model kits Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy model kits, right? No!

Garmin Edge 20

Here we have the most basic Garmin Edge. It’s the essence of GPS cycling devices, distilled into a tiny unit barely bigger than the Garmin quarter-turn mount it sits on. It’s a no-frills bike computer that’ll accurately and reliably track your speed, distance and time. It lacks ANT+ and Bluetooth, so it won’t support heart rate monitors, power meters or cadence sensors.

Garmin Edge 25

This is the slightly more capable version of Garmin’s two super-minimal bike computers. Launched in 2015, The Edge 2offers little more than the basic metrics you’d expect from a GPS bike computer: distance, speed, elapsed time and time of day, along with average speed, estimated calories, elevation and total ascent.

With the addition of extra external sensors, it will also monitor heart rate and cadence (but not power). When you ride, one page displays the time, date and battery life, while the data is spread across two pages, each with three fields. If you add a heart rate monitor, a fourth page shows beats per minute and HR zone.

Garmin Edge Touring

You can choose between on-road or off-road navigation, using Garmin’s preloaded cycle map of Europe, and you can tell the device to suggest three different round-trip options based on a specified distance. It also includes points of interest relevant to cyclists and allows you to simply enter the address of where you want to go, leaving it to work out a cycling-friendly route for you.

The colour touchscreen is a healthy 2.6in across and offers 160 x 240 pixels resolution — not mind-blowing by modern standards, but usable enough. A nice feature is that the screen darkens between road junctions, to save battery. Speaking of which, battery life is up to a claimed 1hours.

Garmin Edge 820

It also gets a clever feature called GroupTrack, which helps you keep tabs on everyone in your riding pack. It gives you an on-screen map that shows where everyone else in your group is — providing they have a Garmin device that’s compatible with LiveTrack, that is.

Garmin Edge Explore 820

As we’ve already seen, Garmin likes to target touring cyclists with exploration-friendly versions of its bike computers, which is why the Garmin Edge Explore 820 could hit the sweet spot of price and features for many riders. It’s based on the same form factor as the Edge 820, but eschews high-performance data like functional threshold power estimates and Strava Live integration.

You’ll still get Bluetooth Smart to alert you to incoming phone calls and bad weather, and it keeps the incident detection capabilities of the Edge 820. There’s a 2.3in colour touchscreen that works in the wet and with gloves, and the GroupTrack and LiveTrack features remain too, which some might find useful. It’ll connect to a heart rate monitor as well.

Most potential buyers will be asking if the navigation features are any good and it’s the same story as reported above for the Edge 820. The good news is that it’ll create a route for you on the fly and delivers turn-by-turn navigation with alerts as appropriate. The bad news is that it’s still limited by screen size — just too small for many users, who’ll soon tire of trying to zoom in and out by poking at elusive on-screen icons.

Garmin Edge 1000

Until the Edge 1030 was announced in late 2017, the 1000 was the premium Garmin Edge bike computer. It has a slew of features: turn-by-turn navigation on a huge 3in colour touchscreen that automatically adjusts for light conditions, data tracking for a vast array of rider performance metrics, workout and Virtual Partner features, Strava Live integration and lots more. It comes at a hefty price, though.

Garmin Edge 1030

This 123g handlebar supercomputer monitors and records every cycling metric you can think of, plus a few dozen more.

Garmin upped the ante on navigation, too, offering something it calls ‘Trendline Popularity’ to highlight cycling-friendly routes when out on the road. We haven’t tested this enough yet to confirm its promise, but a cool promise it is.

It’s a big misconception that it is expensive to start with 3D printing. When you have a tight budget, cheap DIY 3D printer kits can be a great starting point. Why DIY kits still exist mainly has to do with saving costs, because the components can be packed and shipped more efficiently.

Basic skills you need to get started

That said, nowadays, assembling a kit comes down to connecting a few parts with screws and cables. Most of the time, all the hard work is done in the factory. So no soldering or drilling is required. The assembly time of cheap 3D printer kits ranges between and 1hours, depending of the level of knowledge of the user.

Materials used for the frame

It may appear that these kits all consist of the same materials, but please keep in mind that when assembled, look at things like the rigidity and weight of the 3D printer kit itself.

3D printers have quite a few moving parts and can shake quite a bit, especially at higher speed prints. Therefore you need a little weight to keep your machine into place and not find it vibrating itself off the table and onto the floor.

