RV Power Converter Troubleshooting

First of all, determine if the RV power converter is the component which has malfunctioned in the system. After connecting the RV power converter to the power supply, proceed to check if the voltage, at the point of entry, is in the range of 108-130 volts, as any reading within this range will be okay.

After ascertaining the above, you can then check the voltage at the point where the RV power converter connects to the 12-volt DC breaker box. If at any time, the fan malfunctions, it is pretty easy to replace the fan, but it may be tricky finding a replacement. Make sure you have the details of the original fan, such as: the make, the amperage, and the voltage. Online sources may help you find the correct one.

There are cases where a fan of a different make would be suitable for an RV power converter, but the voltage and amperage should be checked to see if they match those of the initial fan. The motor from a different make of fan may also fit in the RV power converter.

You can use any 12-volt DC resistor, provided the values are the same. These type are mostly used in automotive applications. After you are done with replacing the resistor, see to it that your batteries are fully charged using the right voltage.

You may find yourself in a situation which makes it hard for you to get the necessary replacement for the damaged part of your RV power converter. Quick tip: Be sure to wipe your EZ-Clings with water when you first get them. A thin film protects the Mylar sheets during production, and it can leave a waxy residue on your car windows if you use the shades right out of the box without a wipe-down.

A good travel pillow is difficult to find. You want something that won’t take up much space, can expand when it needs to, and, ideally, allows you to wedge it into shape for use as a shoulder/neck pillow when necessary, such as on a plane or in the passenger seat of a car.

At night, the pillow unrolls and expands into a decent bed pillow, though side sleepers with larger frames may say it has too little padding. But this is a travel pillow, of course, so it will never feel like home, which is all part of the fun somehow. I sleep on my side and back, and I found it exceptionally comfortable compared with camping pillows I’ve used in the past, although I did have to supplement it with a flannel shirt when I wanted to sleep on my side.

Detours

Make time in your trip for the detours. If there’s one bit of non-gear-related advice we can give, it’s that the complicated route always proves to be more interesting. You will have times in the car when a sort of tunnel vision can set in, and the destination becomes all-consuming. At my worst, I found myself mentally calculating the time saved for every increase in miles per hour as I pressed down the accelerator, as if the scenery I was flying past wasn’t what I had come to see in the first place.

You can find many ways to plan a trip. But every so often, take a risk and make a left when every map and device is telling you to go right. You won’t know where you’ll end up—and that’s the whole point.

Binoculars might not be a necessity. Factor in the start-up current

When choosing an inverter, always bear in mind the start-up current will be much greater than the labelled output power. For example, a microwave with an 800W output power may need a much higher supply during start up and a 1,500W inverter would be recommended for this particular duty. The trouble is, a powerful inverter will hammer your leisure battery.

The 12-volt battery is just one twentieth of the level of mains voltage (240V) so, for the same power, the amps drawn at 1volts will be twenty times as much.

But it doesn’t end there as you need to allow an extra 10% for inverter inefficiencies so actually a ratio of 22:is about right.

Hence for every amp taken by the mains equipment you are powering, you will be taking about 22A from the battery. A 1,000W inverter at maximum power will take about 100A from the battery. This could drain a 100Ah battery flat in less than one hour (though you’d never do this in practice – it would be unlikely to recover from a full discharge).

Inverter Efficiency

Sometimes bigger is not better. What we really need to know is what percentage of the power that goes into the inverter from the battery comes out the other side as AC power. To make this calculation even more difficult, the efficiency of an inverter changes with the output load placed on it. if a small load is put on an inverter it may be only around 50% efficient. However increase the load to near the inverters stated maximum continuous load and the efficiency will rise to around 90%.

Practically this means that you coud run your 20 Watt appliance for much longer on the same battery by choosing to use the 150 Watt inverter rather than the 3000 inverter.
