The Insider Pick

Makeup organizers should make your makeup routine easier, and that’s exactly what the Jerrybox 360 Degree Rotation Adjustable Multi-Function Cosmetic Storage Box does. It’s super customizable, keeps your cosmetics within reach, is large enough to hold many products, and displays everything elegantly with its carousel design.

A makeup organizer may sound like a purchase you simply don’t need, but it can actually save you a good amount of time as well as space. If you’re constantly digging through purses and crammed pouches to find the cosmetics you need every day, you’re just adding time to your morning makeup routine. If your makeup is spread out all over the place, it’s likely taking up more space than it needs to, plus it just looks messy.

Makeup organizers allow you to access the brushes, palettes, and other cosmetics you need without much thought. Once you know where every piece of your makeup collection is, picking up the product you need doesn’t require any extra effort. An organizer can help you condense your collection, encouraging you to keep products that you actually use and throw out ones that you haven’t used in years, and are likely expired.

Regardless of how well you take care of your organizer, makeup is simply prone to leaving behind power, reside, or liquids, so you should always consider how easily the materials of the organizer can be cleaned.

My Favorite Makeup Organizers.

One reviewer  actually uploaded a handy unboxing and assembly video to give you an idea of how easy it is to set up.

As far as downsides go, they are few and far between. Some reviewers say it can’t hold flat palettes and other cosmetics well, and a few complain that it looks cheap.  Overall, most reviewers approve of the design and how easy it is to use, though.

From the fabric for the upper exterior pocket panels (laminate in our sample), cut TWO 14½” wide x 7½” high rectangles.

From the fusible foam, cut TWO 13½” x 8½” rectangles for the exterior panels.

From the fusible fleece, cut TWO 13½” x 6½” rectangles for the upper exterior pockets.

From the grosgrain ribbon, cut ONE 13” length and ONE 2” length.

Exterior upper pockets

Slip one length of bias tape over the top raw edge of each mesh panel. Note that one side of the bias tape is ever so slightly longer than the other. This slightly longer side should go against what will be the inside of the mesh pocket. Pin or clip the bias tape in place.

Re-thread the machine with thread to best match the bias tape in the top and bobbin but keep the lengthened stitch. Switch back to a standard presser foot.

Edgestitch across each mesh panel through all the layers. Go slowly and carefully, making sure you are catching the front and back of the binding in this one seam.

Place a bound mesh pocket right side up on top of each laminate pocket. The side and bottom edges of the two layers should be flush. Pin or clip along the sides. Then, baste along each side of each layered panel.

NOTE: The laminate and mesh is tricky to mark with a fabric pen or pencil. We used, and recommend, using pins to mark.

Re-thread the machine with thread to best match the laminate and mesh in the top and bobbin but keep the lengthened stitch.

On the layered pocket panel without the buttonhole (this is the front panel), measure to find the exact center. Mark with pins or draw in a vertical guide line with a fabric pen from the bottom up to the top of the laminate pocket.

Hammer in place. As you can see in the photo above, we are using a granite block as a base for our hammering. A solid surface is very important for the smoothest and easiest seal of the rivet.

Place a foam panel on the wrong side of each fabric panel. It should be centered so there is ½” of fabric showing beyond the foam on all four sides. Following manufacturer’s instructions, fuse the foam in place on each panel.

Using a pair of sharp scissors, trim back the foam at a slight diagonal on all sides. This will help grade the thickness of the foam more smoothly into the seams.

Create the lining

Place a length of binding across the folded edge of each pocket panel. We are using the folded edge as the top. When bound, it will be a bit more stable than two raw edges. Pin in place. As above with the mesh pocket panels, note that one side of the bias tape is ever so slightly longer than the other. This slightly longer side should go against what will be the inside of the pocket. Pin or clip the bias tape in place.

Re-thread the machine with thread to best match the bias tape in the top and bobbin. The stitch should still be lengthened. If need be, switch back to a standard presser foot.

