Choosing the Right Meditation Cushion for You
All natural buckwheat hulls fill the Crystal Cove Meditation Pillow, creating a firm base that still adjusts to your body. The hulls are held by an organic cotton inner liner, making them easy to remove and refill, so you can always keep your pillow fresh.
There are numerous kinds of cushions and mats available for meditation. There are traditional round zafu cushions to square shaped ones, crescent or fortune cookie shaped cushion with various materials and color combinations.
You might also opt for meditation chairs (usually made of wood), meditation benches, foam cushions, yoga mats, or other massage mats for lying positions.

Zafu and Zen Pillow
Zafus are the traditional, round meditation cushion. Our Zafus are filled with organic buckwheat hulls and are about five inches high. For many people the height of our Zafus will be more than sufficient for comfortable sitting.
Our Zen Pillows are similar in height to our Zafus, but rectangular shaped. Whether you choose the Zafu or Zen is a matter of personal preference. Sitting on the wide side of the Zen Pillow will support the tops of your thighs more than the Zafu will. Some people prefer more support, while others prefer that their upper thighs extend off the edge of their cushion. These people will prefer the Zafu. But all in all, the support is very similar between the two of them.
Zen Pillow in Aqua
If you’re thinking of trying a Zafu or Zen Pillow for cross-legged sitting, first try sitting on a 5-inch-high stack of firm blankets. Check where your knees land, and if you find that your knees are at hip bone level or higher, Sukhasana might not be your best meditation position.
The good news is that the Zafu and Zen are adaptable. If cross-legged sitting doesn’t work for you, you can turn your Zafu or Zen Pillow on its side. Place it between your thighs and sit on it with your knees bent, shins on the floor on either side of the cushion.
Our V-Shaped Cushion is similar in height and purpose to the Zafu. But here’s what makes me love the V-Shaped Cushion: Because my hip joints externally rotate like crazy, my legs need more support than traditional cushions can give. The V-Shaped Cushion slants downward so that it supports your entire leg and encourages your pelvis to tilt forward—provided your hips externally rotate as described above.
Whether you decide to use a Zafu, Zen Pillow or V-Shaped Cushion is a matter of personal preference. All of them will work well for a daily sitting practice. Most people find them equally comfortable even for marathon sitting on longer retreats, as long as the cushions allow them to maintain their spinal curves.
As with the Zafus, you can check whether a V-Shaped Cushion is appropriate for you by sitting on a 5-inch stack of firm blankets and observing whether your legs are higher or lower than your pelvis. If your legs can’t rest on the “legs” of the cushion because they are high in the air, the V-Shaped Cushion won’t be comfortable. So, if you can use a Zafu, you will probably also find the V-Shaped Cushion to be comfortable.
One more thing: I’ve now sat many 30-day, 21-day, 18-day and 14-day retreats on my V-Shaped Cushion since I bought it in 1996, and I’ve never regretted it. I also sit on it every day at home and at 1years old, it’s still in perfect condition.
All of Hugger Mugger’s meditation cushions are filled with organic buckwheat hulls. The covers are zippered, so that you can add or subtract filling as you like. Here’s an overview of all the choices.
A Zabuton is like a mini-futon. It’s a wide, rectangular, cotton-filled cushion with a removable cotton cover. Using a Zabuton will make your meditation more comfortable. Ankle bones, feet or knees pressing against a hard floor may feel okay at first, but over time, even 20 to 30 minutes, this can get pretty uncomfortable. A Zabuton is a worthwhile investment if you’re going to commit to a meditation practice. Just place it underneath your cushion to create some extra padding for your ankles and knees.
Yoga for Meditators. In it I devote several chapters to choosing the right sitting support and finding the optimum sitting position.
Medical Wedge Cushions & Seat Wedges
Balanced pelvic tilt – A pelvic tilt wedge cushion is designed to tilt the pelvis correctly, so the spine is in its natural neutral position and to decrease pain in the lower back and legs.
Aligns spine to it’s natural curve – A medical wedge cushion will sure the user’s spine is in its natural, balanced position when seated, with the hips above the knees, relieving abnormal stresses in the lower spine.
Coccyx Cushions & Coccyx Wedge Cushions
Coccyx Wedge Cushions can be used in almost any type of seats at home, in the office, in cars etc.
In addition to relieving pressure on the coccyx a Wedge Shaped Coccyx Cushion will help your spine to maintain it’s natural, balanced ‘S’ shape by tilting your pelvic gently forward to ensure a perfectly balanced posture when seated, and stop the user hunching forward and straining the spine, back and lower lower back.
Medical Cushions with cut-outs
Medical Cushions with cut-outs in differing places are useful when sitting would normally cause pain due to the effects of surgery, including episiotomies; unhealed wounds; haemorrhoids; bruising; coccydinia, etc. Included in this category of Medical Cushions are Coccyx Cushions & Medical Donut Cushions.
