measure tape Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy measure tape, right? No!

How To Use A Laser Distance Measure

To make a simple distance measurement using a laser measure the user must place the instrument at one end of the line that is to be measured and aim the laser beam at a solid target such as a wall or cabinet.

If a solid object is not available then a plastic target can be placed at the required destination to allow the laser beam to be reflected.

Next, the button is pressed and the distance is measured and displayed on the laser measure’s screen.

If a simple distance was all that was required then the job is already done but a whole range of options still exist for the user.

Areas and volumes can be calculated by taking further measurements and making use of the on-board functions to perform the calculations for you.

Each model is different so it is always advisable to spend some time with the user manual before attempting some of the more advanced tasks.

There are many different laser distance measures available for use and so there is a lot to consider when trying to choose the right one for you. So, what laser measure is right for you? Here are some things to consider: – Laser distance measures can range in price from £9- £59so what you are willing to spend is an important factor to consider.

Indoor/Outdoor Use – Do you need to have a laser measure that can be used for indoor and outdoor measuring? Some laser measures, such as the Leica DISTO D510, can do this. However, other measures will only be suitable for one or the other.

Distance Measurement – What will you be measuring? Laser distance measures can vary on the distance they can measure over. Some will measure up to 60m whereas other can go as far as 200m.

Waterproof – Will you need a laser distance meter that is waterproof? You might want to consider measures such as the Leica DISTO X310.

The 201Leica DISTO™ bluetooth D1laser measure is sure to revolutionise measuring.

Target Plate –

Target plates are an essential accessory for Laser distance measures when measuring large distances. They provide a reflecting target which helps to provide a precise measurement. There are multiple types of target plates, some can be fixed to corners, edges or on floor marks.

Soft Bag –

It can be handy to have a convenient carry bag for your equipment to not only keep it safe but keep everything together. Try our Leica GVP50DISTO Soft bag which does just that and has pockets for all relevant manuals, CD’s, cables and other equipment.

Bra Sizing

Bras are sized using a unique system based on two measurements of the bust area. For detailed instructions on how to measure to determine bra size and get a correct fit, please see: How to Measure for a Bra.

This measurement is used for tops, dresses, and bottoms.

This measurement is used for bottoms and sometimes for dresses.

Stand with your hips together and measure the fullest part of your hips. Be sure to go over your buttocks as well. It might be challenging to keep the tape consistently level when you do it alone; it is recommended that you have a friend assist you with this or that you do it in front of a mirror.

How Measurements Correspond to Sizes

Having your measurements ensures that you will know the best size to get for your clothes. It is an easy way to take much of the risk out of online shopping, and can be helpful if you’re looking at doing alterations to your clothes as well.

Doug Mahoney

After dropping, extending, and scrubbing the blades of 1different tape measures with 60-grit sandpaper, we found that the best one is the classic 25-foot Stanley PowerLock Tape Measure. It’s our pick after 4hours of research and three annual updates to this guide, including another 1hours of work this year testing against new tools. That’s because the PowerLock delivers the best basic combination of durability, ease of use, and accuracy—and all for a very low price. In fact, the PowerLock is one of the least expensive tape measures that we’ve looked at.

How we picked

DeBoer and Clement agreed that a tape measure that can stand out unsupported for 7-feet is more than enough for at-home use.

Installation

Electric dryers require a dedicated 240-volt circuit, which almost every laundry room will have. Gas dryers, on the other hand, require a separate gas hookup, and laundry rooms are a little less likely to have one of these. If yours doesn’t and you decide to buy a gas dryer, you’ll need to factor in the cost of having a gas line professionally installed. Be aware that this can cost upward of several hundred dollars — in many cases, this can outweigh the long-term energy bill savings, or at least render them negligible. And even if you already have a gas line ready to go, you still might be wise to have your new gas dryer installed by a trusted professional. The consequences of a faulty installation can include fire, carbon-monoxide poisoning or even an explosion.

