outdoor trash can Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy outdoor trash can, right? No!

Outdoor Trash Cans

The outside of your business will give your customers their first impressions, so it is important that it be clean. Outdoor commercial trash cans in convenient locations encourage customers to dispose of their trash properly instead of littering.

Commercial outdoor trash containers start at gallons, with the largest models holding as much as 50 gallons. The utility trash cans are usually made out of galvanized steel, while the more decorative models may be made out of see-through mesh, painted steel, fiberglass, or heavy-duty plastic.

Some outdoor trash cans have specialty features such as metal or plastic removable liners, ash tray tops, leveling feet, and sloped sides to catch trash that might otherwise bounce out. Some trash cans also have replaceable panels, so that any damage can be repaired without replacing the whole trash can.

Outdoor trash containers often have special features to make them more able to stand up to the difficulties of being located outside. Some include lids with screws or steel cables to prevent theft, or locks to deter vandals. Some models feature especially heavy construction, bases weighted with sand or water, or include anchoring kits to ensure the trash can stays in place, even through attempted theft or high winds. To prevent fading, some outdoor models have a protective UV coating, or UV inhibitors molded into the plastic. Powder-coated exteriors are durable and weather-resistant.

Indoor Trash Cans

Where your trash container will be located can help you decide what type is best for you.

Brute® trash cans are Rubbermaid’s most popular utility cans, found in countless commercial operations of all types the world over. They range in size from to 9gallons, and are made of heavy-duty polyethylene for durability. These are ideal for use in kitchens, stockrooms, and industrial applications.

Step trash cans are trash containers with a lid that opens when the foot pedal is stepped on. These are popular in restrooms and doctor’s offices, as their hands-free operation prevents the spread of germs.

Decorative trash cans come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes to fit any building’s décor. Some designs include half-round cans, fiberglass cans designed to look like concrete, wood-paneled cans, and cans with messages such as ‘Thank You’ or ‘Come Again’ often seen in quick serve restaurants.

Slim trash cans are designed with a reduced footprint. Some models are made to sit flush against the wall, so they do not extend too far into the room, and others are made to slide into tight spaces. These cans are available with capacities from 1to 3gallons.

Bathroom trash cans are usually made out of stainless steel to prevent corrosion. Wall-mounted units help save space and often serve the dual purpose of dispensing paper towels. A waste chute recessed into a counter gives you the option of putting a trash can under the counter to be out of the way.

Waste baskets are small trash receptacles that are light and meant to be tucked away under desks out of the way. Most are plastic, but some decorative metal models are available.

Mobile Trash Cans

Your trash eventually has to be collected for removal, whether that’s to a dumpster or to the curb for pickup. Wheeled trash cans can make transporting trash easy, and they are available with lids to keep animals and pests out of any trash stored outside.

If you will be transporting a higher volume of trash, a trash cart may work best for you. These do not come with lids, but they are available sold separately for many models. Some trash carts have slanted sides to make tilting easier, but those with straight sides typically have higher capacities. Forklift-compatible trash carts are also available.

Another option for transporting trash cans is a trash can dolly. These are made to fit specific sizes of trash cans and allow you to set the trash can on top of it to roll it around.

It doesn’t have the nearly effortless bag-holding design of our top pick, nor the smooth open-and-close action. But this can has steady balance, a reliable step, a locking lid, and a narrow shape good for small kitchens.

Still, that cost, and the stainless steel finish and the ample size may not work for everybody. For less than half our top pick’s price, Simplehuman’s Slim Step Can gives you some of the same stability and gentle lid-lowering as our pick, but with a shape that works better in small kitchens, and it’s the only can we found with a locking lid. You will have to put in a small amount of effort to get a tight, no-show bag fit, and the lid can potentially be opened too fast, nicking a nearby wall or surface. There are a few crevices you have to work around in cleaning the inside, but none too frustrating. It’s a good can for the price and looks a lot better than those other cans in its price category, too.

