green screen Buyer’s Guide
What to Consider For Your Green Screen
Of course, the color of your screen should be green. It is best that the green is a uniform shade that does not contain variations in hue and brightness. A faded color will not help you in your project as there would be dull patches of color that make post-production editing more difficult.
Green vs Blue
The basic idea is that a subject is filmed in front of a uniform blue or green screen. The reason the screens are blue or green is because both colours are far away from skin tones, making it easier to replace the background without fear of accidentally removing a part of the actor’s face.
Green screens are more prevalent at the moment, largely thanks to the fact that the sensors on today’s digital cameras are more sensitive to green than any other colour. Green also requires less light to properly illuminate.
That said, blue screens still get a lot of usage, especially if the subject being shot needs to wear a green costume.
The best example of the benefits of both blue and green screens is the original Sam Raimi Spider-man film, where Spider-man was filmed in front of a green screen while his nemesis, Green Goblin, was filmed in front of a blue one.
If they had filmed the other way around, the blue parts of Spidey’s costume would have disappeared on the blue screen, and the Goblin’s green costume washed out on a green screen.
How it works
The process of chroma key compositing is rather simple in the era of computer editing. Software simply checks the colours in the video and if it matches the chroma key colour (or a range of similar colours), then it will replace that part of the video with an alternate background.
In fact, pretty much all video editing software these days comes with a way to simply achieve chroma key compositing, making the editing part the easiest part of the process.
The challenge for budding videographers comes when you’re filming, and ensuring you reduce the chance of errors while recording your video.
If you want to try your hand at chroma key compositing, here are some essential tips to keep in mind while filming.
Tips for recording with a green screen
The first thing you have to avoid is shadows. The reason is obvious when you think about it – shadows change the perceived colour by the camera, which means the green screen won’t be properly replaced in editing. When you’re shooting a close up, head and shoulders shot, this is fairly easy to avoid, but when shooting a full body action shot, you’ll need to spend a fair amount of time ensuring shadows are kept to a minimum.
Lighting is always important for video. But it’s even more important when shooting for chroma key compositing. You need to ensure both the green screen and the subject are perfectly lit, without creating shadows.
Ensure the screen surface is flat and smooth. You can use a wide number of surfaces, from paint to fabric to paper, but no matter which you opt for, you really need to make sure there are no wrinkles or folds that could impact the appearance of a seamless single colour background.
If your camera automatically sharpens your image, turn that feature off. This artificial sharpening may help your subject look better in natural shots, but in chroma key instances it actually makes it harder for software to separate the subject from the background.
Watch out for reflections, both on your subject and on props. Shiny things like glasses or metal that reflect the light could pick up the colours of the green screen, making it more difficult to key correctly. Also watch for blonde hair, which can struggle on a green screen – either use a blue screen, or throw a magenta gel on the backlight to counteract the green.
LimoStudio Photo Video Studio Light Kit
LimoStudio was founded in 1990 and has grown to be a leading force in the industry of advanced photo/video equipment. Perhaps the main reason for their success is due to their top quality photo studio equipment that comes with a very affordable price tag. LimoStudio makes a wide range of products dedicated to personal and commercial photography and videography applications. One that stands out, in particular, is their green screen background kit which has pretty much everything that an aspiring professional could ask for.
The kit contains two photo video studio light stands with adjustable height the minimum being 53” and the maximum 100”. For light safety, LimoStudio designed a special Solid Locking System which is very useful. There are also two heavy duty light stands which have adjustable height and a powerful softbox reflector. The 24” softbox reflector with light holder is made of top quality nylon and it’s intelligently designed to minimize light loss and maximize light spread. Two 33” studio white umbrella lighting reflectors are provided which come with an adjustable light head for the best light stream to your object.
The set is sturdy all-around and quite easy to assemble as this kit by LimoStudio is an excellent choice for beginners. There is plenty of lighting for your shots and the quality of the materials is satisfying enough. One thing some people might not appreciate is the material of the backdrops. As they’re made of fabric they need to be ironed to get rid of the wrinkles.
Despite this small shortcoming, I definitely recommend this product because it contains all the tools that any photographer or video maker needs to take their creations to the next level.

Linco made a robust backdrop stand support system with a 7inches high drop stand with a bigger and safer footprint and a 7inches wide Crossbar Support in three sections connected by single action locks that can be adjusted.

Considering the quality of the materials and such, the kit works efficiently as it will help you get shots exactly how you want them. If we are taking into account the price of this set which is quite low, then this kit is perfect for starters although advanced users should probably look towards the more expensive models. The quality of the light bulbs is not outstanding but is on par with what you pay for. All things considered, this kit can supply everything you need to get you able to significantly improve your photography and video shoots.
Fancierstudio Lighting Kit Point Lighting Kit