You must also be cognisant of a flimsy frame as this could lead to distorted and skewed prints. For this reason I prefer solid heavy frames made of wood, metal or melamine. With that in mind some cheap 3D printer kits will use a metal frame but is so thin that it really provide nothing in terms of rigidity. A good metal frame that is considered tough will range from 3.0mm to 6.5mm in thickness.

Moisture free filaments

Certain filament materials such as PLA easily absorb moisture from the atmosphere. It is this absorption that can cause problems such as effecting print quality and cause damage your hot-end through blockage.

Hot-End Damage: Moisture absorption causes filament swell. If the swelling is sufficient enough, the plastic will simply block up the nozzle and may cause permanent hot-end damage.

Solution: To combat filament moisture absorption and serious damage to your new equipment, one inexpensive solution is to buy vacuum bags. Place your filament spool in the bag, throw a couple of silica gel packs and suck all the air out.

Dust free filaments

So this brings me to my next point, support. Support comes in many shapes and forms. Does the company deliver one-on-one customer support with a helpdesk employee via mail or phone? Do they have a forum, a Google or Facebook group where the community helps out each other? All of these can be very helpful tools in the event you get stuck on something whether it be the 3D printer or the print outcome itself. In addition this can also be a great way to get involved in the community itself and some day you may be helping someone else with a problem you overcame.

All in all I recommend first consulting customer reviews. Hands on usage from the public and real users is the best way to cut through all the marketing hype and it is the best way to gauge the quality and function of a product before committing your money.

Choosing The Right Airbrush Makeup Kit

For a flawless complexion, nothing beats airbrush makeup.

Professional makeup artists have used this technique for ages, but as hi-def images become more commonplace, everyday beauty buffs are looking to get in on the action.

Is Airbrush Makeup better than traditional Makeup

There are advantages to both types of makeup application. Both can be used to create an even, flaw-free complexion. But if you’re looking for lightweight coverage, nothing beats airbrush technology.

When you use traditional makeup, it means that you’re using conventional coverage products. This typically refers to concealer, foundation, and setting powder. These products can be applied with brushes, sponges, or fingers.

Traditional makeup can be used to create an even finish, but it tends to have a thick consistency. Because it often has to be layered, it can take awhile to achieve optimal results. Due to the widespread use of traditional cosmetics, however, there are many available color options. Women with unusual skin tones may have an easier time finding traditional foundation that matches the pigment of their skin.

Airbrush makeup, on the other hand, requires a number of tools. This includes the airbrush gun and an air compressor. These must be used in tandem with a special airbrush foundation. Because the foundation is applied via gun, it has to have a very thin consistency. It goes on like a mist, covering the face in a thin layer of pigment. This creates a natural looking complexion. People who feel weighed down by traditional makeup application may prefer airbrush makeup, as it is much lighter than regular foundation.

Airbrush Compressor

When choosing a compressor, pressure is important. Check to see that the PSI, or pounds per square inch, meets cosmetic guidelines. This metric controls the way the pigment is projected, and smaller PSIs are recommended for the detailed work needed for makeup applications.

The Airbrush Foundation

There are three main types of airbrush foundation. To choose the best foundation for your needs, it’s important to understand the differences.

Alcohol-based airbrush makeup is used infrequently, but it’s known for its impressive staying power. This type of airbrush makeup can last for up to five days. Because it is made primarily of alcohol, however, it’s not suitable for daily wear. It is also known for staying true to color, no matter how long it stays on the skin.

Silicone-based airbrush make up is more popular than alcohol-based alternatives. This type of airbrush makeup blends in impeccably with skin. It also stays over long periods of time. When makeup is applied to the skin, the skin reacts to the cosmetic intruder by producing moisture. Because of the silicones, however, the skin is incapable of breaking down this type of makeup. No matter what, it doesn’t dissolve. This type of makeup does have a tendency to darken after application, so it’s best to choose a shade lighter than your actual skin tone.

Water-based foundatio n – This produces a matte finish, which makes it camera-ready. It’s a popular choice for news anchors and other television personalities. Because it is water-based, however, it does react to the moisture produced by the skin, like oil and sweat. Also, because it provides a matte finish distinct from natural skin texture, it needs to be applied all over the face. If it isn’t, there will be a noticeable demarcation between the natural skin and the airbrush foundation. This type of makeup tends to darken after application, so wearers are often advised to experiment with various shades before settling on one match.