The budget pick

Its step is better than most cans at this price level, and its snap-in hinges hold trash bags in place. If you don’t need good looks, or an airtight, dog-proof can, this wastebasket won’t disappoint.

We previously recommended the Hefty Touch Lid 13.Gallon Trash Can as our budget option, and as a non-foot-pedal alternative. We’ve changed our thinking; most people want to avoid touching any part of a trash can with their hands, especially around its lid. Some homes do better with a small under-sink trash can, for which we have a recommendation.

Also new for this 201update, we tested sensor cans—and found that they created more annoyances in holding and replacing trash bags than they solved with their not-at-all-perfect automatic lids.

How we picked

Our criteria for a great trash can has changed since we first picked and tested trash cans in mid-201We realized, after a year of using our trash can picks, that beyond the functions of the trash can itself, perhaps even more important is how your trash can works with your trash bag.

That is, after all, a trash can’s primary job: to collect trash, to hold it inside a bag without tipping, smelling, or letting that bag slip down into the can, and allow for that bag to be quickly cinched up and pulled out. We dismissed cans that let the bags slip in when the trash got heavy. For our 201update, that was a major concern that had less weight in the previous version.

Pull Quote

We think step cans, those with lids that open with a foot press, are the best for most households.

We also narrowed our focus to cans that don’t require you to touch the can with your hands. In other words: We think step cans, those with lids that open with a foot press, are the best for most households. After rotating trash cans into duty in both an office and a home, we realized that one so often has their hands dirty, or full, that most people should avoid cans that require touching the can to open. That meant dismissing swing-top, fold-in, button-release, open, and butterfly-style cans. Instead, we sought cans with lids that opened and closed smoothly with a convenient pedal, could be kept open for long cleaning jobs, and would not damage walls or other surfaces if opened with great force.

A trash can doesn’t have to look like a luxury appliance to earn our respect, but it can’t be a total eyesore. More than appearance, it should be able to continue looking good after being put through regular use. We avoided cans that were overly stylized or patently boring or ugly, or seemed impossible to care for over the long haul.

Even securely held bags can break, tear, or leak inside a trash can, and we wanted to ensure no trash can was too punishing to clean out inside. We hoisted each can up onto a kitchen counter to wash it with a sink sprayer, and reached inside each can with cleaning spray and paper towels, noting crevices or angles inside the can (usually at the bottom) where it was hard to pick up everything.

As was the case in 2014, there is little research in this category available outside the industry, or in publications. We found a 200Slate feature, a 200MetaFilter thread, a brief Real Simple overview in 2012, and a lot of revenue-focused guides on design and home-goods blogs. Lacking easy waypoints, we narrowed a field of 80 contenders across two years down to a handful of competitors to test.

Toter 025564-R1GRS 64-Gallon Trash Can

Toter is known for their ability to make top quality products that look good even after years of use. Well, one of these products is the 025564-R1GRS 64-Gallon Trash Can. It comes with everything you expect a waste bin to have and loaded with several features for ultimate convenience.

Recycle to Reduce Trash

This is quite obvious. We will have lesser issues with the trash can if we reduce trash levels. But, how can you reduce trash? You can use a recycling bin for things that can be recycled in your community. For instance, our town has different places where we can drop off items for recycling. Other towns pick up recyclables from the curb. You can disassemble cardboard boxes. Plastic containers can also be rinsed. The trash you produce will be reduced when you do all of these things.

Minimize Food Waste

Majority of the spills, messes, and sloshes that require cleaning in the trash can is caused by rotten food. You can use a compost pile o garbage disposal to lessen the volume of food waste you produce. Using a double bag can also reduce spillage in the trash can when you need to dispose some food waste. We normally wrap meat trimmings and similar items in grocery bags to prevent creating a mess. These are items that we would normally have to dispose of.

