Charlie OliverHi there, my name is Charlie Oliver and the first thing I would like to say is thanks for stopping by my website. After spending over 45 hours comparing at least 14 reusable ice packs, I am recommending the best reusable ice packs of 2018

I will go through the main features and what you should consider when deciding which one to pick over the other. Now I’m going to recommend a few reusable ice packs you can pick from to get started quickly and easily.

Let’s get to it!

Best reusable ice packs of 2018

I review the three best reusable ice packs on the market at the moment. So, what exactly would anyone want to know about reusable ice packs? I know most of us don’t really care much about the history and the origin, all we want to know is which of them is the best. Of course, I will spare you the history and go straight on to the best reusable ice packs. The rating is based on multiple factors: The 3 metrics ‐ Design, Materials, Performance, and other indicators such as: Popularity, Opinions, Brand, Reputation and more. Many brands have introduced reusable ice packs on the market. These brands have resulted in a variety for the user. These require that the consumers be well aware of what they are buying so as to make the best choice.

Rubbermaid ice pack is one of the best ice packs for food, but they are almost the same price as a Yeti and you do not get any promises as to how long they will stay cold. Most people state that it is great for their lunch box, which only needs to stay cold for a part of the day.

Fit & Fresh Cool Coolers slim lunch ice packs are great for everyday use in a lunch box or a soft sided cooler. The thing is, they may not be what you want if you are out on your boat and truly looking for a way to keep food and drink cold for the entire day.

As you can see, Yeti is not a bad choice; though there are other choices that may have more overall positive reviews. This could be simply because the other ice packs have been around a lot longer. For those who love Yeti, the reviews will not matter. You will simply be interested in the quality that you know comes with the Yeti brand.

How Dog Cooling Vests Work

Dog cooling vests work on the same principle the human body uses to stay cool: evaporation. When a human perspires, the sweat evaporates, taking with it excess body heat. A cooling vest works in much the same way because it contains a special layer of fabric that absorbs and locks in water that evaporates over time, taking the dog’s excess body heat with it. Cooling vests can literally cool a dog from the inside out all day long by pulling excess heat from the dog’s bloodstream and distributing the coolness evenly throughout the body.  The key area to cool on a dog is its chest and neck. This is why the cooling vests and cooling collars work so well to keep your dog cool.

Materials

A key feature of dog cooling vests is their design. Made from highly breathable fabrics like 100 percent cotton, which can hold up to 400 times its weight in water and is non-toxic so it does not cause irritation and is not harmful if chewed, these vests are lightweight and comfortable to wear. The nylon outer layer dries quickly, while the water repellent inner layer keeps Fido nice and dry. It is critical to not trap heat in, but to allow it to escape through the evaporation magic of the inner cotton layer.

Cooling Vest Sizing

Dog cooling vests are designed to fit a dog from its neck to the base of its tail, covering all vital organs. Getting the correct size for your dog is important so the vest is comfortable to wear and provides the cooling effect throughout his body. The most important factor in determining the right size vest for a dog is its girth (the size in inches around the dog’s chest). Proper fit around will ensure proper cooling where it is needed most. The next factor in determining size is the length of the dog’s back. Dog cooling vests are sold in extra small to extra-extra large sizes – determined in inches for the girth of the dog.

Difficult to Fit Dogs

Some dogs, such as bulldogs, might be difficult to fit. Because they are rather large around with large necks and short bodies, it might be necessary to forgo the cooling vest and use a dog cooling pad instead. In addition, some dogs do not like water, so the cooling pad is a good option, as it does not require the use of water to activate its cooling properties. Dog cooling collars are another option for keeping hard to fit dogs comfortable in hot, humid weather.

Dog Cooling Collars

There are two types of dog cooling collars: ones filled with ice and ones that cool through evaporation. The cooling collars filled with ice are placed in the freezer, and when worn, the ice melts and cools down the dog.

The cooling collars and scarves that cool through evaporation work in much the same way as the dog cooling vests. The collar is soaked in cool water and as the water evaporates, it takes the dog’s excess body heat with it. When dog cooling collars are used in combination  such as the Dog Cooling Collar, dogs stay super cool and comfortable in even the hottest temperatures.

Cool Pup Reflective Harness

This unique cooling vest uses water or ice for cooling doggy comfort and contains UVF protection to protect your dog’s skin from the sun. The weight of the vest is determined by the amount of time the vest is soaked in water or how many ice packs are placed inside the coat’s pockets. The ice packs are very small and the vest can be worn with the ice packs or without.  The icepacks are made of a special material that doesn’t get too cold and will not hurt the dog’s skin.  The Cool Pup Reflective Harness is perfect for humid climates.