Choosing the right size dryer

If you’re buying a matching washer-dryer set, then this is a rather painless process. No matter what size set you go with, you’ll be able to use your new machines together without any trouble. The confusing part comes when you’re buying a stand-alone dryer to complement an existing washer. Go too small, and you won’t be able to dry a full washer load in one cycle. Go too big, and you’ll burn away your money with every cycle.

Plan ahead

When buying your dryer, don’t just think about the capacity of the washer you have right now. Think about the capacity of your next washer, especially if your current one is already more than six or seven years old. The last thing you want is to have to replace your dryer yet again when the new washer gets installed.

And while we’re talking about looking to the future, are you planning on starting a family anytime soon? If so, you’d be wise to plan on a bigger laundry load, too.

Break out the measuring tape

Settled on a size? Good. Now it’s time to make sure that it’ll fit in your laundry room. Measure your space, making sure to add at least three inches on each side for heat clearance and pipes/wiring in the back. Most full-size dryers are less than 30 inches wide, somewhere between 2to 3inches deep, and anywhere from 3to 4inches tall. If you can comfortably accommodate those margins, then you’re in good shape.

While you’ve got that measuring tape out, it’d be a good idea to check your vent distance. Measure a path along the wall from the dryer’s location to the spot where hot air will be vented outside of the house. Add eight feet for every turn you have to make. Ideally, you want a total distance of less than 60 feet. Anything longer than that, and the heat won’t be able to make it to the outside of your home — a major safety hazard that could ultimately cause a fire.

Whirlpool

Twin Wash, takes this concept to next level. The washer sits on a platform that’s actually a special washing chamber separate from the machine’s main drum.

Choosing the right controls and features

Most dryers still use a dial of some sort to select the cycle, along with a start/stop button. The number of preset cycles will vary from unit to unit, but the chances are good that you’ll have a few options to choose from, along with more precise timed drying settings. More and more units these days are boasting some sort of digital display. These often make for a fancy, space-age looking dryer, but if they don’t offer any additional functionality, they can also just serve as an easy excuse for the seller to charge a little more.

Many dryers also come with a delayed start mode, which will allow you to load the machine, set a timer, and delay the start of the cycle until the timer reaches zero. This can be a great way of running the machine late at night or early in the morning, when power rates are often significantly lower. It can also be a great way of ensuring that you have toasty, fresh-from-the-dryer clothing to wear on frigid winter mornings.

One other basic feature to think about is the hinge. Do you want your dryer door to open on the left or on the right? Almost all models will allow you to choose. We recommend placing the hinge on the side opposite your washer. That way, the door won’t be in your way when transferring damp clothing from the washer into the dryer.

GTD45EASJWS which both come with a minimum of features and mechanical controls at a rock-bottom price.

Going green

Dryers typically account for more than percent of household power consumption. If you’re truly concerned with minimizing your eco footprint, then you might want to consider selling your current machine rather than buying a new one. After all, clotheslines and drying racks work perfectly well, and they do so without using so much as a watt of electricity.

That said, if you’re looking for less extreme ways of making laundry day more energy efficient, you’re in luck. As you shop for a modern dryer, you’ll be bound to come across green features capable of reducing your energy consumption, as well as your monthly power bill. In addition to thinking about getting a gas dryer, consider models that come with moisture sensors built into the drum. These sensors detect when your clothes are dry, then tell the dryer to go ahead and shut down, preventing over-drying and also saving energy. You can also look for units with dual-temperature heating elements — these are usually capable of heating and cooling the dryer much more efficiently. Usage tracking functions such as GE’s eMonitor catalog the efficiency rating of each load, then let you review the information on an electronic readout to help you learn how to use your dryer more efficiently.

Trying to be more energy efficient? GE’s eMonitor can help you learn how.