Edgestitch across each pocket panel through all the layers. Go slowly and carefully, making sure you are catching the front and back of the binding in this one seam.

Place the main lining panels right side up and flat on your work surface.

Find the zipper and the zipper tab.

Fold the zipper tab in half, wrong sides together, so it is now 1″ x 3″. Finger press to set a center crease line.

Open up the zipper halfway.

Slip the top end ends of the zipper into the tab. The ends of the zipper should be flush with one folded-in side of the tab. The top stops of the zipper ends (the top of the zipper pull) should sit just below the fold of the tab as shown in the photo.

If things are fitting, trim the zipper ends slightly to adjust.

With the zipper open, but keeping the zipper ends together – ie. side by side. Pin the zipper ends in place on the tab.

Re-fold the tab along the original crease line, sandwiching the zipper ends between the layers. Pin in place; the inner folds should be flush on either side of the zipper.

Smooth the zipper into position across the top and mark the zipper tape at the ½” mark at the right edge of the panel. This is where the zipper will be trimmed to fit.

Find the remaining end tab. Place the tab right side down on the wrong side of the zipper so the center of the tab aligns with the marking pins. In other words, one inner raw edge in aligned with this mark.

Flatten the tab and place the zipper back down into place on the exterior panel to double check that the center of the tab is indeed aligned with your original ½” mark on the panel and that the opposite finished end still aligns with its ½” mark.

Bring the tab back around into position. You’ve now sandwiched this bottom end just as you did the top end. As above, the folded ends should be flush on either side of the zipper. Pin in place.

Insert the zipper between the exterior and the lining

Re-pin the zipper in place across the top, double checking that the zipper and the panel are right sides together, that each tabbed end sits ½” in from the sides of the panel, and that the zipper pull is situated so, when closed, it’s to the left of the front piece. After checking the position, open the zipper half way.

Make sure the zipper is open half way.

Fold the exterior pieces right sides together. Align the raw edges along both sides and across the bottom. Pin in place.

Grommet Tools

Carefully cut out the holes with sharp scissors through all the layers of the pocket.

Slip one end of the ribbon through the Swivel Hook. Tuck under the raw end ” and continue pulling through about ½”. Pin in place.

Re-thread the machine with thread to best match the ribbon in the top and bobbin. Attach a standard presser foot and re-set the stitch length to normal.  ” again. Stitch across to secure the hem.

IN THIS ARTICLE

Multi-Tool: You can use this alone, but with its simplistic build, the GRis intended to go into the field with anyone who needs a little spare space. It can hook on a medic’s field bag or attach in and around body armor without a hitch or a catch. It is precisely what it says: An additional pocket for when you plan on heading into the field, the bush, the brush, or just out for a day on the river.

Kifaru 500D Organizer Pocket

Commando: Long and flat, this piece operates in tandem with a backpack to help you keep all your smaller items organized. It can be carried on it’s own, but it works much better when organizing the items you need while camping, hiking, boating, or mountaineering, rather than giving you a place to put your third “work” iPhone.

Knomo Knomad Air

Elitist: A folio style folder, the Knomad Air is lightly coated cotton canvas, giving it enough durability to survive baggage handling and extended meetings, but it lacks the grit for going off-road and off-track. More of a replacement for clunky briefcases, this holds files, tablets, phones, and the items of a professional without the bulk of a bigger body.

This is Ground Tech Dopp Kit

Wired: There’s a place inside for each of your many power-hungry accessories and spots for their cords and chargers. Depending on how much you have to tote around, you can get the 9” x 9” large, a 9” x 5.5” medium, or a wee 6.5” x 5.5” small. Each are more than 2-and-a-quarter inches thick, allowing for a compartment underneath for battery backups and flash drives. Every one is handmade out of leather in Los Angeles, giving them American quality through and through.

Diaper Totes

Diaper totes are like oversized handbags. They usually come with either one long shoulder strap or two shorter handle straps. Some come with detachable straps so you can turn the tote into a backpack or messenger bag if preferred.