Avoid Bad Smells from the Trash Can

Bad smell coming from the trash can is one of the worst things we need to deal with. You can do a number of things to avoid bad smells from the trash can. Sprinkling baking soda in the trash can absorbs a good amount of the odor. Dryer sheets and kitty litter can also be used for the same purpose. You can be creative and prevent your trash can to give off a bad smell that everyone dislikes.

Drill Some Holes in Outdoor Cans

You can also drill holes at the bottom of outdoor trash cans. This allows you to easily clean the interior of the trash can without having to turn it upside down to dump dirty water. It also allows rain water to drain out easily from the trash can. You can simply rinse the trash can with an outdoor hose. Mild dish soap can also be used to clean it up. After this, you can simply let it dry out.

Be Aware of Where You Store Trash

When it comes to storing trash cans, it is advisable to store them outside the garage on top of a concrete slab. While you will ultimately decide this, you also have to consider the homeowners association and city codes. You should also consider that outdoor trash cans attract animals and insects. Due to this, you should do something to prevent this situation. This also allows you to keep animals and insects from invading your home.

Nate Morse

A born and raised Michigander, Nate has been exposed to the great outdoors and all it has to offer.  While Nate never had the opportunity to go camping in an RV as a child it was his first RV show that had him hooked on the RVing lifestyle and the freedom and experiences it has to offer young and old alike.

Performance

When dribbling the basketball does the ball perform consistently, or does it have off center bounces making it hard to control? Basketballs with off-center bounces are frustrating to use and often end up in the closet or the trash.

This seems to be a popular feature for those wanting to be able to palm a basketball.  Grip is essentially a measure of how easily a basketball is to clutch or hold.  A proper amount of grip allows for the basketball to be controlled during, but not so much grip that it loses feel.

Similar to grip, but different.  When using the basketball does it feel connected to your hands making dribbling and control effortless?  A basketball with good feel has a good balance between cushion and stability.  Feel is the most important factor for dribbling in basketball performance.

Who should get this

A Wi-Fi surveillance camera on your front porch, over your garage, or attached to your back deck can provide a peek at what really goes bump in the night, whether that’s someone stealing packages off your steps or raccoons going through garbage cans. It can alert you to dangers and can create a record of events. It should also help you to identify someone—and if it’s a welcome or unwelcome guest—or just let you monitor pets or kids when you’re not out there with them.

Our pick

The Arlo Pro is a reliable outdoor Wi-Fi camera that’s compact and completely wireless, thanks to a removable, rechargeable battery that, based on our testing, should provide at least a couple of months of operation on a charge. It’s also the only device on our list that offers seven days of free cloud storage, and packs in motion- and audio-triggered recordings for whenever you get around to reviewing them.

The Arlo Pro requires a bridge unit, known as the Base Station, which needs to be powered and connected to your router. The Base Station is the brains behind the system, but also includes a piercing 100-plus–decibel siren, which can be triggered manually through the app or automatically by motion and/or audio.

With a 130-degree viewing angle and 720p resolution, the Arlo Pro provided clear video footage during both day and night, and the two-way audio was easy to understand on both ends. The system also features the ability to set rules, which can trigger alerts for motion and audio. You can adjust the level of sensitivity so that you don’t get an alert or record a video clip every time a car drives by. You can also set up alerts based on a schedule or geofencing using your mobile device, but you can’t define custom zones for monitoring. All of those controls are easy to find in the Arlo app, which is available for iOS and Android devices.

If you’re looking to add the Arlo Pro to a smart-home system, the camera currently works with Stringify, Wink, and IFTTT (“If This Then That”). SmartThings certification was approved and will be included in a future app update. The Arlo Pro is also compatible with ADT Canopy for a fee.

The blog formerly known as

There are plenty of other options for home composting besides the one we chose. Tumblers, traditional bins, worm bins, bokashi are all methods of converting bio waste into soil. Back in 2007, I explained why we chose our composting method. Here in Oakland, the city offers residents discounted composters and worm bins. Other cities may offer subsidized compost bins too. A quick search shows programs in New York City, Massachusetts, Thurston County WA, and many others.