One part where every beginner might struggle with is setting up the kit correctly according to your lighting needs. This can be done quite easily with this kit. The green screen structure has the advantage of being simple to manipulate and adjust to a larger or smaller size depending on how you prefer it. Because there are no perfect kits, this one can also have some problems, mostly regarding the flimsy build construction, but still, I think this kit deserves a place in this list because it’s all around a very balanced option.
Guest Post How Tos Video Production
Today’s guest post comes from Ben Hancock of Aletalk Productions, a London-based corporate video production studio.
The limits of green screening are almost endless, and grant filmmakers on all budgets the ability to create impressive digital effects within their videos. Its versatility and the resulting post-production freedom mean that with a carefully planned green screen shoot, you can open up the door to an infinite number of editing possibilities. It also provides you with a fully controllable environment for shoots, allowing you to avoid common issues like background noise, natural lighting, and a whole host of other uncontrollable factors that go hand-in-hand with location shoots.
I’ve compiled what I feel are the four essential tips to ensure that you get a professional green screen result in all your future video production projects, and avoid having to spend endless hours in post-production correcting issues that are easily avoidable during the production stage! Read on for my top tips to getting green screens right.
Lighting the Green Screen
Make sure that you light the screen evenly – the aim is to make the screen the same gradient of green across the entire screen. This means no hot spots (overexposed areas) or shadows. The easiest way to achieve this is to set up two lights, one on either side of the screen, and position them a good distance from the screen. This will cast an even light over the whole background, and avoid getting an overexposed spot in the center of the lit area.
Most people don’t take into consideration the actual mechanics of shooting the green screen background photograph. The reality is that the most important part of it all is the lighting. Without lighting the set well, your composition will look really nasty. Let’s start with the basics, though. As with most staged photos, you’ll light your subject and your background. This provides an even tone throughout the area you are shooting in.
When lighting the background of most images in normal photography, a shooter may decide to use various techniques to “paint” with light and create interesting shadows or patterns. On the contrary, you don’t want to do that at all with green screen photography.
Read More ) and removing it from the image, this helps separate your foreground subject from the green screen background. Speaking of the foreground subject, it’s important to make sure they are lit better than the background.
As an added note, it is ideal to have the subject far away from the green screen (ten feet should work). This prevents any possible shadows, and it’s also why you see studios that use big green screens. Most people tend to have this idea that talent is always right up against the green screen – wrong. Even with the tiny, portable green screens it’s possible to stay at a distance. By creating a garbage matte around the area your model is in, you can use a little screen for a big picture.
I’d say that the easiest, most automatic tool one can use for background removal is the magic wand. Essentially, this tells the application to remember the color value of the pixel that you have clicked and then to select pixels with similar hues that are nearby. The magic wand will also select similar connecting pixels, and this helps when selecting giant chunks of green. Even so, the handy non-physical, semi-magical apparatus isn’t perfect. Sometimes it will select pixels you wouldn’t want to it to touch, and in such situations, the tool is ultimately rendered useless.
Both extras do exactly the same thing as the lasso. However, there are some slight differences. For instance, the polygonal lasso will create perfectly straight lines from point to point. On the other hand, the magnetic lasso clings to what Photoshop considers to be the edge of your selected image. Both tools add automatic functions to a highly-manual tool, and as with the case of the magic wand, there is certainly room for error.

Gift Buying Guide: Practical Gifts Teachers Will Love
While “green screen,” “blue screen,” and “chroma key” are synonymous, any color will work. These colors are used most often because they don’t resemble natural skin tone or hair color, meaning no part of an actor will be edited out.
Setting and Set Up
Choosing the location to place your green screen is important. Find a large space that will fit your backdrop like a studio, garage, or even outdoors. Make sure there’s room for film equipment like cameras and lights as well. Green screens made with stretch fabric are ideal for shooting in all environments due to a taut surface that will stay smooth, even in windy conditions. Place your chroma key fixture on a flat, stable surface to prevent it from falling over while filming.
If shooting the actor down to their feet, consider using green flooring for full coverage. A drape that matches the color of the screen is enough for an easy chroma-key process.
Next, secure the backdrop. Consider using weights or sandbags to the feet of the frame or on the sides of your green cloth. This will keep the green screen in the perfect position that you can base the rest of your equipment on.
If you need a background setting, you can find entire catalogs of proprietary footage from services like Shutterstock, Video Blocks, and Envato Market. This is almost never offered for free, so consider filming your own background footage if you’re on a tight budget.
Lighting the Screen
When using a green screen, it’s important to use strong lighting to create a solid color on the backdrop. Creating a consistent shade of green is important because it will make processing chroma key effects much easier. Use illumination from the sides and top where they’ll be out of the shot. Green screens made with stretch fabric are taut and don’t have wrinkles that can cause shadows. If using a DIY cloth, aim to get your surface as smooth as possible using as many clips and fasteners as necessary.
Lighting the Subject
Reduce shadows cast by actors by using overhead lighting or have them stand a distance from the screen if you need to use standing lights. Separate your subject from the background, giving them a distance of a few feet. This stops a green edge caused by the actor’s shadows, an unintended effect commonly referred to as “color spill”. Make sure they’re not wearing anything close to bright green or they’ll disappear into the background! Alternatively, if using a blue cloth, tick that hue off of your color options for your outfit that day.
Remember to match the lighting on your subject with the lighting in the scene. For example, if your actor is supposed to be on the beach at sunset, use an orange or yellow, front facing light pointed at the subject from the side to create a more true-to-life sunlit effect. Remember to position your lighting to line up realistically with your background footage. If the scene’s setting is indoors, overhead white lighting is more appropriate.
Position Your Actors and Cameras
Direct your subject to stand away from the screen, but far enough back that their feet will be surrounded by green flooring. The best position is near the horizontal center, giving the actor enough room to move without a part of their body leaving the color backdrop.
Film a Test Shot
It’s time to find out how your shot will look! Once you’ve adjusted your lights to perfection, start recording a test shot. Bring this to your video editing software and use your chroma-keying effect to see how it looks with your background footage. If your lighting doesn’t match the scene, adjust or switch out your lights. If you notice “color spill” around your subject, have them stand further from the backdrop.
