood that is buried under ground. Covered with a metal sheet and dirt, the wood is lit on one end and left to smolder for a few days. Deprived of oxygen, the fire burns through all the impurities in the wood. This includes insects, water, and sap. After a few days, the wood can be removed. What you are left with is pure carbon.
Lump charcoal is also known as lump charcoal or char. People prefer lump charcoal because it is considered a dynamic cooking experience. Coals spark and crackle as they begin to burn. It usually takes only 10-1minutes for lump charcoal to reach its hottest temperature. Be aware though that after it hits its high temperature, it will begin losing its temperature rather quickly. Sometimes, it can go from high to medium heat in less than 30 minutes. Fire will need to be occasionally replenished in order to keep the heat at the desired level. This is made simpler by the fact that any new charcoal you add will quickly heat up and helps maintain the correct temperature. When cooking, the food will have the woody scents of the lump charcoal imparted on it improving the taste. Hardwoods are the preferred source of wood for lump charcoal and your typical bag will include a number of different hardwoods.
How Do Charcoal Grills Work
Charcoal grills can range in complexity. While some swear that the best charcoal grill has to be complicated and come with a lot of options, others swear that the best charcoal bbq grill is basic and straightforward. No matter where you fall on this argument, it helps to know how a charcoal grill works. Unlike gas grills, charcoal grills are surprisingly straightforward.
You start with having to heat the coals. The coals are your fuel source and they need to be activated and heated prior to use. Some use a chimney starter for this while others simply douse the coals in lighter fluid. Either way, you will want to get them very hot to the point where they begin to glow. Spreading them out below your cooking surface, you can do the hand test to see where the heat is coming from and where you may need to reposition the coals. Once the coals are ready, you can begin cooking! An air vent on the bottom helps to control the amount of oxygen coming in while an air vent in the hood controls how much heat can escape. It is common to leave the hood on while food is cooking to ensure a better more evenly distributed cook. Also be aware that fat dripping from food can ignite when it comes in contact with the coals, occasionally causing flames to burst forth. While some prefer this because it can add taste to the food, be aware that it can also prematurely burn your food as well. Like anything relating to grills, the best thing you can do is to experiment. The more experience you get with your charcoal grill, the better you will get at operating it. In addition, you will also have a firm understanding of what you might want when it comes time to purchase your next charcoal grill.
Operating A Charcoal Grill
The best charcoal barbecue experience will come when you have a firm understanding of what your charcoal grill is capable of doing. To help further explain aspects of the charcoal grilling experience, we get into some of the most common questions asked when people are operating their charcoal grill.
How To Control The Temperature On A Charcoal Grill
There are a few ways that you can control the temperature on your charcoal grill. The first involves the use of air vents. Your typical charcoal grill will include an air vent at the base of the grill below the charcoals and an air vent built into the hood of the charcoal grill that is typically placed over the grill as things are cooking. The air is sucked in from below, providing the necessary oxygen to fuel combustion before being turned into COand being expelled from the top. By regulating the amount of oxygen coming in from below, you can decrease the amount of burning and as a result decrease the heat of your charcoal grill. This will take some trial and error to get right, as you do not want to risk depriving the coals of all oxygen.
Another way that you can manage the temperature of your grill is to spread out the charcoal bricks. If an area needs more heat, then you can move more bricks there. If an area requires less heat, then you can move the charcoal bricks away. With charcoal grills, the coolest zones will be those on the periphery and higher up while the hottest zones will be right in the middle. Because of this, most people cook things in the center and keep cooked food warm by placing on the sides.
Establish Your Need
How often do you plan to cook? What is the size of the cooking area you need? How many people will you cook for when you cook? Do you need a lot of options or can you do more with less? Are you just starting out or are you already experienced with charcoal grills? Another question to consider is whether or not you want a portable unit or a unit that is larger and mostly remains in place. Yes this is a lot of questions. However, by establishing your need ahead of time, you can get a sense for what your price range will be. You can also begin taking steps to compare different makes and models. Also, if you have no idea about size, then go one size smaller than what you were thinking. You can often do a lot with less when it comes to charcoal grills. A few hours of work can save you ten times that amount of time looking online or in stores.

When it comes to affordability, I definitely recommend the Weber 5406000Q2200 Liquid Propane Grill. It is a portable unit that offers one steel burner. Entry-level gas grills have their limitations. It is a basic fact. They usually come with a straightforward design, which is entirely acceptable anyway.
Don’t fret. There are still some entry-level grills that are using heavy-gauge stainless steel. They are not a scarce commodity. Moreover, it would be great if the stainless steel has been coated with porcelain. This particular supplement improves the overall rigidity and longevity of the grill.
A gas grill can provide more convenience to its users if it has wheels on its legs. This particular design allows you to move the grill wherever you want it to be. Considering that this device could get bulky, it is essential that casters or wheels are available. Otherwise, you have to muscle your way out so that you can get your grill in place.
If possible, you should get a gas smoker that comes with an electronic type of igniter. This battery-operated component ignites the flame by creating sparks. When compared to push button and rotary starters, it is undeniable that electronic igniters have an easier operation.

Charcoal grills provide the most authentic barbeque experience and taste, and are typically the least expensive to purchase of all the grills. They will require a fuel of some kind such as charcoal briquettes. They can take some time to get up to temperature and offer less temperature control than electric and gas models. Typically, they are quite portable due to their smaller size, and some models are tabletop or come with a stand.
Electric grills run the middle-of-the-road in terms of cost, and require only a standard electrical outlet to operate. They allow for precise control of heat and are available in tabletop or freestanding models. Some electric grills can even be used indoors, but be sure to check your user manual first.
Gas models are typically the most expensive, but offer more features than charcoal and electric models. They require a fuel source such as natural gas or liquid propane in order to cook foods. They typically heat up fairly quickly, and can often be purchased with grill accessories such as a side burner for cooking with pots and pans. They are available in both tabletop and freestanding varieties.