As long as humans have laid down to sleep, we’ve used pillows. Nobody has found a caveman pillow, because soft items don’t last for tens of thousands of years. But we do have pillows that have survived from ancient times, from both China and Egypt.
What survives better than soft pillows are the ancient depictions of them. Carvings from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Americas all show royalty seated on cushions. Below is a re-created Roman sitting room.
An ancient pillow tradition we still honor today
Today, the pillow continues as the traditional way to transport wedding rings down the aisle, usually in the shaky hands of the bride or groom’s youngest male relative.
Your basic pillow. The side seams taper into nice, sharp corners.
If your pillow has depth and dimension, you have a box-edge pillow, which doesn’t always have to be “box shaped” as shown above. Usually the edges are defined with contrasting piping to show off the added dimension.
A flange is fabric that extends out from the side seams, usually at least two inches or more. It softens the look of the pillow, and can also be done in a contrasting fabric.
Also known as welting, this is a covered cord that is sewn into the seam as a decorative detail. It’s like an outline for the pillow. Self-piped means the cord is covered in the exact same fabric as the body of the pillow. Contrasting is just that: a different color, pattern or texture to define the edge.
Fairfield has combined numerous types of fiber content and cover fabrics. That’s a real plus, because you want to be able to choose exactly the right kind of insert to match your pillow’s purpose. Another thing we like about Fairfield pillow inserts is that they’re super easy to find. They’re available at the big box stores, national fabric stores, as well as your favorite local quilt shop and online retailers.
Choosing the right insert
Medium-firm support – a great all-around pillow choice for everyday use. They have a 100% polypropylene cover and 100% polyester fiberfill stuffing.
Thanks to a special, fine denier polyester gel fiberfill, these inserts provide a luxurious feel and high-end plushness. The cover is a 100% cotton, 300-thread count jacquard.
Looking for something plush but a little different? Nature-Fil™ inserts are filled with 50% polyester and 50% rayon fiber made from bamboo.
Long-lasting beauty outside, earth-friendly inside. A uniquely soft and silky texture. The cover is 100% cotton and the filler is 100% rayon fiber made from bamboo.
Alternative pillow stuffing
But there are some alternative fillers that people do use for health reasons precisely because they have a beneficial fragrance or other property. Some of these are buckwheat, millet, and even hemp.
So now you know everything you need to know to sew a slew of pillows.
Generally speaking, (but not always) beginner meditators are less flexible and may find sitting cross-legged for lengthy periods of time uncomfortable.
Look for a cushion that offers good elevation as well as padding around the knees and ankles.
This may mean using a combination of two cushions for optimum comfort.
Cushions with quality filling such as kapok will offer ongoing support and won’t flatten over time like cotton, polyester and some types of foam.
For beginners who feel they need more stability, look for cushions filled with buckwheat hull.
These cushions are slightly heavier, but conform to the shape of the user and offer a more stable meditating experience.
Color isn’t a crucial, but for beginners, setting up a peaceful and enticing meditating environment means you’re more likely to meditate on a regular basis.
The cushion can come in a crescent or round shape.
The crescent is 5-inches high, 17-inches wide and the zafu (round) cushion is 5.5-inches high and 15-inches wide.
This meditation cushion is very well made, and Seat of your Soul is so sure of it, they offer a 100% lifetime guarantee on it.
It’s one of the best meditation cushions for beginners to try.
Not all PVC mats are created equally. Some are manufactured without phthalates and other toxins. However there are no PVC mats that are biodegradable.
Newer more eco-friendly options include recycled and natural rubber, organic or natural cotton, and jute. Rubber mats are the most popular eco-friendly option, but you should avoid rubber if you’re allergic to latex.
Cotton is the most absorbent mat material, which is important if you sweat a lot or plan to practice hot yoga. Cotton mats tend to cost a bit more, but are also available in a more affordable rug style. Jute mats feature an organic surface texture which prevents slippage naturally.
Our round zafu cushions are made from exceptionally soft 100% cotton twill fabric and filled with buckwheat hulls. Zafus have been used for everyday sitting in Asia for centuries. Today the zafu is rediscovered by Westerners for meditation, yoga, and a simple home furnishing.
The zafu is perfect for sitting meditation and pranayama practice. Sitting in elevated “easy pose” (cross-legged) creates a pelvic tilt, bringing length and alignment to the spine. It is also great for stretching the back, and converts almost any chair into a tilt seat for autonomous sitting.
All zafus are filled almost to capacity for support, but with just enough room for pliability. They have a zippered opening and an inner pillow which allows you to add or remove the buckwheat hull stuffing for adjusting to your individual height/density.

Steer clear of high-traffic areas or those where distractions are likely to pull you off the path to Nirvana. Try to avoid the kitchen, the living room or anywhere too close to a lavatory, the front door or a space that faces a street. Your home office may drag your mind toward work, and a place that makes you want to nap rather than meditate (like your bedroom) might be a little relaxing.
Candles. A plush area rug or tatami mat on top of carpet can carve out a private space where you can meditate, practice yoga or rest without costing you a fortune.