YETI ICE Refreezable Reusable Cooler Ice Pack

The YETI ICE Refreezable Reusable Cooler Ice Pack is the most durable ice pack on our list for best ice packs for coolers.  The claim?  The word on the street is this ice pack is break-resistant.  So, feel free to take it for a tumble-down the mountainside or throw it off a cliff.

This ice pack comes in your choice of sizes:  lb:  inches x 2.62inches x 1.62inches, lb:  inches x 5.37inches x 1.62inches, lb:  10.7inches x inches x 1.62inches.

While the majority of consumers seem happy overall with the YETI ICE Cooler Ice Pack, some consumers have been unimpressed with its performance.  In particular, the length of time this ice pack stays frozen.  However, other consumers say that when paired with ice, it works fantastic.  And, a quality cooler can also help keep this ice pack frozen for longer.

Cooler Shock Cooler Freeze Packs

This pack, extra-large bundle uses gel to speed up the freezing action and keep it colder for longer.  The Cooler Shock Cooler Freeze Packs will reach a cooling point of 1degrees Fahrenheit.

And, to further ensure the longevity of the cooling point, these 7.milliliter thick packs have layers of foil and nylon.

To use, all you need to do is add water to the CS Dry Mix in the pouch.  Then you can either zip & iron it shut or use the screw cap to seal it shut.

Some consumers found adding water to the CS Dry Mix was a little messy.

Arctic Ice Chillin Brew Series Reusable Cooler Pack

This particular ice pack comes in different sizes.  Choose between.7lb, 1.lb, 2.lb or lb.  Additionally, it comes in your choice of a multitude of colors.

The Arctic Ice Chillin Brew Series Reusable Cooler Pack is filled with all natural liquid derived from vegetable oils and animal food stocks.  And, in the rare instance of leakage, this liquid is biodegradable and non-toxic.  Additionally, the active ingredient inside this cooler pack has been tested to handle up to 1,000 freeze and thaw cycles.

This ice pack pictured above measures 10.92inches x 8.66inches x 1.8inches.  But, like we mentioned previously, it comes in other size options.

Rubbermaid Blue Ice Block

This pick for best ice packs for coolers is filled will non-toxic gel to keep items cooler for longer.  The Rubbermaid Blue Ice Block is reusable and will stay frozen for longer than just plain ice.

The Rubbermaid Blue Ice Block measures 3.inches x 1.inches x 6.inches and comes in your choice of a 1, 2, or pack.

According to consumers, this ice pack keeps things cool for a long period of time, with some consumers claiming it lasts up to 1hours.

A couple of consumers have had this icepack leak while in the cooler.  Additionally, the Rubbermaid Ice Block has a tendency to sweat.  To avoid a possible mishap or sweat, keep the ice block in a plastic zip-lock bag.

Rubbermaid Iceolater Reusable Ice Pack

Our last pick for ice packs for coolers is one that can double as a divider.  The Rubbermaid Marine Ice Chest is specially made to fit in the Rubbermaid Gott Marine Cooler.  However, if you already have a cooler, this ice chest will work in most 150 quart coolers.

The Rubbermaid Iceolater Reusable Ice Pack is FDA approved and works by filling with water and freezing.

This Ice pack measures 15.92inches x 13.980 inches x 2.150 inches.

With the right cooler, this works great for keeping items cold.  And, because it also works as a divider, it helps to keep items organized.

Additionally, the Rubbermaid Iceolater Reusable Ice Pack is a durable option that will withstand some abuse.

Drain Water on Long Trips But Not on Short Ones

The guides I spoke with don’t drain the cooler water on short trips because it keeps items like beer extra cold. But the water also makes the remaining ice melt faster, so if you’re trying to preserve your blocks for the next seven days, you’ll need to drain your cooler a couple times each day.

Don’t Trust Food Packaging

It’s happened to most of us: you resealed the tortilla bag before putting it back in the cooler, only to find a bunch of soggy mash when you went in for breakfast. I always take my food out of its original packaging and put it in Ziploc bags or Tupperware before a trip to prevent this very mishap. This also cuts down on trash once you’re at camp. Pro tip: wrap your greens in wet paper towels before sticking them in bags. It will help them stay crisp longer.

Down-to-Feather Ratio

Many manufacturers are now treating their down with hydrophobic compounds that certainly make them better at dealing with moisture (more on that later). But at the end of the day, synthetic insulation is king at staying warm when wet, since it won’t lose its structure, even if it isn’t quite as good at retaining heat. Legendary alpinist Steve House obsesses about traveling light expeditions, but will add ounces—sometimes pounds—of excess weight to his kit by bringing synthetic jackets and sleeping bags. “If I’m going to be overnight or on an expedition, I am going to go synthetic,” House said. He used a synthetic Patagonia Das Parka to guide in places like Denali and Chamonix since the nineties, long before he was sponsored by the company.