When applied properly, airbrush foundation should feel extremely lightweight. If it feels heavy on the skin, it means you’ve applied the makeup with too heavy a hand. To ensure correct coverage, don’t pull all the way back on the trigger while applying.

Makeup lovers new to the art of airbrush may also be tempted to mix formulas. This is a recipe for disaster. Because the various airbrush formulations dry at different rates, combining creates a streaky mess rather than an even complexion.

Other items included in kit

While the airbrush, the compressor, and the makeup are the main components of the airbrush experience, there are other items that can enhance the process.

You can augment an airbrushed complexion with airbrush highlighter, blush, bronzer, and shimmer. These products are also lightweight, and they can add incredible dimension to the face.

Blush and bronzer can be used to contour the cheeks, and highlighter and shimmer can be used to provide a dewy sheen along the cheekbones and brow.

Tickled Pink Airbrush Kit

This popular airbrush makeup kit uses water-based makeup to provide even, poreless coverage. The makeup is even infused with aloe juice to ensure the perfect finish.

Each kit comes with three shades of foundation, which enables each user to mix and match to create the correct pigment. The kit also includes a professional-grade airbrush, and airbrush holder, an air hose, and a small compressor.

Designed for at home use, this kit has the power of a professional kit but is rendered in a convenient size. The compressor also has three settings, which gives the user greater control over air pressure and application.

All of these parts are stored in a chic case embellished with a pink stripe. The Tickled Pink Airbrush Kit is a great starter package for makeup aficionados interested in airbrush foundation.

Belloccio Professional Airbrush Makeup System

This airbrush system is easy to use and highly effective.

It comes with a water-based foundation that is packed with antioxidants and moisturizers. This gives all skin types a healthy, natural-looking glow.

To ensure that all users learn to apply airbrush foundation effectively, the kit comes with a DVD that goes over setup, airbrushing technique, and more.

There are many components to the Belloccio Airbrush System. There is the mini compressor, which has three airflow control settings, and the gravity feed airbrush, which enhances accuracy.

The kit also comes with four foundation shades and a moisturizing primer that can be used before or after the makeup application. There is also a blush, shimmer, and bronzer set, which helps users accentuate their natural features.

Belloccio also includes three bonus products. The concealer can hide dark circles and blemishes, and the makeup blending sponge is great for blending powders and creams. There is also an airbrush finishing spray, which is the perfect way to set your makeup.

Dinair Airbrush Makeup Kit Personal Pro

The Dinair kit is perfect for makeup artists who want to create glamorous looks. The all-speeds air compressor and CX Beauty airbrush combine to create impeccable coverage.

The kit also comes with four foundation shades and five bonus colors. These pigments include an eyeliner product, a blush, a brow pigment, and a shimmer.

This kit can also be used for self tanning purposes, and it comes stocked with a facial tanner.

The Dinair Moist and Dewy Moisturizer keeps the skin hydrated all day long, and the Dinair Corrective Concealer is the perfect way to hide imperfections.

Size and Scale

Gundam models, like most other plastic models have an accompanying original to model ratio, or scale. A 1/100 kit would be roughly 100 times smaller than actual size of the object the kit represents. A 1/60 scale kit would only be 60 times smaller resulting in a larger model.

Grade & Size

Kits released by Bandai are generally categorized based on their size and level of complexity. Kits within a category usually share the same scale although exceptions are sometimes made for units of odd sizes. For example the Musha Gundam, in its universe, is considerably larger than its Gundam brothers. However for the sake of simplicity Bandai scaled it down to use the 1/100 MKII frame. The upside to this discrepancy that kits within the same scale tend to be pretty similar in height and size except for a few which are substantially smaller or larger. Together these consistencies make it easier for fans to purchase a kit with accurate expectations regarding the difficulty and end result.

No Grade

While not technically a stated grade, No Grade generally refers to 1/100 and 1/14kits that haven’t been released to the specifications of High or Master Grade. The cheapest of the kits, no grade models feature the simplest engineering and details. They often require a good amount of painting and touch ups to look their best. Within the last decade the quality of no grade kits has jumped tremendously and modern releases are on par with older High Grade kits.

Real Grade

Real Grade kits are a newer line from Bandai, released following their 30th anniversary. They bridge the gap between High Grade and Master Grade while retaining the 1/14scale. They’re highly poseable, highly detailed, and come molded in all of the appropriate colors. Almost no painting is required for a fantastic looking kit. Unfortunately the complex designs often leave the kits feeling more fragile than other grades and that complexity makes them better suited for experienced builders.

