When it comes to charging a car battery, faster isn’t necessarily better, especially since charging at a high amperage can cause off-gassing, or worse, battery explosion. Fortunately, you can always buy a trickle charger to keep all your battery-related blues at bay.
How to Trickle a Car Battery
Prior to connecting any cable, set the appropriate amperage and voltage for your car battery. Then, turn to your alligator clips and look for the red and black clips.
The red clip, which is the positive cable, should be connected to your battery’s positive terminal, while the negative clip, which represents the negative cable, must be connected to the ground location. Make sure the negative wire is solidly attached to the ground location before you plug your car charger. Similarly, refrain from touching any of the wires once the charger is already plugged as doing so can result to shock or injury.
How Does a Car Battery Charger Work
However, not all battery chargers are created equal. While the more innovative chargers use a lower and gentler “charge” or electric current to eliminate chances for over or undercharging, the cheapest ones distribute a constant current or voltage regardless of the energy level of the battery, consequently leading to either over or undercharging.
Charging AGM Deep Cycle Batteries
One of the leading advantages of AGM deep cycle batteries is these batteries can be charged times faster than flooded deep cycle batteries of the same amp-hour rating. AGM batteries are the most common battery type used in marine applications.
However, unlike flooded batteries, AGM batteries are sensitive to overcharging and they also do not like heat. Therefore, if your deep cycle battery is AGM, choosing the best charger would be a bit more complicated.
A charge to 2.40V/cell (and higher) is fine. However, the float charge should be reduced to between 2.2and 2.30V/cell (summer temperatures may require lower voltages). A battery charger that is dedicated to charging 12V flooded lead acid often have a fixed float voltage setting of 14.40V (2.40V/cell), using it could overcharge the AGM battery.
To protect and maximize the life of your AGM battery, you should select a multi-stage charger that has a setting for AGM. And because AGM batteries can be fully charged very quickly, we would highly recommend that you buy a charger that has max charge current less than 25Ah.

Charging Gel Deep Cycle Batteries

The 12V DC output is usually limited to around amps, the voltage can fluctuate and is not suited to effectively charge your deep cycle battery.

