router bit sets Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy router bit sets, right? No!

They can be used for

However a router is pretty useless without router bits. Each bit influences the type of cuts you could achieve, and the quality of the cut, though dependent on your skill and router, is also influenced by the type of bits you use.

Router Cutter Bit Materials

HSS (High Speed Steel). These are carbon steel based bits which are made to resist high temperatures. However several tests over the years have proven that these are nowhere near as long lasting as Carbide Tipped bits.

Carbide Tipped. These are amazingly sharp bits, and certainly superior to HSS bits. However the carbide tips are easy to break as they are brittle. Slated to last nearly twice as long as HSS router bits, carbide tipped bits are slightly more expensive.

Solid Carbide. The most expensive of the lot and not easily available in all brands. However you should consider these especially if you intend on intricate design work.

Rabbetting Router Bits

If you are looking to create a groove where another piece of the project is to fit in, then you need a rabbeting router bit. They usually include a pilot bearing that rotates at the tip. The bearings allow control of the diameters that are being carved out, usually by switching bearing sizes.

Rabetting Router Bit Buying tip: if you plan on a lot of joinery work then try and buy a router bit with a range of diameter bearings as they may be cheaper in a set rather than single diametered bearings.

Flush Trim Router Bits

These are by far the most varied router bits, as they come on many many patterns. The most common is of course the standard straight edge flush bit. These bits are used for flushing or trimming the edge of your projects. They are quite popular for aligning two pieces that need flush edges to fit right.

Edge Forming Router Bits

There are several types of edge forming router bits, most of which are generally used for cutting finishing decorations. Decent edge forming bits usually include a bearing allowing better control. Round over bits and cove bits are good examples of common router bits.

Edge Forming Router Bit Buying tip: aim for at least a medium quality router bit primarily because these would have a bearing. These bits are for finishing projects and as such you want good quality ones.

Freud 91-10Basic Router Bit Set

This router is the best bit for the starter with the woodworker. It has ½ shank bits. It cut the wood with very smooth way. Its carbide is the little harder with the average bitter. It cut in a smooth way in a bit longer shape with many other carbide bits. It has the little faster chip with the misplaced brad nail and some other projects.

It is not a Freud. It shouldn’t have a problem with the work.Instead of power rolling to full haste the second, you opportunity it on, you’ll consume a moment of silence after preliminary it and then the timber router switches to hurry to the predetermined speed. There are numerous styles of routers that have two pulls that are wanted to make bit vicissitudes. Ease of use is imperative, expressly if you have a lot of occupations that need to be complete that take a lengthier time.

It is flattering a much more comprehensive feature that new routers are having additional. Any collet that develops worn spoiled or out of overweight will not give the router bit good hold and can upsurge shaking and run-out. Be sure to use an insignificant brush with self-assurance or nylon spines to get into the close gaps.  Any injured surfaces can be curved out with a figurine housework brush. These are much more compressed and easier to movement than other replicas. This router is faultless for responsibilities that necessitate less size and power. Slim routers are countless for creation one gave cuts that are accurate and precise.

MLCS 83715-Piece Router Bit Set

This router has the save big open box with the 1pieces of the router bits with the product eligibility. It has the high-quality carbide with the set included at the variety of the bit size. It has some folk’s things with the top quality for the each bit. It has the plastic sleeves with the three pull pieces. It has the bit tight with the anti-corrosive goop.

It has the clean goop off alcohol. If you’re novel to woodworking, or just poverty to get into additional progressive work, a wood router is unconditionally indispensable.A router will permit you to resonate out wood exteriors and thin pieces of wainscot to make a perfect match with a surprising amount of comfort. The little Horsepower is a bonus for novices;it will still cut most things you’ll essential a router for and it’s unquestionable not to hover out of your pointers.

Main Features

The YONICA is available with the 70 pieces set and has the professional quality router with the manufacturer quality bits. It has the high-quality lubricants performing the smooth operations. It is fully enclosed with the high quality prevent pitch with the resin build up.A lot of powder can produce by using a router. It is flattering a much more general article that new routers are consuming supplementary.