Master Grade

Master Grade are a step up in size and quality. At 1/100 scale they are often cast and engineered to look great without painting. Unlike HGs, most feature internal skeletons with large amounts of detail. They’re also more expensive thanks in part to the additional gimmicks not found with their smaller brethren. For example, some kits have individual articulating fingers or the ability to transform. For the most part, skill requirements between HG and MG kits are rather minor. MG kits just take a bit more time and patience to build.

For modelers not looking to paint, Master Grade kits are a great choice as more pieces are molded in their correct colour already. Over the years some kits have received second and third variation releases to take advantage of the improving technologies. v2.0 kits have been re-engineered from the ground up and are considerable improvements over their earlier counterparts. Many MG kits also have the additional title, “Ver. Ka,” having been designed and stylized by Gundam designer Hajime Katoki.

Perfect Grade

Perfect Grade kits are Bandai’s top of the line kits. They’re some of the largest, at 1/60 scale, and some of the most expensive. PGs take a lot of time and patience to put together featuring complex and highly detailed construction. The end result is a highly poseable kit with tons of detail. Internal detail is taken to a maximum and many PG kits come with gimmicks not seen on lower levels. PG kits also come with light up eyes and other components, a feature only starting to make its way into some MG releases.

Super Deformed

SD Gundam kits are small, non-scale kits from nearly every series alongside many original designs. They’re quick, easy to build, and mostly inexpensive. There’s very little in the way of pose-ability or articulation as they generally consist of five or so main pieces. Since they’re generally molded in two or three colours SD kits come with large stickers to help detail the kit.

That’s it for the main grades and sizes. Over the years Bandai has released kits in various other scales (such as 1/400 or 1/500) depending on the size of the unit itself. Bandai also has a tendency to re-release kits with extra finishes or clear armor pieces. Most popular are the chrome finishes which adorn popular kits from each grade.

Lesser Known Collections

In addition to the previously listed Bandai released a few kits under the Hard Graph title. These kits are 1/3in scale and are highly detailed, military model style models. Speed Grade kits are the cheapest of the cheap and 1/200 in scale. Bandai only made four.

Several ships and larger mobile armors have been released as 1/400 and 1/550 scale models. Ships on a smaller scale have been released as part of the EX Model line (1/1600 and 1/1700) with smaller units at 1/14and 1/100.

Where to Shop

When it comes to where you should buy a Gunpla model from the simple answer is wherever you can get a good deal. Online, at conventions, or even your own local hobby shop.

Finding a local store which sells Gunpla is a relatively difficult process for folks in the US. Despite its popularity, Gunpla is still a niche market compared to military and vehicle scale models, which have been waning in popularity over the past two decades. The only large scale chain store I know which carries Gunpla is Barns and Noble who’ve had select kits online and in a limited amount of stores.

If you can find and browse Gunpla at local hobby store, please do so. It’s a great way to promote Gundam and support your local shop, whom you’ll likely be visiting again for paint and other supplies. Just be sure to price check because costs and markups can fluctuate quite a bit. Remember to factor in shipping and the convenience of getting it locally. Gunpla distributor, Bluefin Distribution, supplies retailers in the US though not all carry Gundams. You can use Bluefin’s Dealer Locator to see if there are any potential shops near you.

Shipping from Japan

If you order a kit from Japan be prepared to make a choice, SAL or EMS (sometimes a proper shipping company like FedEx). SAL, “Surface Air Lifted,” is your basic international shipping method. Compared to EMS it is incredibly slow, your package could arrive anywhere between two weeks and three months. Base SAL doesn’t have any tracking information but some special versions of SAL do. Unfortunately this isn’t very accurate and has more to do with delivery verification than tracking. SAL is also the slowest going through customs which is where packages spend most of the time sitting around.

EMS is the fastest, and most expensive, shipping method. “Express Mail Service” is, as it says, express. It gets priority access to flight space and through customs. EMS also includes tracking so you can monitor the package’s process.

The FUZE is a different take on the standard Raspberry Pi starter kit. It’s really an enclosure for the Rspberry Pi that pecially built to teach coding to kids the FUZE comes with FUZE BASIC, Python and Scratch, and a selection of Project Cards.