Remote controls

Most smart dryers come with remote alerts that will notify you with a text when the cycle is complete, meaning no more constant runs down to the basement to see if your clothes are ready to come out yet. Some take it a step further, offering smartphone controls that allow you to check the real-time status of a load, start or stop the dryer remotely, or even change the drying cycle.

Google Home

GE’s Geneva skill lets you ask Alexa about your dryer’s status by saying, “Alexa, ask Geneva if my clothes are dry.” Additionally you can say, “Alexa, tell Geneva to keep tumbling,” and the assistant will command compatible GE dryers to spin your laundry items a little longer.

Nest thermostats (a Google-owned company) to avoid running during peak energy hours. Likewise, connected GE ovens will send alerts your way if they’re on but Nest thermostats or Protect smoke alarms think no one is home.

Lizard Skins DSP 3.2mm

You could be forgiven for thinking that bar tape only came in white or black, but it seems Lizard Skins didn’t get the memo as they offer their DSP tape in 1colours and three thicknesses.

Given that this test is about comfort, we selected the thickest, the 3.2mm version. Lizard Skins state that the tape mustn’t be stretched while installing so DSP requires careful wrangling to get true, but once in place, it feels very secure and really grippy, with plenty of cushioning bounce.

By far the most expensive here, it’s hard to say it justifies the cost but it certainly makes a good case for itself.

Kinesis Seasons

You can trust Kinesis to come up with the goods and not get too carried away with bells and whistles and this Season tape certainly falls into that category.

Measuring 3.1mm thick, the tape has a Vex gel backing to further aid the comfort afforded by the polyurethane construction.

Only available in the most practical of bar tape colours, black, it is also free of branding so won’t ‘clash’ with whatever bike or components you run.

The diamond or file pattern offers a great level of grip, and there’s a proper expanding-wedge bar plug to hold everything in place.

Tortec Super Comfort

Constructed from a lightweight EVA foam, Tortec’s Super Comfort does just what it says on the tin and that’s add comfort to your ride.

On the rear is a 0.5mm thick strip of silicone which doubles up as both a vibration reducer and grip to keep it in place.

It also has the benefit of being stretchy to help in the fitting, as well as not leaving any sticky residue, which helps if you need to adjust during installation and down the line when it’s time to replace.

Available in four colour options, the 2.5mm foam is nicely tacky on its outer layer.

Preparation is key

Make sure your hands are clean. Remove the tape from the box. Place the two short strips of tape (to go behind the levers), scissors and electrical tape within reach.

Roll the rubber brake lever hoods forward and carefully remove the old tape. Having exposed the gear and brake cables, ensure they are securely attached to the upper part of the bar using electrical tape.

Any old remains of glue from the previous installation can be removed with alcohol.

Start at the end

Take the first roll of tape and remove the backing strip – taking it off in strips just overcomplicates things later when you’ve lost your third hand.

Poke an inch of tape into the end of the bar. Holding it down with your finger, give it one complete inward twist around the outside of the bar, leaving around 5mm overhanging the end. This will hold the plug in and keep the termination clean.

Wrap under tension

Keeping the tape under even tension, begin winding it around the bars. Each pass should overlap the previous by around 8mm so that the adhesive strip is contacting the bar and not the tape.

As you approach the levers, attach one of the short pieces of tape to the back of the fixing band.

Loop around the shifters

Loop the tape so it partly overlaps the bottom of the lever body before bringing it above the lever and across the short strip of tape so as to also overlap the upper part.

Roll back the rubber hoods. None of the bar or lever body should be visible.

Pro Tips & Tricks

It’s crucial to maintain even tension on the tape while applying it – once fitted, it’s this that keeps the tape in place. How much tension comes with practice – Fizik bar tape is very stiff and requires a lot of tension so it doesn’t crease whereas the Lizard Skin DSP tape is very soft and spongy and they recommend not stretching it.