It works length ways with the router chute that associated to the motorized and the collet nut. Any collet that develops worn injured or out of round will not give the router minute right hold and can upsurge shaking and run-out. Constriction it without a bit in a dwelling can distort the collet, which will, in chance, cause an indecorous fit of the router bit. Housework will be complete by using a soft rag and somewhat like Naphtha.

Any injured exteriors can be round out with a figurine-cleaning encounter. Countless for crafters and hobbyists as well as feature work they are cooler to use for making inside cuts and characteristically weigh about 7-1smackers. The right router, once it is erudite, can help even a beginner create complicated projects and excellence pieces deprived of too much exertion. The last is also likely to previous for extended time to originate. Price is positively an important thought, but try not to go too inexpensive or you’ll impartial end up with jumble.

As the name implies, the edge beading router is for shaping the edges of pieces such as tabletops, chair arms, shelves and any other places that you need to enhance the edge.

This router bit is similar to the round over bit to some extent because it will also apply a rounded shape to the edge of the workpiece. Edge beading bits can cut a quarter or half circle profile which is what woodworkers refer to as a bead.

Ogee Bit

The Roman ogee bit is among the most popular edge shaping bits, and you will find it in almost all woodworking workshops as it is part of most wood router bit sets.

This bit will create a compound, s-shaped profile and it comes in various variations. But the most common ogee bits are those with points in the middle of the profile or shoulders on the edges. And like most other edge bits they will come with a bearing tip.

Glue Joint Bit

The glue joint router bit is a handy type of bit whose primary role is to create a joint in wood to make it possible to connect one piece to the other to form a larger panel.

The most significant advantage of the glue joint bit over other joining systems such as dowels and biscuits is that it creates a large glue area for more adhesion.

Rabbet Bit

It is possible to cut a rabbet with a table saw when using a dado blade or even with a straight cutting bit. However, there is also rabbet router bit which is for this specific purpose.

In definition, a rabbet is just a dado but on the edge of the workpiece. The rabbet router bit will ride along the edge of your stock, and in most instances, it will have a bearing tip.

Raised Panel Bit

There are many router bit types out there, but some like the raised panel are for specific purposes. This router bit is for creating a profiled edge on the smaller door’s panel.

These router bits will often be used with the stile bits to create door panels.

Stile and Rail Bit

Stile and rail bits will also come in handy when making frame assemblies. They are bit types that are used to make frames and the frame assemblies for use in small doors and cabinetry.

And besides, from cutting the panel slot, these bits can also make some decorative profile into the workpiece.

Dovetail Bit

Among the different router bits that you can get the dovetail is among the most famous ones and also one of those that you are likely to use a lot. And it is meant to create tails for the dovetail joinery.

However, you can also use a dovetail bit to make rabbets and tapered dadoes. This router bit will feature a flat bottom that has some angled sides which will be wider at the base.

Round Over Bit

Round over bits are part of the edge forming router bit types. The bit is handy for complex design tasks, and they will in most cases be used for creating smooth, even curves to create a rounded edge of a particular radius on the workpiece.

This bit has a ball bearing for controlling the width of the cut, and it will be useful for shaping the edges of bookshelves, tabletops and any other place where you would like to round over a sharp edge for decorative purposes.

Flush Trim Bit

A flush trim is a must have if you tend to work with wood veneer or plastic laminate a lot. The flush trim bit is a straight-cutting bit whose main aim is to trim any overhanging material flush to the workpiece.

It uses a ball-bearing pilot which is what makes it ideal for flush cutting and it will be a handy bit when making tabletops, cabinet, and drawer faces.

Cove Bit

The cove bits are in essence the opposite of the round over bit, and instead of just rounding over the edge of the stock it also cuts a concave radius on the same edge.

The result that you get when using the cove bit is a decorative edge that will enhance the appearance of a cabinet door or furniture legs.

Not as durable as the high end and expensive sets

This 13-piece router bit set by CMT is the priciest item our reviews. But it is worth every buck you spend on it as it comes with different router bits for a variety of applications and all feature a top-notch construction.

