portable hottub Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy portable hottub, right? No!

Energy Efficiency

The SaluSpa Siena has been designed specifically as a two person Inflatable hot tub. There would be enough space in the centre to accommodate two small children, but this is a very grown up tub, in every sense of the word.

The Siena is our recommended hot tub for couples. It is by some distance the best inflatable hot tub for two.

The Coleman SaluSpa and Miami will accommodate four adults although in our opinion for a comfortable hot tub experience they are best suited for just two people that’s why we have included them here.

Energy Use

The answer to energy use and costs has too many variables to give a real guide. Some inflatable hot tubs are fitted with a 1300 Watt heater, which is the main drain on electricity and your wallet.

So as pointed out in the “How Large” note above the hot tubs physical size is important. The bigger the tub the higher the maintenance and energy costs. This is where a tub timer can be important.

The inflatable hot tub buyer has a large range of prices and features to choose from so it is important to list the features you need and the size you want. Given the wide range available you will certainly be able to find what you need.

We have reviewed what we consider the best portable and inflatable hot tub options for 201They have incorporated what we believe to be the best features at their particular price points.

Diabetes

Sitting in your tub lowers blood sugar levels for people with Type Diabetes. Dr Steve Faulkner of Loughborough University found that a soak in the tub reduces peak blood sugar levels by per cent more than an hour cycling, and increases energy expenditure levels by 80 per cent burning 12calories per hour.

Headaches: The hot water provided by the tub helps vascular dilation and can provide tension related pain relief associated with some forms of headaches.

Back Pain: Hot tubs stimulate blood flow.  This helps to brings healing nutrients to the affected area of the low back. Warming the body in the warm water inhibits the pain messages being sent to the brain.

Outdoors

Temperatures of below 40ºF are not recommended by the hot tub manufacturers, Freezing temperatures will ice up, and ruin heater and pump. So it is time store the tub away for next year or even better set it up indoors.

If you have space inside for your inflatable hot tub, great news. Lets make sure its the right space.

Ideally you should be able to walk around the tub, and have easy access to the pump and heater unit. Check the electrical connection you are plugging into, and remember that your hot tub produces a lot of heat and humidity, so be sure the ventilation is sufficient to cope with it.

Installing Inside

If you install your tub indoors, then your biggest concern is ventilating all of the moisture given off by the tub, and you obviously need proper drainage.

Installing Outside: The closer it is to your home, the lower your installation costs. Those electric wires that run from your home out to your hot tub’s electrical panel are expensive, so the closer the better, not to mention the labor involved if you have to dig a trench across or under who knows what to bury electrical cables.

If it’s going on the ground, remember that if you live in a colder climate, every spring the ground thaws out and if you have your tub sitting on the ground, once the ground starts to melt next spring, it will shift the weight of the water in your tub, creating major stress, and if the shell cracks, you’ve got major problems.

You are either going to have to dig a hole at least four feet deep down to get below the frostline and pour a concrete slab that deep or, if it is going on a deck, then make sure the deck can support all that extra weight.

An average six person hot tub full of water will weigh at least 5000 lbs. without any of your crazy, drunken friends in there splashing around, so see if the area you are thinking about installing your tub on will take the weight. If not, you might have to look at digging some four foot deep holes to pour concrete support columns that come up just above ground level or higher and then sit four inch square, pressure treated wooden posts that will sit right under your deck’s floor joists, under the deck, to help support the weight of your tub. Four concrete columns will work fine and you might be able to get away with just two if done properly. Any carpenter or good handyman can do this for you if you’re not familiar with the procedure but if it has to be done, do it before your tub goes in.

It would suck to have all your friends over for a hot tub party and the entire tub collapsing on your deck, not to mention live electrical wires coming loose with water splashing everywhere and people stepping in it. Not the kind of buzz they intended on getting at your party. I smell lawsuit if someone gets hurt, or worse, so why take the chance? Do it right the first time.

Tip: Don’t forget to have your electrician fill in any drilled holes in your home or hot tub skirting with electrical putty so mice won’t get in there and build a nest. Mice love the heat but they hate that electrical putty.

Features

Has a rapid-heating system; water volume heats up to the maximum temperature in under 30 minutes with no overheating.

Chemicals

Hot tubs may also have a different selection of chemicals than each other. Some may use industrial grade solvents while others have a natural selection. These chemicals differ in terms of safety if they are leaked, and the compatibility with the operation of the tub itself.

As a future hot tub owner, you should know what fluids reside inside your units, which will help you make a better choice in terms of the kind of best portable hot tub you want to go for.

Materials

Portable hot tub units are either inflatable or solid. Solid units are more expensive and difficult to maintain than the inflatable ones. Solid/hard units are often made from a material commonly known as perma-flex which awards the unit a rigid structure as well as the ability to hold in more heat.