The retro case reminds us of the old microcomputers of the 1980s. Made from sheet aluminium it has its keyboard built in. It shields the Raspberry Pi, protecting it from electronic shorting, static and other physical damage.

Its pins can be programmed to interact with the real world – from receiving analogue sensor inputs to controlling LEDs, joysticks, robotics, motors and more.

You can connect light, heat, movement and sound sensors to interact with the world around you.

An interactive electronics component kit provides jumper wires, resistors, LEDs, micro switches and sensors.

FUZE comes with a deck of 1fun project cards (aimed at key stages one to four) that guide students through the fundamentals of BASIC programming.

The PiHut’s Raspberry Pi Starter kit claims it includes “everything you need to get going right out of the box” but unlike most others featured here it doesn’t come with either a keyboard or mouse.

It does, however, boast 1GB of RAM, and an 8GB Sandisk MicroSD (pre-imaged with the NOOBS operating system).

Silent compressors are very expensive!

On/off switch is very useful when it comes to quiet work environment. They mostly come together with the compressor.

Also, check our glossary of terms in order to get acquainted with the basic parameters that you should pay attention to when choosing the right compressor.

We’ll take a quick look at each of these three components. The battery may be either a rechargeable or disposable type. Most of the best e-cigs today rely on rechargeable batteries. The atomizer is the heating element that vaporizes the e-liquid. An atomizer can be made of any of a number of metals including Kanthal, stainless steel, titanium, or nickel. Most atomizers are Kanthal, an alloy designed to withstand high temperatures.

The e-liquid reservoir is accomplished a number of ways. Some e-cigs use cartridges or pods, which are components that contain the atomizer and e-liquid in one. Some use a vape tank where you manually fill with e-juice as needed.

E-cigarette use is commonly called vaping, due to its vapor output. E-cigarette use has grown globally since its introduction to the market more than a decade ago. Though the first-ever electronic cigarette was patented in 1965, their use was not prominent until Chinese pharmacist Hon Lik’s re-invention in 2003.

Finding the Right E-Cig

The e-cig industry has grown exponentially in a very short period. There are hundreds of companies making hardware and e-liquids. There are US companies and overseas companies. Like any industry, there are contenders and pretenders. Here are a few pointers to help you find the best electronic cigarette for you.

Product Design

The first factor to consider when deciding on buying an electronic cigarette is the design. How big is it? How does it work? Design includes functionality, size, shape, and the overall look and feel of the e-cig. Before making your choice, decide on the importance of convenience vs. performance.

That’s the two basic questions, especially for newer vapers. Again, the big thing is satisfaction. An advanced e-cig can produce more vapor but keep in mind that today’s 2-piece cig-a-like can still deliver a satisfying experience. You don’t need a complex device to enjoy vaping. But you do need good quality.

Long-Term Costs

The long-term costs of using electronic cigarettes are the biggest variable in the value equation. Look at how much replacement cartridges or pods cost. Factor in how much replacement coils cost. A very large part of establishing Vaping Daily’s best e-cig ratings is the value factor. We consider the long-term value in our ranking system. An e-cig that burns through e-juice might offer more vapor, but it can be a waste of money if you’re not into cloud chasing.

Mid-Size E-Cig Mods

Mid-size e-cigarette mods can be either standard or sub ohm. Devices that would fall into this category will typically have larger batteries of 1500 mAh to 2500 mAh. And instead of a cartridge, they will use a vape tank. With a tank system, you manually swap atomizers and refill with e-liquid as needed.

An example would be the VXEO Void. The Void is still small enough to fit in a pocket, yet has enough battery capacity and power for either standard or sub ohm vaping. You can choose your either vaping style with the same device.

Customizable E-Cig Mods

Customizable e-cig mods are devices that allow the user to control the vaping mode and power output. These “vape mods” can range from 30 watts up to 350 watts. The most common type today are dual 18650 battery devices that are capable of about 200 watts of power. These customizable options can enhance the vaping experience, but we recommend beginners to invest in a basic starter kit first.

Using Your E-Cig

The first step to using your e-cig is charging the battery. Many companies send out their products with fully charged batteries, but it is always wise to charge your batteries as a first step. Different manufacturers and models employ several ways to charge them. Most vape pens are charged via a mini- or micro-USB port. Some vape devices have a removable battery that requires a separate charger.