These bits feature high-density chrome carbide cutting edges that ensures you always get a long-lasting performance as the bits maintain a sharp tip for a long time.

Some of the bits have an anti-kickback design to provide safety and also make them more comfortable to use. Also, others have a bearing to make template task easy.

Like the MLCS set, this one will also come with a unique and highly durable hardwood case to make it easy to store and organize your router bits.

Relatively expensive router bit set

While it is always a good idea to have as many bits in the workshop as possible sometimes it is not necessary since many woodworkers always end up using just a few of them.

What this means is that this 7-piece basic router bit set can still work just fine for you as it comes with all the commonly used bits.

And besides from the set including the most useful router bits all are also sturdy and highly durable thanks to the premium carbide construction.

The bits also feature a precision grinding design that provides excellent balance even at high speeds. And when you buy these 1/2-inch shank bits you will also get a small, durable case for convenient storage.

What you can do with a router

Routers excel at cutting grooves and offer a stable base, the ability to adjust the bit (depth of cut) up or down and the ability to install bits of different sizes and shapes. This combination allows almost limitless potential for removing material in a controlled way.

A router is great for cutting the tails of a dovetail joint, tongue-and-groove joints, mortises and tenons. There are many more uses than I could possibly list here, so look around for articles in magazines and books about cutting joinery with routers.

The Triton has great features like comfortable handles, speed adjustment and easy access to the power switch.

Large routers

Large routers come with 1.7to 3.2HP motors. This may not sound like a lot, but they are incredibly powerful machines. Large routers are great for removing lots of material and lend themselves to use with a router table, turning a router into a shaper.

The upside of a large router is that it is powerful enough to remove lots of material with accuracy and efficiency without bogging down. The downside is that it can be unwieldy because of its size and weight.

If you are rounding the edge of a small piece of wood, a large router is overkill. One other benefit is that large routers accept bits with shanks that are ½” in diameter. They often come with replaceable collets that also allow you to use bits with ¼” diameter shanks.

Turn the router upside down and mount it in a router table to turn it into a shaper.

Small routers

Small routers are also known as trim or laminate routers. They got that name because of their job of cutting edge banding flush to pieces of plywood in constructing cabinets. They come with motors in the to 1.2HP range.

The upside of a small router is that it is light enough to be easy to use, especially for detail work like chamfering an edge. The downside is that it lacks the power to remove lots of material. They also accept bits with smaller shafts, usually ¼” in diameter. These bits can break if too much is demanded of them.

Plunge bases

Many routers, both large and small, now come with a plunge base either as an attachment or built in. A plunge base allows you to cut a groove that starts and/or stops inside the edges of a board. For example, if you want to cut a mortise right in the center of a board, you can position the router at the beginning of the cut, plunge the bit the desired depth into the board, move it the desired distance, then raise the bit. This will cut the mortise without cutting the surrounding material. A plunge base will help anytime you want some kind of interrupted cut.

Ripping? Yes, ripping. One of the reasons I’ll choose a router over a circular or table saw when I can’t have both. Although not as quick, with a straight edge guiding the router one can rip boards to width.

Yep, cross cutting can also be done with the right bit and a guide to ensure a straight cut.

Cutting Hanging Slots

Wooden projects to be hung on the wall need some sort of hanger. Many folks buy metal hangers and use those, but if you want a shadow box to fit flush and secure against the wall, then cutting hanging slots in the back is the way to go.

Surfacing Wood

With a surfacing jig and a straight cutting bit one can actually surface wood to thinner thicknesses. Although not as fast as using a surfacer this technique is great for the woodworker that has neither the space or cash for a surfacer.

Factors That Make A Router A Good One

Cost is always something to consider when buying a power tool, but the cheaper the tool, the more likely it is to not hold up. When you can, pay for a known brand, and buy a bit more than you think you’ll need.

Motors are the backbone of a router, the smaller the motor the harder it will work when cutting oak, walnut, and other dense woods. Buy as much horsepower as you can afford.