Inflatable units are made from multi-layered vinyl, but a different blend of polymers may also be used. Inflatable units may thus need an extra layer of insulation to retain more heat.

In selecting a portable unit thus, you should be wary of the insulation provided and the temperatures that the unit under consideration can endure. Commonly, the more long-lasting the material is, the pricier the unit would be. So, keep that in mind when looking for the best portable hot tub.

Digital Features

Modern portable hot tubs are mostly digitally operated. This means that the best portable hot tub has a separate panel from where all controls can be regulated. This reduces a disorganized array of overlapping wires, and in case of a fault, it becomes easier to find the anomaly and do the repairs.

Manually controlled hot tubs are very rare to find these days, but quite a large number of brands provide a combination of manual and digital controls for their hot tub units so that the tub is able to retain its most basic functions even if there is no access to a power supply. Commonly, the more digitally operational a model is, the more expensive it will be, even though it may be easier to maintain and work with.

Additional Features

If you are investing in the best portable hot tub with an intention to splurge and obtain a truly luxurious product, the possibilities for customization might just be endless. A lot of brands offer plenty of cosmetic alterations to the design, size, and style of the hot tub to create a truly personalized product.

You can add underwater lights, faux tiles, color-changing led or fairy lights, mini waterfalls, food and drink holders, and many other features. You can even purchase a longer warranty and overtime repair services from the same brand that you purchase your hot tub from, which will reduce the hassle if you ever run into any issues with your product.

The number of custom details will only be subject to your imagination and the amount of money you choose to spend.

We hear you.

Read on to discover all you need to know about this new emerging market with our in-depth inflatable hot tub reviews for 2018, featuring a varied selection of tubs, Discover the very best portable spas that come in well under £1000 and don’t require a whole team of professionals to install them and set up.

With the ever-increasing price of traditional hot tubs and spas, the design and manufacture of blow up Jacuzzi’s has emerged as one of the fastest growing markets in leisure industry.

Lay-Z-Spa Hawaii AirJet Hot Tub

The Lay-Z-Spa Hawaii AirJet brings a little taste of the Tropics into your life. Seating up to adults, this good time inflatable jacuzzi has many features and is all about letting your hair down, relaxing and experiencing the numerous benefits of a rejuvenating spa.

Downsides

Hard to give any real negatives with this one. The round shape will maybe not be ideal for everyone, but that’s really being a bit picky. Just a fantastic, hot portable water tub that will provide years of memorable fun and soothing relaxation.

Grand Rapids Plug & Play Hot Tub

The Grand Rapids Plug & Play star reviewed hot tub is another pearl of a jacuzzi that seats up to adults. Easy to set up and pack away, the tub’s portability allows it to be taken anywhere that has a flat surface plus a water and power supply.

The location

Although all of the  above are portable, location is still the most important factor when setting them up. The area will need to be flat and able to support the weight of perhaps a 1000+ litres of water so it’s no good placing it on some dodgy decking that has seen better days.

The place you choose must also be free of any debris that could damage the exterior of the tub such as rocks, gravel, sharp twigs and stones. While they are made from tough material it isn’t completely indestructible and leaks can occur if punctured.

It is also a good idea to check there is nothing above your Jacuzzi that could fall and cause damage such as wall-mounted planters It is advisable to place your newly pur-chased hot tub on a patio or level surface, if it is on the grass you may need a tarpau-lin to protect the bottom.

Placing your new spa near to a fence or in a sheltered spot will not only make the ex-perience more pleasurable but also helps to reduce running costs.

You also need to check that your hosepipe will reach the desired location as filling your Jacuzzi with buckets will be a daunting task.

Inflation

The filter is an important feature of your hot tub as it keeps the water clean and prevents the build-up of bacteria. Insert the provided filter into the casing and attach it to the outlet which can usually be found near the bottom on the inside of the tub. The filter should be cleaned after each use and changed regularly otherwise they will become clogged and unable to function properly. It is also advisable to change the water regularly so that bacteria doesn’t build up.

Filling the Jacuzzi

Now it’s time to fill your hot tub with the garden hose, depending on the water pressure most tubs take a couple of hours to fill and have a line on the inside to let you know the right level. Never leave children unsupervised while your hot tub is filling and always make sure the thermostat and breaker switch are turned off and disconnected. While monitoring the process you can check for leaks if you suspect a leak turn the water supply off at once as continuing filling will just cause further damage.

Heating the water

The choice is seemingly endless, and one thing is guaranteed as the popularity of inflatable spas increases so will the accessories.

Improves Cardio-Vascular health

Heart disease is one of the biggest killers in Britain. We are all aware that stop-ping smoking, regular exercise and a healthy diet are beneficial to cardio-vascular health, but did you know a soak in the warm bubbles of a hot tub gives your heart a workout too.