Diaper totes tend to be discreet diaper bags, i.e. many look like big stylish handbag rather than baby diaper bag. There is great variety of colors, patterns, fabric, and styles on offer, making tote diaper bags very popular, especially among women. However, there are diaper totes available aimed towards both parents.

The biggest downside of diaper totes is that they can be heavy to carry and put unnecessary strain on the shoulders and neck. They can also restrict your movements somewhat, which can be tricky when dealing with young baby or toddler.

This is why many parents prefer diaper backpacks or messenger bags as they leave the hands free and are easier to carry.

Diaper Backpacks

Backpack diaper bag can look like any other backpack but comes with extra compartments dedicated for all the baby stuff you need, e.g. hold changing pad, wipes, bottle, etc.

Diaper backpacks are very practical choice for parents. Carrying the bag on your back means the weight is more evenly distributed and your hands are free to look after your baby.

Most diaper backpacks are unisex so both parents should be happy with carrying the backpack around.

Stroller Handlebar Diaper Bags

Most specialists now advice against stroller diaper bags, as hanging heavy bag on the handlebar can cause the stroller to tip backward and could hurt your baby. It is safer to store your diaper bag in the shopping basket underneath the stroller.

There are number of practical things to have in mind when choosing the best diaper bag for you and your baby.

The Size

You want a bag big enough for all the things you need for your baby but not so big that you struggle finding what you need when you need it. Too big bag also increases the risk of you carrying too much in your bag, making it too heavy for comfortable and safe everyday use.

So think about what you need on daily basis and choose the size accordingly. Some people prefer to carry lot with them, other have to, e.g. those with twins or child with special needs. If this is the case, then you might want to consider owning separate smaller diaper bag or diaper wallet for shorter trips.

Comfort

Baby diaper bags can be surprisingly heavy so the lighter the empty bag is the better. All straps should be wide, padded, and adjustable. As importantly, how you carry the bag can make a lot of difference.

Being able to carry the bag across your chest (like messenger) or on your back (like backpack) is preferable as the weight is more evenly distributed and your hands are free to look after your baby.

Structure And Organization

Good internal and external structure is important. Consider the quality of the material used. The material should be durable and easy to clean, stress points reinforced, zippers sturdy, etc.

The internal and external organization is also important. Separate secure compartments can be handy and easy access to essentials is… well, essential. Most diaper bags come with changing pad, but if not, make sure there is enough space for one in the bag as you will need one.

Some of the best diaper bags come with insulated bottle holder and separate diaper wallet, i.e. for basic essentials for quick trips. You can also get diaper bags with separate compartments for cell phones and laptops / tablets.

This simple, lightweight, and well-stitched bag was the toughest packable we tested.

Duffel is a town in Belgium, once known for producing a strong woolen cloth that was perfect for making hard-wearing luggage. Though duffel bags are still popular to this day, wool has since been replaced by lighter, more-durable nylon cloth. Indeed, the lightest duffel bags now weigh less than a pound and pack into a side pocket. They’re perfect for extra storage when needed yet take up almost no space otherwise. To find the best packable duffel bag for your next trip, we hauled a bunch of awkward gear around in six top-rated bags, filling each with 30 pounds of rocks, stabbing them with Sharpie markers, scraping them on sidewalks, and overstuffing them to make sure the zippers can handle those last-minute gifts that you shouldn’t have waited to buy at the airport. In the end, L.L.Bean’s Lightweight Packable Duffle emerged as the best way to haul up to 40 liters of your unanticipated purchases and still fit it under your airline seat. It’s not the lightest or the toughest, but it strikes the best balance between the two.

Packable duffels we tested starting at top, going clockwise: High Sierra PackNGo, Eagle Creek Cargo Hauler, Eagle Creek Packable Duffel, Sea To Summit Ultra-Sil, L.L.Bean Packable Duffle, Granite Gear Packable Duffel.