That part was easy and obvious! But after you charge the battery, what next? That question depends on which type of e-cig you are using.

How To Use A Cig-a-like

There are two types of cig-a-like batteries, manual and automatic. The automatic battery will detect when you are taking a puff and automatically activate the atomizer. The manual battery has a small button that you press to fire the atomizer. Beyond that distinction, how to use a cig-a-like is easy.

How To Use A Mod

Make sure you have an appropriate amount of e-liquid in your tank or clearomizer. If you don’t have enough e-liquid for the wick to absorb, you may get a burnt taste from the e-cigarette when you try to vape. Most clearomizers have a line designating how much e-liquid you can fill it with; don’t fill a clearomizer over this line, as it can cause the e-liquid to leak.

A weak flavor and or reduced vapor production is a sign that your coil needs to be replaced. Another sign of a worn coil is a burnt taste when vaping. Coils need to be replaced every one to three weeks on average.

Batteries can also weaken over time. If you are a heavy user, expect your batteries to lose capacity after six months or so. To prolong the life of your e-cigarette batteries, it’s recommended to have at least two in the rotation. Having two will give you something to vape with while the other is charging. It also shortens the charging cycles, which is the main reason why batteries weaken.

Juice Lubes Scrub & Buff Pack

What they say: Our Scrub and Buff pack includes everything you need to get your bike cleaned, lubed, polished and ready for the trail or the road.

This big value gift bundle equates to a 25% saving over buying these items separately.

What we say: Straight off the bat we liked the fact that this kit includes a chain-scrubbing machine.

While this set may not have a bucket or brushes, the hardest part to clean on a bike is undoubtedly the drivetrain, so this little machine makes life a lot easier.

Unlike some chain machines, this one has a small metal arm that clips behind the jockey wheel, leaving your hands free to turn the crank and wipe up any excess liquid as the chain comes through.

Using the big jug of super concentrate ‘dirt juice’ we broke the black grime on our bike’s chain with ease while also mixing some with water to wash the frame and components.

We then used the Viking lube on all our bikes moving parts and finished the job with the bike polish and protector. Which gave it a gorgeous shine that winter will devour.

Muc-Off 8-in-Kit

What they say: The Muc-Off in Bicycle Cleaning Kit is perfect for any lover of bikes.

Complete with our Nano Tech Bike Cleaner, Expanding Microcell Sponge, Soft Washing Brush, Detailing Brush, Claw Brush, Two Prong Brush, Bike Spray and Storage Tub this kit has pretty much everything you need to keep your bike looking nice and tidy.

It makes a great Christmas or Birthday gift for your bicycle obsessed friends and family.

What we say: This is a comprehensive kit including four brushes, a sponge, Muc-Off’s iconic pink Nano-Tech cleaning liquid, a bike protector spray and storage tub-cum-bucket.

After drenching our bike in the excellent Nano-Tech cleaning liquid, we brushed and scrubbed at it before rinsing it down.

The variety of brushes worked well on the frame, including hard to reach areas and the handy claw brush, made a valiant effort at getting excess muck out from between the cogs on the rear cassette.

If this set came with a drive train cleaner as well, we’d be happy to end the contest here but it just misses the mark by the smallest of margins.

All the starter kits mentioned in this list come with the latest and advanced Raspberry Pi Single Board Computer.

A rotary tool’s versatility makes it a valuable addition to any garage workshop, craft room, or office.

In addition to basic repairs around the house, rotary tools are useful for craft endeavors like wood carving, jewelry making, glass engraving, and more. Once you have the basic tool it’s the bits and attachments that really expand your capabilities. A rotary tool is especially valuable when workspace is at a premium because it can do the work of several bulkier tools. Celina Muire, a woodworker from Austin, Texas, told me that she uses her Dremel to do everything from predrilling holes and sanding to cutting nails from recycled palettes. A Wirecutter editor uses his Dremel for tasks ranging from cutting bolts to length to cleaning out an espresso machine boiler. The more you use the tool the more uses you will find for it.

How we picked

Most rotary tools come with a set of bits, similar to a drill-bit kit, with attachments for tasks such as cutting, sanding, drilling, and polishing. But there are plenty of others. The tools are usually offered with various kits of bits at different prices; however, simply choosing the lowest-priced kit isn’t always the best idea and may end up costing you more in the long run if you discover that you want to expand your tool’s capabilities, because the bits and attachments included in these kits can cost more than twice as much to buy individually. We factored in the usefulness of the included accessories when evaluating each kit.