This is because the pressure of the water makes your heart beat faster, which increases blood flow and improves circulation, and it’s much preferable than going to the gym.

Helps with aches and pain

The massaging jets of a rejuvenating hot tub are a godsend for people suffering from ailments such as arthritis, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other types joint or muscular pain.

It is easier to move in water due to the buoyancy which can help build strength that is why hydrotherapy is often recommended for people suffering from back, joint or knee problems, whilst providing much-needed relief, it also im-proves the range of movement.

Diabetes

Scientific research has shown that regular soaks in a hot tub may reduce the blood sugar levels, great news for those suffering from type diabetes.

The warm temperature of the water increases the heart-rate simulating physi-cal exercise and recent studies show that time spent in a hot tub can decrease blood sugar levels by up to 10% that’s more than one hour’s cycling. That’s right, you are actually using up calories while you kick back and relax.

Healthy skin

Stress and fatigue are well known to cause breakouts and premature aging and as mentioned previously; relaxing in a hot tub reduces stress and helps you sleep better which can help with these two issues.

Let’s Wrap It Up!

The first on our list claims to be the best-selling inflatable hot tub in the UK, and having seen the specifications and price, we can quite believe it. The Lay-Z-Spa follows a format that will become familiar to you as you read on: it’s portable so when not in use will not take up a great amount of room, and it inflates quickly thanks to the pump and heater that is part of the package. It is big enough for up to four people, and can be used anywhere there is a flat surface – even indoors! You get a full filter system and chemical package, and a DVD that instructs you fully on set-up.

Features to Look Out For

There you go, ten inflatable hot tubs – well, eight, plus a bath tub and a handy bar accessory – reviewed for your pleasure, and we hope there’s one for you among the choices. There are some features that are important when looking for a hot tub, so let’s recap on the important ones.

Size – choose one that fits as many people as will likely use it; most are suitable for four, some as many as eight.

Spa – you want one with a good spa system; the more water jets, the better, and make sure you have full control of the system.

Heat – all of these can heat to 40C, so that’s more than adequate for a comfortable bath.

Portable – if you don’t want a hot tub as a permanent fixture, you need one that will deflate to a small size. Check the dimensions before you choose.

Other features – a couple of these have lighting systems which can be great fun.

That’s just a few of the features you need to check out; we would have included price, but as all of these are covered by a couple of hundred pounds difference there is bound to be something to suit your budget.

How It Works

The concept behind an inflatable hot tub is simple: think of it as a grown-up version of the child’s paddling pool, but bigger and with heated water. With most models, you get the pool plus a pump and heater, and all you need to do is connect the pump which inflates the tub, and then fill it with water and wait for it to heat up. There are many different sizes of inflatable hot tub so you will be able to find one big enough for all the family, or small enough to fit in even the most restricted spaces.

Strong Spas SS13300300 Rio 1Jet Spa

If durability is your main concern with a spa, then the high priced Strong Spas SS13300300 Rio 1Jet Spa should be your first choice. Composed of an indestructible resin cabinet, this is made up of the strongest materials of any jet spa or hot tub on the list. The built in heater gets similar treatment and is an all-weather stainless steel model that won’t easily break under heavy conditions. Because of the shape, 4-people can be comfortably seated in it and they’ll enjoy the soothing massage of the foot jets.

Personal Opinion

Once upon a time buying a hot tub or a spa was a tough process and a lot more expensive that it is now. The technology didn’t match up with what was being offered, and the market had products that were vastly overpriced for what they were offering. Part of the problem had to do with it being more of a luxury item than one that regular residential owners could have, so with less competition in the market, there was a lot less product being pushed. Right around the time that inflatable hot tubs started to become more durable is when things really took off, and it has been great since.

Without the worry of a single hole destroying a product that customers just dropped a couple of grand on, it became an easier pill to swallow. Now inflatable hot tubs and spas are as durable or more than any other inflatable product on the market. This includes inflatable air mattresses, which have also come a long way in history. Factoring in the amount of the research that went into making hot tubs and spas more durable along with the research they used to make the mechanics more efficient would span years.

There are some favorite brands that consumers flock to when making a purchase but they aren’t set in stone, so follow with caution. Pay attention to the features and also what you’ll be using the hot tub for. A non-inflatable model may be more to your liking if you don’t plan on moving it much, but it will cost a little bit more for the purchase.

Location

Inflatable Spas are generally for outdoor use. The leakage or over spills may damage your floors or carpet. It would be a good idea to choose a shaded spot outside and make sure there is a good drain system nearby.

Size

There are many different sizes of inflatable spas out there, ones that hold people and ones that hold The spa will need to fit comfortably where you install it. Do some measuring and make sure everything fits before buying your inflatable spa.