The body and frame of most routers are the same as most modern power tools, polymer and metal components. The more metal the router has, the tougher it will be.

Collets hold the bits and a router that has both 1/2” and 1/4” will be much more versatile that one that has only one of the two. You’ll be better off buying a router with both.

Additional features and accessories make a purchase that much better. Although not totally necessary, a variable-speed motor is a plus for adjusting the speed to bit sizes. Another great add on is a carry/storage case, as are guides for straight cuts and such.

Router bits made from high-speed steel are usually intended for use with softer materials. This arises from the fact that this material is the softest of the three materials- so it can’t maintain its edge like the other two materials below.

Unsurprisingly, bits made from high-speed steel are more affordable.

I’d recommend these bits to folks who are just looking for bits to use for recreational purposes, or those who use the routers occasionally.

Carbide Tip

Carbide is quite stronger than high-speed steel. It’s used to design the cutting edge of bits (that is, the carbide tip).

Unlike the above material, the carbide tip can maintain its edge for much longer, plus it can successfully cut harder woods and metal. For this reason, I’d recommend carbide tip bits to all professional woodworkers who use their routers on a regular basis.

However, you’ll need to spend more bucks for these bits. But this is a non-issue, considering that you’ll get something that lasts for much longer while handling its intended job perfectly well.

Solid Carbide

If you’re looking for the strongest and the most durable bits to use with your wood router, go for the solid carbide models.

Such bits allows you to handle heavy dust jobs on the hardest materials you can think of. Their edges remain functional for longer, allowing you to use them for more extended periods of time.

The profile is the term used to describe the shape of the cutting edge of bits. The ideal shape for you depends on your work needs or what you want to achieve with your wood router.

Straight Bits

As the most popular and most used router bit profile in all workshops, straight bits allows you to cut straight into your material to form a dado (the name for a shallow groove cut that will enable you to join another wood to your workpiece).

Such a cut has many numerous explanations, which explains the reason for the popularity of this bit profile.

Keep in mind the bits come in a variety of diameters and lengths to suit your specific wood cutting needs.

Flush-Trim Bits

From its name, it’s to tell what these bits do. They excellently trim the edge of a given material flush such that it matches the edge of an edge of another one.

The bits are usually guided by a pilot bearing that has the same diameter as the cutting section. The bearing can be located at the tip or the base of the bit.

Rabbeting Bits

These bits are also self-explanatory, just by looking at their name. They’re intended for cutting a rabbet (or a shoulder, if I may) on the edge of your workpiece. As an experienced woodworker, you know that a rabbet finds great usage in connecting pieces together.

Like the previous bits, rabbeting bits are also guided using a pilot bearing that spins at the tip. Because they come in a set comprising bearings of different diameters, they allow you to create rabbets of your preferred size.

Molding Bits

Like the edge-forming bits, molding bits come with a taller design and feature a variety of profiles that help you complete the edges of a molding.

However, ensure you use these bits ONLY when your router is mounted on a table for safety reasons.

Router Bit Material

There are different materials from which Router Bits are made: High Speed Steel, Carbide Tipped, and Solid Carbide. Choosing a carbide Router Bit over a high steel router bit is usually your best bet to get the most for your money.

High Speed Steel Router Bits are generally the least expensive and are fine for softwood and light plastics, but tend to dull much faster than carbide.

Carbide Tipped Router Bits are usually more expensive than the high speed steel router bits, but they stay sharper longer and work better in hardwoods and other hard materials, so they may save you money in the long run.

Solid Carbide Router Bits are the most expensive, but are typically meant for specific applications where other router bits may not perform as well. You may want to choose a Solid Carbide Router Bit for Mortising, Laminate Trimming, and Pattern Cutting.