If you’re looking for the easiest option for keeping your rechargeable batteries full, we recommend the Panasonic Advanced Individual NiMH Battery Charger, which comes with four Eneloop batteries. This simple device doesn’t require any setup and starts charging your batteries accurately as soon as you plug them in. It can charge a single battery (AA or AAA) if need be, unlike some comparable units, which require at least two batteries to work properly.
The BC-700 displays the status of each battery position on a small LCD and allows you to independently select between three charging speeds.
The Lacrosse BC-700 will help anyone that wants to actively manage their batteries squeeze out every drop of power without adding superfluous features and breaking the bank like the top-of-the-line Powerex WizardOne—but it still costs about twice as much as the Panasonic charger. The BC-700 is based on the same pulsed charging and Negative Delta V detection as the Panasonic above, so you know it’s an accurate, automatic charger. But while the Eneloop charger does everything behind the scenes, the BC-700 displays the status of each battery position on a small LCD and allows you to independently select between three charging speeds as well as a variety of testing and maintenance modes. For most people, the repeated button presses needed to sort through these features will just make rechargeable batteries seem like a chore, but the work can help eke out slightly longer lives and marginally increased capacity if you’re willing to invest the time.
Smart chargers with room for more than four batteries are hard to find, but if you need the extra space, we recommend the Powerex MH-C800S, which can charge any combination of eight AAs and AAAs at a time. If you use a lot of batteries, the Powerex MH-C800S is worth paying extra for. But you should only get it if you really need all eight charging slots from one outlet, since it typically costs about twice as much as the Panasonic.
Unlike the Lacrosse BC-700, the MH-C800S only offers two charging speeds and displays a simple three-bar battery gauge instead of detailed charging information. Plus, it costs around twice the price as our simple pick from Panasonic. We also don’t like that the charger defaults to the faster 1-A charging mode, but a clearly labeled “Soft” button will slow that down to a 500-mA rate, which you should do every time to maximize the number of recharges your batteries can take.
We passed over the Powerex/Maha Energy MH-C9000 WizardOne Charger-Analyzer. It’s a feature-packed tinkerer’s dream, allowing you to select charge rates up to 2,000 mA at 100-mA increments, and it combines charge and discharge speeds for testing and conditioning—which is why we used it for our own testing for our upcoming rechargeable AA batteries guide. Its display is larger than the Lacrosse units, but it also requires longer button sequences to display info or set up charging profiles. So while it can do more, it also takes longer to do the things you’d normally want to do. Plenty of users swear by this charger, and even those that don’t will admit it’s extremely capable. For most people, though, the extra cost is going to net them extra frustration instead of extra practical features.
Lacrosse also makes a higher-end and lower-end charger in addition to the BC-700, but neither strike us as good a balance of value and usability. The smaller, less expensive BC-500 has a less intuitive one-button interface, doesn’t show as much information, and most importantly, doesn’t have selectable charging currents, instead sticking with 500 mA–the high end of what most experts recommend. Aside from included accessories, the biggest feature gained from moving up to the higher end BC-1000 is incredibly high speed charging. It allows for 1-A charging across all positions, as well as 1.5- and 1.8-A charging for two batteries—all settings we strongly recommend against using since doing so will significantly lower the number of recharges your battery can take.
The Maximal Power FC9Universal Rapid Charger is a large unit that will charge not only NiMH batteries, but also Nickel Cadmium (Ni-CD), Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese (RAM), and (the manufacturer claims) some non-rechargeable alkalines. (This last use is not generally recommended for safety reasons.) Even setting that aside, it offers some of the same control features as our Lacrosse BC-700 pick but with less information monitoring. The Lacrosse is the smaller, more reliable choice.
Like the Maximal unit, the Xtar VCcharges more than just NiMH batteries, also recharging Li-ion 18650 style batteries. These types of rechargeable Li-ion batteries are different from their disposable AA lithium replacements because they have higher voltages required by specific gear, most often camera equipment, and can destroy low voltage gear expecting AA power. The VChas a clear display, multi-stage charging, and selectable current levels. But it doesn’t offer the capacity discharge and recharge test of our Lacrosse pick, and even with a decently powerful USB power supply, some users report power bottlenecks.
Based on specifications, the Foxnovo F-4S is a competent multi-current charger but has a slower, single-button interface to cycle through all the modes. Many users complained about how loud the alert is every time the device finishes a function. No one wants to be woken up at a.m. because their batteries are ready.
Both the Poweradd 903A 4-bay High-Speed Intelligent Battery Charger and the EasyAcc 4-slot AA AAA Battery Charger (now discontinued) are inexpensive and seem as simple as our top pick. But the good user reviews are mostly courtesy of free samples, and we’re not as sure of charging technique and internal logic as we are our pick from Panasonic. If we get more hands-on time, we’ll take a closer look.
The Avalon Battery Charger With Ultra-speed Technology looks and is priced similarly to our pick, but most of the positive reviews we’ve seen have been written in exchange for sample products.

NUMBER OF CHARGING BAYS
You will need to choose between a single bay, 2-bay, 4-bay, or 6-bay charger. The choice depends upon how many batteries you will need to charge at once. I only see a single bay charger as being useful as an emergency charger for the office or car. Many will get by easily with just a 2-bay charger. If you anticipate going through more than two batteries a day, choose a 4-bay charger. If you anticipate using more than four batteries a day, a 6-bay charger would seem to be ideal.
ODD BATTERY SIZES
All listed chargers here will charge an 18650 battery. However, some may not charge some of the less popular sizes like 14500, 16340, 18350, 18500, or 26650. If you use this size battery, make sure the charger you are considering will accept it.

Selecting the Right Amperage
Charging ports on battery packs, like charging ports on wall-warts and computers, can provide electricity at two amperage rates: 1A and 2.1A. All USB devices can use both ports, but if a device can only handle 1A of power then it will automatically limit itself to 1A on a 2.1A port and if a 2.1A device is on a 1A port it will also charge (but at a much slower rate). Both of our test devices feature a 1A and a 2.1A port.
Another “smart” charger feature is trickle charge. Basically, if you leave your batteries in the charger after they are done charging, the trickle charge feature will top up the charge periodically so that the batteries will still be at a full charge when you remove them.
Need to run out the door? Quick charge is a feature which will charge up your batteries using a high burst of power. So instead of waiting several hours, you might wait just 1minutes. The charge will not last as long as a slow charge, but it can be very handy in a hurry.
LCD display or indicator lights
The best smart chargers include indicator lights or LCD displays which inform you about the charging progress.
La Crosse Technology BC700: Smart Charge Capable from La Crosse offers a highly efficient, totally safe way to power up your rechargeables when they’re running low on juice. Like many modern battery chargers, the BC700 is “trickle charge” capable. In other words, its intelligent internal electronics deliver just the right amount of electricity into your batteries.
Versatility. This charger can fill up double A, triple A, nickel–metal hydride and nickel-cadmium batteries.
Surge resistant. An MCU electrical safeguard kicks in if it detects any kind of unusual voltage pattern.