When installing the hot tub the water required is about 200 gallons. Plus people can weigh up to 2500 pounds. Therefore be aware of this if you decide to install the spa in a deck or an upper floor.

Hot Tubs

Buying a portable hot tub is a big investment. But it´s surprising how many people buy one without doing as much research as they would do if they were buying a car.

There are dozens of hot tub manufacturers out there and in between them, there are hundreds of different models to choose from. It´s not an easy task so it´s only right to take your time and read as much as you can about buying a spa.

This article aims to give you a birds eye-view about the most important things you need to know and consider when buying a portable hot tub.

Dreammaker Escape

Remember what I said about inflatable hot tubs being very fragile and easy to get punctured? Well, DreamMaker, a leading portable hot tub manufacturer has a hot tub called Dreammaker Escape.

It´s not quite inflatable nor is it made of acrylic. It´s the portable hot tub that´s meant to be the cop out if you didn´t want to spend so much on a hot tub, but didn´t want to buy one that breaks down the next day either.

Hot Spring Highlife Sovereign

This cannot be overstated. Whichever way you look at it, a hot tub is a high-ticket, luxury, discretionary item, even, what the industry considers to be the cheaper end of the market. They are also complicated pieces of electromechanical equipment which, once they are in place, are not easy to remove again. It is therefore important that you buy a reputable product from a retailer who can help you through the entire buying process and who can offer comprehensive on-site warranty coverage for a number of years. Once you have decided what kind of hot tub you would like and its best location for you, take some time to choose an experienced, reputable dealer. Look for a BISHTA Member dealer and you will get someone who is dedicated to providing excellent, uncompromised service.

Make sure you try before you buy! Most retailers encourage you to test soak before you buy. This is the best way to ensure you choose the hot tub that is perfect for you. You would not spend many thousands of pounds on any other product without trying it out beforehand, and hot tubs are no different. Each one has their own unique feel. When you do wet-test, note the depth of the water, the seating capacity and location of seats, and the variety and power of the jets. Look for a hot tub with seats deep enough to cover your shoulders; others should be high enough to let you cool down. Make sure you can stretch out and get comfortable. You should check the power available to each jet in each seat, and how controllable that power is. If you have a particular condition that you are looking for your hot tub to relieve, check how it feels to you.

Timber hot tubs

For people looking for a traditional, rustic feel, wooden hot tubs are the perfect solution. Made from oak, redwood or teak, timber hot tubs look like the wine barrels of yesteryear. Timber hot tubs offer the added benefit of natural aromatherapy that cannot be found with any other hot tub construction. As with acrylic hot tubs (see below) timber hot tubs need a permanent platform on which to be sited. Unlike other hot tubs and spas, a timber hot tub can use a wood-fuelled fire as its heat source, allowing it to be placed in remote locations without need for an electrical connection. This type of hot tub can be of simplistic design, consisting of the barrel and bench seating. Given the natural makeup of their construction, timber hot tubs can require more maintenance than acrylic hot tubs, but many people choose them for their aesthetic appeal. Please note there are timber hot tubs that can use conventional spa pumps and jets. Acrylic hot tubs Portable acrylic hot tubs are what most often spring to mind when somebody mentions a hot tub. They are the most popular type of hot tub on the market and usually seat between two to ten people. They consist of an aboveground, self-contained unit that requires a power supply and a permanent ground support, usually a concrete pad. Acrylic hot tubs, in general, are more expensive than inflatable hot tubs and offer better aesthetic value. These are the hot tubs which provide all the high tech benefits and can become real luxury items – depending on your budget. The choices when buying any type of model includes things like: the number of seats, the efficiency and power of the jets and the ease of the cleaning regime. There are a number of gadgets and optional features like DVD players and speakers that you may wish to upgrade your hot tub with. They normally come with an expansive warranty and have a longer life span than inflatable and soft hot tubs.

Soft tubs

Soft tubs are another example of a soft shelled hot tub, typically made of vinyl, where rigidity to the structure is usually provided by a foam core. They can also be permanently sited, or emptied and moved as required, or even taken on holiday.

Inground spas

Inground spas, including those installed as part of a pool/ spa combination, are the most expensive of all spas, seating between two to sixteen people. The spa’s shell and equipment are all delivered to site separately and require assembly and installation on-site; and the spa itself is concreted permanently into the ground. In-ground spas require installation from a professional pool or spa contractor because of the excavation, concrete, plumbing and electrical works involved. In-ground spas also need to be permitted by Local Authorities, as well as inspected upon completion. Heating is usually provided from separate electrical or gas heating units. For those for whom budget is not an issue, inground spas offer the widest range of options, and can have unique, customised finishes which cannot be attained with a portable spa.