If you have already tried searching for a router lift, you will know that there is not just one unified lift. There are different kinds made by different companies so you will have to expect that each product has their own features providing their own kind of convenience, especially when adjusting the router. Some routers would not have cranks making it easier, other allows its users to set up the router by just lifting it. There are even some models that do not need you to change its fence. It is safe to say, however, that the more convenience you get, the pricier it will be so better make sure you get one with enough convenience that fits your budget. You may do can do a general check on the router lift itself as well. Check every part and see that they are placed together especially the area for mounting.

Sometimes people can even make the simple mistakes. Not all router lifts will fit all routers, of course. Make sure you remember the size of your router when buying the router lift. These lifts will also have to fit the table. For reference, there are common plate sizes and 1/inches by 1and 3/inches, and 1/inches by 13/inches.

JessEm has continually produced quality router lifts which have caught the eye of many woodworkers and has raised standards to a new high whenever they develop a new tool. This list even features of them with all of them sure to be of great quality. Ironically, just to put it out there already, some of them are ironically not made for table tops from JessEm. Nevertheless, the Mast-R Lift II 0212is for a plate-sized 1/inches by 13/inches. It features a cam locking system which is only available to few and a double-sealed bearing construction. It is made from solid aluminum which is hard anodized and remembering what was mentioned in the above paragraphs, router lifts made of aluminum will have great durability.

This is the most expensive router lift on the list but many of the router lifts available in the market are relatively high-priced anyway. But you will definitely find getting a Mast-R Lift II 0212to be a great investment. This allows you to adjust the router bit height easily and even perfectly for your needs. The gliding is intentionally made ultra smooth. You can even level it without having the need to buy any extra parts online. If you have any of the common table tops, this could be a great choice since it fits these easily.

The adjusting and leveling of the router bits were made super easy because of the smooth glide it provides. Its cam-locking system makes a big difference when compared to other router lifts.

It can still be too expensive for many people since there may be other options that are cheaper while only sacrificing only minimal quality. Some parts may be missing in the package. Few users suggest that there should have been pulling down screws at every corner.

Unlike the 02121, the product package has every tool needed for the setup. It is extra sturdy so you know that it would not break easily since woodworking materials would generally get a beating. It is also the bit cheaper than the previous JessEm product mentioned while still giving the same quality.

While it is a bit cheaper, there may be other cheaper products that can give almost the same quality. Although the whole thing would not break easily, some parts may seem quite off. Lastly, the customer service for JessEm is not that great so expect this when dealing with the other router lifts listed here as well.

Moving away from JessEm, Bench Dog Tools makes it to the list as one of the best router lifts. When using router lifts in general, the strong vibration can cause back driving. However, with this router lift by Bench Dog Tools, it features a bronze pre-load nut that helps in preventing this from happening. Its direct-drive lead screw would not get blunt or sloppy the longer use as it is self-cleaning. That is definitely better than your usual belts, chains, and gear. Instead of the usual sleeves of other router lifts, this one uses twin ball bearings to support the router’s weight. Plate measures 8-1/4-Inch by 11-3/4-Inch.

If you have the Bench Dog router tables, then this will definitely be must a buy for you. Additionally, if you have the Bosch 161or 1618, Dewalt 610, 61or 618, and Porter Cable 890 or 690, you can purchase the 40-00ProLift adapter and the 40-00adapter for the Akita RF 1100 or 1101.

The ProLift 40-150 is powerful enough for large panel cutters. It also features a speed control where you can change the speeds at different variables. The build of the router lift is great and its height can easily stay put once you set it. This fits perfectly if you get the older versions of the Porter Cable 751If you get the one from 201and later, you can read about them below.

The plastic insert can be a bit of a problem if you decide to get this router lift. This is especially if you pair this with Rockler Porter Cable 7518, as I have mentioned above. Apparently, the company has changed the configuration of this that only plastic inserts can be used. Doing this changed the size of the hole making it hard for the Porter Cable 751to fit through it.

Kreg Pocket Hole Jig

Next to the roundover, the chamfer might be the second most popular bit for simple edge details in cabinet and furniture projects. A chamfer is a simple angle, usually 4degrees, cut into the edge of a piece. For a factory-made look, you can route a 1/16” to 1/8” chamfer in the edges of your furniture. A bigger chamfer (3/8”) looks nice in a face frame for an entertainment center or armoire. You’ll get a lot of use out of a basic collection of chamfer bits with angles between 11.2degrees and 4degrees.