Ethical Concerns

There are plenty. Due to the fact that down is a bi-product of the of the goose and duck meat industry, and given that the vast majority of the down manufacturers are using is from far away places like China and Eastern Europe, it’s extremely difficult to keep track of how those ducks and geese are being treated before and during their slaughter.

Down-Synthetic Hybrids

Some materials companies (like synthetic insulation pioneer Primaloft) have combined synthetics with down in an effort to create a best of both worlds combo of warmth, weight, and water-repellency. This method involves actually intertwining hydrophobic-treated down with synthetic fills. The jury’s still out on these types of fills, and I haven’t used very many of them myself.

Tendons and ligaments

Important structures in your horse’s legs get very hot during extreme exercise and it is important to cool them down quickly to keep them tight and strong. Plus, any injuries occurred also need to be cooled as soon as possible to avoid further damage and excessive swelling. There are many products available that aim to cool these structures such as clays, therapy boots, ice bandages and wraps. If you are at a competition, you might not have access to ice or a freezer so water-cooled boots are good way to go. Also, while clay can be left on overnight, straight ice or a simple ice pack should not be directly applied to your horse’s coat, so here are some ways to deliver this sort of cold leg therapy effectively. Plus products containing ingredients such as salts, arnica, witch hazel and other natural minerals which can help provide added relief.

Absorbine Bigeloil leg wraps

These wraps offer a quick and easy alternative to the mess of using traditional clay while providing the same cooling and soothing benefits. Kaolin clay powder and Epsom salts are encased in porous quilted pockets, which are activated when immersed in water. The wraps are then simply bandaged on to the leg. We think these are particularly useful at competitions as all you need to do is add water, avoiding extra mess and stress.

Neo Ice Cold treatment bandage

A reusable self-cooling compression bandage that cools for up to two and a half hours to help reduce swelling and pain in tendons, muscles and ligaments. The Neo Ice bandages can be applied immediately and be re-used approximately 20 times. We think these would be a great asset to your equine first aid kit or used at a three-day event after running cross-country to help keep your horse comfortable.

Cold bars use one of two cooling methods: ice or refrigeration. The one you will choose depends largely on where you will be using the equipment. If your cold well will always be used near a power source, refrigeration may be the best option for you. However, if you will be moving your cold bar around or would like to avoid using electricity, there are plenty of ice-cooled cold food bars to choose from.

If you decide to go with an ice-cooled cold well, you will have a few options to choose from. The most common type just uses an ice-filled well to keep food cool. Some companies offer ice packs to use in place of loose ice, which can make cleanup simpler. Another option is chilled food pans, which are frozen ahead of time, then filled with food to hold temperature for long periods of time.

If you choose to go with refrigeration, you will need to decide where your compressor will be located. If the compressor is located on the end of the cold bar, you will not be able to place another bar flush against that end. A compressor located on the front will blow warm air toward customers, while one located on the back will add heat to the working area, or again at customers on double-sided bars. For a cold food bar that will be stationary, a remote condenser may be the best option. These are more expensive to install, but prevent extra noise and heat being added to the serving area.

There are several sizes of cold bars to choose from. Countertop models range from small trays filled with ice to large cold wells that can hold multiple food pans. Countertop models are all ice-cooled. Another option is a drop-in cold food bar, which can be ice-cooled or refrigerated. These are permanently installed into a counter by lowering the equipment into a cut-out sized to the bar’s specifications. Refrigerated drop-in models require extra clearance for the compressor under the counter, while ice-cooled models will need a drain or drain hose.

For foodservice operations with more room, or no counters to work with, a floor model cold bar may work best. These units are available in both ice-cooled and refrigerated options, and most come on casters to simplify relocating and cleaning.

Pupsik Studio

WHAT This was created to store both bottles and breast pumps in one cooler bag. Two compartments let you stash all sorts of accessories and pump parts, while a waterproof, dirt-resistant outer layer makes it durable and easy to maintain. The fully insulated inner padding keeps milk cold for up to hours.

Mum’s Fairy

WHAT Spacious and versatile, this carrier is a discreet way to carry all the equipment you need to express your milk. You can carry by hand, use the shoulder sling, as a backpack, or attach it to your stroller. Made from a strong, long-lasting material, it boasts a waterproof and insulated lining.