Bits attach to the drill using either a collet (a metal collar with prongs) and collet nut (which tightens over the collet), or a universal chuck, like you’d find on a power drill. Collets come standard with most kits and are the preferred method for certain tasks like routing (hollowing). They come in different sizes, and can be switched out to accommodate bits of different diameters. A universal chuck is usually quicker to use, and you don’t need to switch it out depending on the bit you want to use. The drawback is that a chuck doesn’t grip the bits as securely as the collet system.

In addition to bits, a variety of attachments are available to make tasks easier. Some of the more useful attachments for most beginners are the safety shield (which helps keep debris and sparks contained when cutting or grinding) and the flex shaft (a 36-inch long flexible cord with a thin tip). You grip the flex shaft like a pencil, letting you work more accurately on detailed tasks like engraving and jewelry making. Flex shafts were available for all the models we tested, either included in the kit or as add-ons.

Besides accessories, power was the most important thing to most of the experts we interviewed. Rotary tools rely on speed and not torque for their power. The lack of torque gives the user more control, allowing for more precision, John Hauter of Dremel explained to me. Most of the tools available are in the range of 5,000 to 30,000 rpm, with some offering speeds as high as 35,000 rpm. But most people need only 28,000 to 30,000 rpm for craft or home repair projects.

Rotary tools come in cordless and corded models, but we recommend corded for most people. A majority of the experts we interviewed favored corded models because they have more power and do not require down time for recharging. Still, a cordless tool can be convenient if you’re out of reach of an outlet, so we didn’t rule them out, and if you do prefer a cordless tool, we do have a pick below.

Weight, vibration, and ergonomic design are three factors particularly important for detailed work and projects that require prolonged use. Some of the lower-cost models we tested were twice as heavy (to 3½ pounds vs. to pounds) as pricier models, and had negative user reviews regarding excessive vibration, which can make tasks like engraving and carving a challenge.

We only considered models with variable speed settings. They offer more versatility than single-speed tools.

Using the above criteria, we selected nine tools for testing: five corded and four cordless models.

How we tested

We devised several tests to evaluate each tool’s power, detailing ability, comfort, and handling.

Glass engraving: We used a diamond engraving bit to trace a design taped to the inside of a glass. After outlining the design we used a silicone carbide grinding bit to fill it in. We evaluated a tool’s power by its ability to carve into a hard surface, and its precision by its grip, handling, and the ability to control vibration while creating the design. We also took into account how easy it was to change bits, because this project required us to use bits of different diameters.

Nail cutting: We hammered ¼-inch-thick steel nails into a piece of wood and then used each tool to cut them off as close to the wood as possible. This test judged the tool’s power and ability to cut through metal, the ease with which we could maneuver the tool to cut, and the ability to control it at a high speed.

Polishing: This test was less about power and more about control. We polished silver spoons and removed rust from and sharpened a set of old garden tools to judge how each handled during a longer duration task and its effectiveness for cleaning and polishing.

In addition to these formal tests I also used each of the tools for several hours on different ceramic and jewelry projects, like sanding inconsistencies and excess glaze on the surface of my ceramic pieces after firing. When making the jewelry, I used the tool to grind down castings and to do fine sanding and polishing of rings and pendants.

The Dremel 3000 has the best combination of power, comfort, handling, and price that we found, and it comes with the standard bits most people will need to get started right away. It is lightweight and comfortable to hold thanks to its ergonomic design and soft rubber grip.

The 3000 has a 1.2-amp motor that goes up to 32,000 rpm. Though not as powerful as the speedier Dremel 4000 and Dremel 8220, the 3000 held its own in our test shearing off nails we’d driven into wood. It easily cut through the nails, and because of its smaller size, it was easier to control and maintain a consistent pressure. This consistency also helped to reduce the “skipping” that occurred with several of the models we tried. We’d be happy using it on anything from cutting drywall to removing rust, sharpening garden tools, and removing grout.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

One slight drawback to the 3000 is its limited control over speed. It has five set speeds ranging from 5,000 to 32,000 rpm. The speed settings are numbered through 5, but you’ll have to look in the manual to translate those to rpm ranges. The Dremel 4000, 8220, and both Proxxon models we tested have either a dial or a slide that allows finer-grained, continuous control over speed.

Meccano MeccaSpider