Cove Bits

A roundover bit produces a convex profile in the edge of a board, but a cove does the opposite. Coves, or concave profiles, are often routed into the edges of doors, drawer fronts and face frames. Just like roundover bits, cove bits come in a variety of sizes, starting around 1/8”. A good set of three or four bits up to ½” should take care of all your cove routing needs.

Router Bits for Joinery

Joinery is the heart of woodworking, and a router is the perfect tool for making all kinds of joints. From dovetails to lap joints, the router can do it all, if you have the right bits. A half dozen bits should be all you need to make just about any joint.

Straight Bit

A straight bit is about as simple as a router bit can be. It usually has two straight cutting edges and is excellent for all kinds of joinery work. In a portable router, you can use a straight bit and jig to produce rabbets, lap joints, tenons, mortises, dados, box joints and more. When set in the router table, the straight bit can even function as a jointer to straighten the edges of crooked boards. No bit is quite as versatile as this one, so it’s a must-have. You’ll want a few different sizes, from ¼” diameter up to at least ½”. For lap joints and work that requires the removal of large amounts of material, go even bigger (think ¾”). There are myriad jigs and accessories that will help you get more out of your straight bits.

Dovetail Bits

What woodworker doesn’t love a good dovetail joint? It’s an attractive way to join parts for cabinets, furniture and drawers. Dovetails can be any width, but are often ½” in drawer parts and wider in cabinet components. The angle on a dovetail bit can vary, but 1degrees is common. You can use a dovetail bit with a special jig to make dovetailing easy, and you can find several different jigs for this purpose. It’s good to have a few different diameters and angles, so look for a set that has a few bits and experiment to find the bit you’ll end up using most.

Lock Miter Bits

To build small boxes, furniture legs or columns with solid wood, nothing compares to the lock miter bit. It produces interlocking parts with plenty of glue surface. This bit can be tricky to set up, and you’ll have to route half of your parts on edge, but once you get the hang of how a lock miter bit works, you’ll use it often. Several manufacturers make lock miter bits, but they all function the same way. A few companies sell setup block with their bits, which make a much easier job of getting things right the first time. Almost all lock miter bits will handle material up to ¾” thick, and you should get one with a ½” shank.

Rabbeting Miter Bit

Lock miter joints are strong in solid stock, but they don’t work as well in plywood or MDF. The little fingers on the joint tend to break in these materials, so a rabbet miter joint is a better choice. A rabbet miter joint is probably just what you think it is, a miter joint with a rabbet. Unlike the lock miter, you’ll need two bits to produce this joint, and they’re usually sold together. You install the smaller bit in your router table and route half of your stock. Then, you install the larger bit and route the second half. The result is a self-aligning joint with a lot of glue surface. Look for a rabbeting miter joint bit set that includes a setup block; the setup can be fussy.

Rabbeting Bit

A rabbet is essentially a small step in the edge of a board, and it’s a detail that most woodworkers need to create from time to time. You can buy rabbeting bits in different diameters, or purchase one bit with a number of bearings that will allow you to make rabbets in several sizes with the same cutter. A decent rabbeting bit will make rabbets up to ½” wide.

Flush Trimming Bit

After the straight bit, the flush trimming bit has to be the most useful bit you’ll ever own. It allows you to trim a piece of wood flush with another, and is great for template routing. You can route exact copies of a template with a flush trimming bit.

Cabinetmakers use these bits to trim the overhang on face frames flush with cabinet end panels. You should have these bits with ¼” and ½” shanks with matching cutter diameters for maximum flexibility.

V Groove Bit

You can make your own signs with attractive lettering using a v groove bit, which has a cutter that comes to a sharp point at the tip. V groove bits are available with different cutter angles, and it’s helpful to have 45, 60 and 90 degree bits.

Freud 97-150 Piece Door Router Bit Set