L.L.Bean’s Lightweight Packable Duffle has great ergonomics, solid yet lightweight construction, and just the right size and feel. (It feels like a lighter version of a typical gym bag.) Despite its voluminous capacity, it’s about the size of a small bag of potato chips when packed into its pocket and weighs just ounces. That means it’s a bit lighter and smaller than the otherwise excellent Eagle Creek. But whereas the Eagle Creek developed pin-sized holes when scraped against the sidewalk, the L.L.Bean’s thinner fabric came away with only slight abrasions. Otherwise, they’re both great bags.

As far as ergonomics go, the L.L.Bean’s well-stitched side and end handles feel comfortable and balanced, even when overstuffed. Although it doesn’t allow for a shoulder strap, like the Eagle Creek, you could wear it as a slightly awkward backpack in a pinch. Overall however, we think the L.L.Bean’s tougher material and lighter weight make it the superior packable duffel for most uses.

If you want something even lighter, Sea to Summit’s Ultra-Sil weighs a mere 2.ounces and compresses down to the size of your fist. The parachute-like fabric has more tensile strength than the extremely thin material would appear to offer. Although it is very well stitched and was able to handle an awkward load, we suspect (and the manufacturers admit) that this bag wouldn’t survive the potential punctures or scrapings of a baggage handler’s toss—there were small tears after our sidewalk scrape test and the handles appeared strained under the weight of our 30-pound testing load.

Over the past four years we’ve researched several dozen suitcases and went hands on with the 4most promising candidates in a variety of tests—including having active Virgin America flight attendants test bags for us in a fake plane fuselage in their training facility. After testing was completed, we determined that for most people the Travelpro Platinum Magna offers the best balance of features, durability, and price for most flyers who log less than 25,000 miles annually.

Compression sacks

Originally designed for reducing the bulk of lofty sleeping bags, compression sacks are stuff sacks modified with additional nylon end caps that can be pulled together by strings or straps to remove air and create a smaller, denser package that’s easier to pack. Most travelers use compression sacks to condense socks, underwear, and other stuff you don’t mind getting wrinkled into a package with half as much overall volume. For example, an 8- to 12-liter sack can compress a fleece jacket and a long-weekend’s worth of socks and underwear into something that fits in one hand. They also make a decent pillow in a pinch.

Clothing

Snarky Nomad. That’s because clothing, which is very voluminous, makes up the bulk of what’s in your bag. He recommends traveling with basic-looking clothes because you can always buy or rent something nice in a pinch, whereas lugging around formalwear just in case will always be a pain. It also helps if you can avoid cotton and stick to merino and synthetic fabrics, which dry faster. This allows you to do laundry by hand in the sink as needed to reduce the amount of clothes you need to carry.

For women

Similar fabric to the Men’s Airism, with a no-ride cut for women, these underwear are the least expensive of any we tested and among the best performing.

Clothesline

Being on the road is no excuse to be sloppy. It’s always easier to make a good first impression (especially if you’re traveling on business, or to an event like a wedding) than to fix a bad one. It’s possible to build a travel hygiene kit out of the same products you use at home, but before you rush to buy a toiletry kit and little bottles, think about your goals for the trip and whether you need all that. If you’re traveling for business, you want to make sure you have everything to freshen up and look your best. But problems can arise when you feel the need to bring a bunch of stuff for leisure travel. Dyment laments that many travelers make the mistake of trying to bring all the comforts of their homes with them when they go on vacation—the hotel’s provided washcloth might not be your favorite, but it will be good enough. He remarks, “What’s the point of even leaving if you’re just trying to feel like you’re at home anyway?” So the next time you’re going on vacation, think about leaving the fancy (and heavy) liquid hair products and grooming tools at home.