PARENTS SAY You’ll enjoy easy access to the contents, especially when you’re busy with your baby, thanks to the wide opening. It’s also large enough to hold most breast pumps and all its parts. Though the design is very basic, we like the versatility offered by the different ways in which we can carry it.

Mothercare

WHAT Simply collapse the cooler bag, pop it into the freezer for hours and it’s ready to use! Fits six bottles ― the tote handle makes it easy to carry around. The built-in cooling panels will keep your milk chilled for 1hours.

PARENTS SAY You don’t have to deal with ice packs or messy condensation with this spacious cooler bag. Although it’s expensive, you know you’re paying for something reliable. You can easily use it to transport food and drinks for outings and picnics when your pumping days are over.

Agape Babies

Pumping mums will love this portable BPA-free cooler set that will keep your breastmilk cool and safe. Comes with four Medela storage milk bottles ― very handy! ― and a contoured ice pack.

PARENTS SAY This is probably the cooler bag you’ll want to go for if you are using a Medela pump. It’s compact and portable, and the ideal fit for four Medela storage bottles. The ice pack ensures that your bottles of milk won’t go tumbling around the bag. However, some mums wish that it’s slightly bigger, especially the mums who express more than twice a day might find this bag a bit too small.

Who should get this

If you or your kids have a lunch box that is difficult to clean and is beginning to smell a little funky, it’s probably time for a new one. If you’re an adult who works in remote locations, or if you have kids in grades K–12, access to refrigeration for packed lunches is unlikely. A durable, insulated lunch box is a must for holding ice packs and keeping foods at safe temperatures.

Young kids who go to daycare or preschool could benefit from a bento-style lunch box because such designs are easy for caretakers to label, clean, and stack neatly in a crowded refrigerator. Small food storage containers are another great option for parents to easily portion and separate foods for placement inside an insulated lunch box.

How we picked and tested

After researching 50 lunch containers, we tested 1for this guide.

For this guide we tested lunch boxes for both adults and kids, covering insulated lunch boxes, bento boxes, and metal and plastic food storage containers. Regardless of the type of lunch container you use, it should be break-resistant, stain-resistant, and easy to clean and store. Food storage containers should also be leakproof.

Since insulated lunch boxes are intended to keep food cold without refrigeration, they need to be large enough to hold a substantial lunch and multiple ice packs (ideally, they should have a mesh pocket on the interior lid for holding an ice pack in place). A shoulder strap is a must if you’re an outdoor worker, especially if you’re carrying other equipment to a jobsite. Though we had difficulty finding waterproof lunch boxes, an exterior material that’s slow to absorb liquids is a nice feature for keeping rainwater out, especially when you’re working outdoors.

For kids, we looked for insulated lunch boxes that were roomy enough to hold an average-size lunch yet compact enough to fit in a backpack. We tested lunch boxes with mesh pockets on the side, which are convenient for holding additional snacks.

Some parents feel uncomfortable using plastic food storage containers. For this reason, we decided to try a couple of metal containers, which are a good alternative to glass because they weigh less and won’t break. However, they can’t go into a microwave to reheat your lunch, and they aren’t leakproof. (We do recommend several glass options in our guide to the best food storage containers).

Our picks for the best insulated lunch boxes: the L.L.Bean Lunch Box (left) and the Coleman 9-Can Soft Cooler (right).

We also looked for bento-style boxes for young kids and adults that have either separate compartments with individual lids or a single lid that seals the entire box. Bento designs with a single lid need to be airtight to prevent the contents from spilling over the compartment walls and to keep food odors from mingling. Cassie Hollmann, assistant children’s programming director at Citibabes in New York, who works with kids from months to years old, told us, “A good seal might be the most important thing.” A tight seal is especially important for little kids who store their lunches in their backpacks or cubbies. “Many times backpacks, lunch boxes, and shoes end up upside down and haphazardly put away,” Hollmann said.

Some bento boxes, such as the Bentgo Kids Lunch Box, have a single lid that covers individual compartments.

No adult bento boxes did well in our tests. If you prefer packing your lunch in separate compartments, we’ve found that nothing works better than glass or plastic food storage containers.

Care and maintenance

It’s important to keep the contents of a lunch box within an acceptable temperature range for food safety. In an article for Foodsafety.gov, Bridgette A. Keefe writes, “Remember the 2-Hour rule: you must keep hot foods HOT and cold foods COLD.” Perishables last only two hours in temperatures between 40°F and 90°F before they spoil. If the temperature of food is between 90°F and 140°F, perishables will last only about one hour before you need to refrigerate or freeze them. Always keep cold foods under 40°F and hot foods above 140°F. If you or your child don’t have access to a refrigerator, the USDA recommends using two cold packs (larger than by inches each), one above and one below perishable items such as dairy or sandwiches.