Choosing the right battery for your car
First off, you need to find the right battery for your car; a quick look at the owner’s manual will help here, while the internet is a valuable resource. Many suppliers’ websites will allow you to enter your registration number and then tell you which battery is correct. Plus, if you shop around online, you’ll have a good chance of finding a great deal and you won’t need to lug a heavy battery home from the accessory shop or garage.
Disconnecting your old battery
Slide the new battery into the cage and reverse the process, connecting the positive terminal first, then the negative. You’ll now need to reset any electricals inside the car – from clocks to stereo to sat-nav. If your car has stop/start, the battery will need to be tuned with the on-board computer, which is why fitting an ECM or AGM battery is probably a job for a professional.
Care for your car battery
Now that you’ve splashed out on a new battery, you want to protect your investment, and the latest chargers have sophisticated programmes to maintain the level of charge. They’re especially useful if you only use your car sparingly – classic car owners swear by these products.
These smart chargers vary the current they pump into the battery to prolong its life. They can even be left attached to a car for long periods of time, and just top the battery up gently. Plus, if your battery is showing signs of being on its last legs, one of these products might be worth a try first; a smart charger can bring a dying battery back to life.
Emergency jump starting
Like many things mechanical, disuse of a motorcycle battery is even worse for it than regular use. Up in the snow belt, winter-long disuse of motorcycles enforces disuse of the motorcycle’s battery. If the battery gets no charge during extended periods, its level of charge decreases and that can cause a problem called sulfation.
Sulfation happens during long periods of battery inactivity when the charge level declines. It can also occur when the bike’s charging system fails to produce the necessary voltage to maintain a full charge. Sulfation occurs when lead sulfate crystals that occur in small amounts during normal operation convert to crystalline deposits on the negative plates in the battery.
Large crystals eventually develop, reducing the battery’s active material and as a result, its capacity. Left to progress long enough, it can destroy a battery making it incapable of taking a charge and unable to deliver any energy.
The way to prevent sulfation is to maintain the best motorcycle battery at full charge, but when the bike is not being ridden, the charging system doesn’t do it. In some cases, it may not do the trick even if the bike is started and run—if not ridden—during the months of down-time. Some would argue that just getting the bike started in cold conditions is rough on the battery, you won’t know if full charge has been reached (unless you break out the multimeter) and in the case of a bike that is difficult to start or fails to start at all, the drain on the battery could be substantial and not made up by idling the engine.
Fortunately, there is a solution that takes the guess-work out of maintaining the bike’s battery, even over long periods of inactivity: a battery maintainer.
A battery maintainer (a motorcycle Battery Tender is a specific brand of this type of charger) is a charger that has the ability to prevent over-charging when the battery is at the required state of charge and automatically charge when it drops below that level. A maintenance or “float” charge need only be a couple of tenths of a volt above the voltage of the fully charged battery in a resting state—that is, not being otherwise discharged or charged.
The microprocessor-controlled type of maintainer varies from the typical “trickle” charger in that it will not allow the output voltage of the charger to rise to an unacceptably high level, which could be higher than 1volts DC depending on the type of charger and the battery. That condition can damage the battery and ultimately shorten service life.
There also may be temperature compensation built in that addresses the different rate of charge and internal losses in a battery depending on ambient temperature. These are also generally reverse polarity protected, which is good if you’re like me and occasionally lose the ability to tell red (+) from black (-).
Putting this technology to work is relatively easy; battery maintainers may come with simple alligator clips similar to those on those jumper cables you probably forget to carry along in your car in the winter and they also usually include a ring terminal harness with in-line fuse pig-tail that can be connected to your bike’s battery.
The alligator clips work well enough, but will usually require the battery to remain exposed while they are in use. They also have the unsettling potential to come unclipped if not applied properly or if the wiring is bumped or disturbed, with the potential to short out and create sparks in an area where flammable materials and fuel are present. Those factors make the pigtail wiring a good option.
The equipment—screwdriver or box/open end wrench (mm, typical), dielectric grease, pigtail connection harness and the maintainer. Always install and use this type of equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s recommendations, including those related to the type of battery you are charging.