Bar tape usually comes with matching sticky-backed strips to stop the ends unravelling. Throw these away – pro mechanics always reach for electrical tape instead.

It’s possible to tape the bars without using the strips designed to fill the gaps behind the levers. Wrap the tape in a figure eight up the inside of the lever and over the top before returning to go once around the base before finishing up and across the outside of the lever body.

To lessen the jarring effect of Paris-Roubaix’s famous cobbles, riders frequently wrap their bars with two sets of tape to provide extra cushioning. Many manufacturers now produce extra dense tape to create the same effect.

How to measure for a man

A general corset sizing guideline is as follows: If your natural waist (where you bend side to side) is under 38” select a corset 4-inches smaller than your natural waist. If your natural waist is over 38” select a corset 7-inches smaller than your natural waist.

As a rule of thumb, we have our customers order 4-inches below their natural waist size. So if you have a 29″ waist, you would order a size 2corset.

Other Factors to Consider

New to corseting? Error on the side of too big and work your way into a smaller corset.

Features to Consider

Prior to purchasing consider the various uses for your measuring tool. Are you are simply looking to replace your measuring tape for logging distance, or do you need a device that can perform and store calculations? Measuring tools have advanced functions that can make almost any professional task go a bit faster.

Look for the total range of any single device. If you consistently work in a smaller area or on bigger commercial sites or larger homes, you need a device that has a larger measuring range. You may also need a device with larger memory capacity for complex projects, such as road construction.

Laser Distance Measurer

Laser distance measurers are not only faster and easier to use than linear tape measurer, they are also more accurate. Simply aim the device to your end point and the distance displays on the screen. Many of these devices can also calculate various angles and perform calculations. Some of these quality measuring tools have memory capacity for auto calculations that are common to your projects or profession.

Higher-end models have a much higher range than standard models. For example, a lower-range model can measure distances of up to 20 meters. This standard model should suffice for single unit dwellings, smaller homes or offices. Larger units measure distances of 300 to 800 feet. These are well suited for larger homes and commercial projects. Road workers require distance measurers with longer ranges, and should also look for models that have Bluetooth functionality.

There is also precision to consider. Lower-end models will ensure accuracy up to 1/inch. For general measurements and estimates, this is sufficient. For jobs where finite accuracy is crucial, such laying pipe, grading and pouring a foundation or grading for a road, look for a model that guarantees accuracy of 1.0 mm or less.

Multi-Angle Measurement

One of the primary advantages of how laser measuring tools function is their multi-angle capability. Simply mount a multi-angle laser to a tripod, fasten it to a column or hang it from a wall and allow it to measure multiple angles at once. Many multi-angle lasers also perform multiple calculations for you with the data collected. Depending upon the nature of your work, this could help improve your estimates and overall workflow.

Key Accessories for your Measurement Tool

There are several different types of laser accessories that help make your measurement tool function with greater accuracy. A wall mount is a simple and affordable solution that allows you to mount the laser level to a single spot. This device typically attaches via a clip or a clamp to ceiling trim or a beam. Look for options that include several height adjustments for different types of measuring tools.

Pole systems and rods help elevate the height of the laser level to measure distances either high above or below you. Telescoping rods can adjust to different lengths depending upon the situation. Tension poles secure almost anywhere in the room for convenient and steady 360-degree measuring, or capturing multiple angles. These accessories are easily mounted and taken down without tools or hardware.

The most popular accessory for the professional is the mounting tripod. Most manufacturers offer a line of tripods designed specifically for their larger multi-angle transit levels and surface lasers. They also work with point lasers to hold a steady line for all types of measuring circumstances.

Look for tripods made of heavier and sturdier equipment for outdoor uses, such as roadwork and surveys. These are typically rated for professional construction jobs and are weightier and made of higher-grade materials than lower-end tripods. They may also have a center column that can make smoother and quicker height adjustments and could have a greater overall height allowance.