Most insulated lunch boxes are not machine washable or dishwasher safe. Manufacturers suggest wiping insulated lunch boxes clean with a mild dish detergent and a damp paper towel. Be sure to dry an insulated lunch box with paper towels or a cloth and leave it open and unzipped to air dry completely before you use it. Your best bet is to clean an insulated lunch box once or twice a week to prevent it from acquiring an unpleasant, off scent.

For difficult stains, such as those from tomato sauce, removing the soiled area may take multiple attempts. If the exterior becomes stained, we recommend cleaning it immediately with a little soap and water for best results.

Most plastic and metal food storage containers are dishwasher safe (top rack only), but always read the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use and care. For some bento boxes with rubber seals around the lid, wash by hand to avoid possible deterioration.

The competition

The Rubbermaid LunchBlox Sandwich Kit 180623is a great storage option for young kids. These containers stack together nicely and lock into a plastic, freezable ice pack, which in our tests kept foods at safe temperatures for nearly four hours. However, since this set is so tall when stacked, it doesn’t fit into shallower lunch boxes like our pick from L.L.Bean.

For young kids, the ECOlunchbox Three-in-One is a nice, compact stainless steel option. The metal containers are easy to clean and dishwasher safe. This lunch box didn’t suffer any dents or permanent damage in our drop tests, but we ruled it out because it’s not leakproof and it’s too small for older kids and adults.

The Ramaka Solutions Insulated Lunch Bag is cheaply made and too big to serve as a lunch bag for a single person. The thin walls of this bag also lack structure, so it sags when fully packed. In our tests the exterior of the bag stained badly with tomato sauce, and the interior lining was difficult to wipe clean. However, a representative from Ramaka Solutions has informed us that this bag is now being made by a new supplier. We’ll consider testing the new bag for our next update.

Because the Herschel Canteen Lunch Pack lacks a handle, it’s inconvenient to hold. In person, the color of this bag is neon orange, as opposed to the rust color depicted on the Herschel website. We found that the inner lining stained easily, and it was difficult to clean.

The Wildkin Lunch Box has an inner lining with a lot of seams that trap crumbs and make cleaning difficult. In our tests the interior stained badly with tomato sauce.

The Bentgo All-in-one Stackable Bento Lunch Box was a pain to use. We had trouble fitting the lids onto the containers, and the plastic cutlery was a nuisance. The elastic band stained badly with tomato sauce and was difficult to remove.

The Bentology Bento Set seems cheaply made. The lids do not fit the bases well (before or after dishwashing), and they’re not leakproof.

The Happy Tiffin Raja Tier Tiffin Lunch Box is too large for a lunch portion; it’s more suitable for bringing to picnics. It’s also a bit tall to fit in a crowded fridge, especially if you’re bringing it to work. It dented in our drop tests.

Mental prep

First, consolidate: pack your purse into your suitcase and cram a makeup bag down one side of the pump bag, and your wallet, keys, and phone down the other side.

Second, you can pack the cooler you’ll use for your milk in your suitcase on the way out, but if you’re going to carry it on (more on this decision below) you have to make room for it on the way home. (A 1-day trip will require a reusable, leak-resistant lunchbag. Up to a week requires a soft-sided 6-pack cooler; this will hopefully hold lots of beer in the future.) Cram this cooler into the top of the pump bag or your other carry-on (no one said the two carry-ons have to look good).

Pump at the airport.

If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ll be in an airport with a Mamava lactation pod. Go there, and thank your lucky stars. Or maybe your airport has a pumping area – less likely, but worth checking out. If you fall into the “none of the above” category, you have a couple of options: if you’re fancy, pump in the executive lounge; or wrap yourself in a shawl and pump in the damn terminal; or commandeer a “family restroom” to pump in. Now, I don’t believe that any woman should be made to pump in a bathroom, but I’m a realist: some women aren’t going to be comfortable pumping out in the open. Don’t let anyone shame you for making your own situation work. If you do end up in the family restroom, do not feel guilty about taking it over for twenty minutes or so: You’re doing this for your family. Just be aware that they are not complete safe havens (nothing really is). Someone will probably pound on the door at some point.

Getting home

When you get to your destination, the frozen milk will probably  be slushy around the edges. I always just say a prayer and throw it back in the freezer. Breast milk is so stable that I just don’t worry about it. If you have a lower comfort level, pour off any liquid milk into bottles to use within the next few days, and put the fully frozen stuff into the freezer.

But if your baby is displaying any of these signs, you should seek urgent medical attention.