Toiletry kit

We’ve researched dozens of travel toiletry bags and dopp kits over the past several years and tested nine top-rated contenders in our most recent round of tests. After packing and unpacking a week’s worth of travel-size toiletries, conducting spill tests, and living out of the top performers on the road, we think the Eagle Creek Pack-It Specter Wallaby (small) is a great option for carry-on travel. It’s leak-resistant, ultralight, efficiently organized, and features a huge swiveling hook that’s easy to hang from almost anywhere—even a shower rod.

For a silky feel and extra warmth

The Sea to Summit silk liner wicks moisture, doesn’t retain smells, packs down to the size of an apple, and even weighs less than one. It makes scratchy motel and hostel linens a lot more bearable.

Connecting

Having Internet access when you’re in unfamiliar surroundings can be invaluable. Wirecutter publisher Chris Mascari flies about 70,000 miles a year, and he made a great case for connecting whenever possible: “No matter where I’m going in the world, I always like to have a working smartphone with lots of data to use. It’s so world opening to have the power of the internet in my pocket when in completely unknown places.” Maps alone can be worth the cost, not to mention the ability to access countless recommended local spots and itineraries with just a few swipes. Check out our Mobile Extras section for reviews of the best battery packs, cables (Lightning and Micro-USB), LTE hotspots, Bluetooth speakers, and more.

Exploring

Weather-resistant Expedition Field Notes are great if you’re writing in wet conditions, but don’t get them if you don’t need them. The synthetic paper feels weird and can cause some inks to smear.

Leke Diaper Bags

The younger your child, the more diaper changes you’ll be doing and what better way to equip yourself than to carry an attractive Leke Diaper Bag? This bag is not only stylish but is also highly functional and comes in black, grey and blue colors. It looks so great in fact that you won’t feel remotely as if you’re carrying a high school backpack around, and it’s so chic you’ll probably want to use it even when not taking your kids with you.

It contains a spacious interior and multiple internal compartments (1pockets in total) making the storage of your baby changing essentials a breeze. Zip lock pockets keep baby’s belonging’s safe from little fingers and the backpack comes with its own removable change pad. Key features of this bag include an insulated bottle pocket and its very own wipes dispenser.

Made of nylon, the shoulder straps are comfortable for their designed purpose but a smart design also means the shoulder straps are the perfect width to hang neatly on your stroller. The waterproof design means you can easily clean any accidents and the fabric is breathable, soft and lightweight.

The workmanship of this bag leaves a little to be desired because the lining of the bag is quite thin and could be better stitched. The elastic on the pockets is not very stretchy therefore limiting the amount of things you can squeeze inside them. The bag doesn’t come with a diaper changing pad whereas some of the others on the market, do.

The outside pockets designed to hold wet wipes isn’t actually long enough to hold a travel box of wet wipes which is disappointing however you can easily store your wet wipes in another compartment. Overall the Leke Diaper Bag is acceptable quality in comparison to the price and represents true value in a diaper backpack.

Becko 3-In-Multi-functional Diaper Bag

The Becko 3-in-is made of lightweight oxford cloth material and comes complete with stylish quilted detail. It contains every element you’ll need to carry all your baby’s belongings in one convenient location. Plenty of storage is evidenced by a large main compartment, with numerous other pockets to store all your necessary goodies.

Mesh pockets mean you can easily view the contents of each pocket so there will be much less scrambling at critical feeding or changing times. The Becko 3-in-comes with its own padded change pad to make changing little bottoms a breeze.

Bebamour Travel Backpack Diaper Bag

The Bebamour Travel Backpack Diaper Bag is superior in quality and is manufactured in three gender neutral, stylish colors. You can choose from orange, dark yellow or light khaki and this bag is affordable and provides real value in terms of its purchase price.

It has 3-in-functionality in that the adjustable shoulder straps can be packed away out of sight and the bag can be converted into a shoulder or tote style, depending on your needs on any given day. This means you won’t have to change bags for various occasions but can simply convert-and-go which means you’ll save time and money in the long run. It offers the standard inclusions of a waterproof and insulated bottle holding pocket as well as a padded changing mat and straps to clip onto your stroller.