Electronic and leaser measurement tools provide more accuracy and may be easier to use than their analogue counterparts. Bluetooth functionality helps make calculations on the fly and add data to existing plans. These versatile features can determine how to choose a measuring tool to help your projects go more smoothly and help make on-site estimates more accurate.

Leica Geosystems

The Leica DISTO DNew with Bluetooth offers improved functionality over it’s former glory. Offering many functions like area, volume, two and three point Pythagoras, add/subtract, count-down timer, and intelligent endpiece, the DISTO DNew is a powerful tool in a compact, handheld device. In addition to these great features this unit allows the measurements to be transferred into our free Leica DISTO Sketch app and many other apps through Bluetooth.

DEWALT DW03050 165-Feet Laser Distance Measurer

The DEWALT DW03050 165-feet laser distance measurer has the ability to calculate area and volume, making job estimates quick and easy with automatic calculations. The indirect height measurement uses Pythagoras to measure distances even when point A and/or point B are not accessible for linear measurement.

A memory unit stores the last five measurements and the 2-line backlit display helps improve screen visibility in both dim and bright conditions. This unit has a durable design featuring an over-molded housing and IP6water/debris resistance. The operating range is up to 165ft with accuracy within 1/1of an inch (1.5mm).

Procedure

Prepare the tip of the measuring tape by cutting it into a point, like the tip of an arrow. This will provide easier penetration and routing through insulation. Also, wrap a piece of tape around the end of the measuring tape to prevent it from retracting into the case when you have finished using it.

1) Slide the measuring tape into the junction-box hole.

2) Push the measuring tape up the wall between the drywall and the insulation, above the suspended ceiling.

Bike helmets explained

A bike helmet protects your head from injury if you fall off your bike. A good helmet will provide a balance of coverage, ventilation and comfort. Great strides have been made by designers to improve the comfort level offered by helmets. They come with a variety of padding inserts which help you customise the internal fit and feel of the helmet.

Helmet fit

Having a correct fitting helmet is vital for your safety.  The way to measure your head size for a helmet is by using a measuring tape. Measure approximately 1inch (2.5cm) above your eyebrows (forehead) and around the complete circumference of your head. Ensure the tape measure is a close fit and measure a few times to ensure you get the correct size.

Ladies helmets are available, these tend to be in a different colour scheme to the male version and with a smaller internal measurement. Most size helmets would be considered unisex, so suitable for all. Whereas a uni-size helmet is available in male and female options.

Key features to look for

Safety: Your safety is paramount. In order to cycle on the road or compete in a race it may be a legal requirement in your country to wear a helmet certified to a specific standard or an international equivalent. All helmets sold on Wiggle are certified and labelled with a European CE EN107standard sticker.

Ventilation: The more vents that are on the helmet, the cooler the helmet will keep you. On road bike helmets the ventilation is designed to allow air to pass through the helmet and exit through the rear vents. Whereas on mountain bike helmets, the ventilation is designed to work like a chimney, allowing the hot air to escape vertically.

Straps and retention system: The buckle and chin area of the strap should fit close to the underside of the chin once fastened. However, they should allow you to open your mouth to eat an energy bar or drink water from your bottle. The upper part of the helmet straps will fit you best when it creates a v-shape formed just beneath your ear lobe.  The retention cradle should sit around the occipital bone, the lower region at the back of your skull. The retention cradle adjustment systems can be adjusted very precisely to give a stable fit.

Padding: The padding in a helmet makes wearing one comfortable and also help to absorb sweat. Many helmets have removable padding, this is great as it enables you to wash them and keep them hygienic.

Measuring for Ready Made Curtains

When you measure for curtains, and intend to buy ready made curtains, there are a few things to consider.

Here is a list of the more common sizes available. The first number given is always the width. So curtains that are 117x137cm would have a width of 117cm, and a length of 137cm. Please remember when buying ready made curtains, the sizes given are approximate.
